Impulse! Mastering

I have a quite a few 70's Impulse! LP's now... most seem to be mastered low, flat and lifeless. There's only one that really makes any impact - Michael White's Pnuema.

Anyone else found this?

Yeh, Most of the stuff i have on Impulse! is Coltrane. It is definatly some of the most 2-dimensional mixing I've heard; with Coltrane's horn smashed way over in the left side, the drums all the way to the right, and the bass and piano recessed and low in the mix. Each instrument sounding clear and focussed, but flat as a photograph.
