View Full Version : Allman Bros w/Ratdog $10 DTE 8/27
Andyman 08-16-2008, 02:18 PM More vouchers for DTE at Street Corner today.
I picked up some of these and even went so far as to upgrade to a $29.50 pavilion seat for my ancient arse.
Should be a good show as Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes have really breathed life back into the band and Gregg is in great shape. Plus it looks like there's some mixing up of the bands as well with palyers sitting in on eacjh others sets.
If you like jam band music, this will be some good stuff.
jmathers 08-16-2008, 03:51 PM Swwwweeet Melissa!!

So, don't tell Rob about the copy of "Solomon's Seal" by The Pentangle I scored there today....

"Ancient Arse"...........Thats funny!:lmao::lmao::lmao:
Saw them last year, well worth the price of admission. Blistering loooooooong guitar solos. I had heard a while back that the Allman Brothers had cancelled some shows so Greg could get some treatment for hepatitis iirc. Good to see he is doing good enough to tour again.:thmbsp:
Andyman 08-17-2008, 12:52 AM Yeah, I've seen the Derek and Warren version twice already and have the DVD from The Beacon a few years back; really good stuff. The Allmans are probably the band I've seen the most behind the Dead as this will be fifth or sixth show, not counting the Dickey Betts Band shows.
Rumor has it that next years 40th Anniversary tour will be the last, which really doesn't surprise me as this band really just gets together to do the summer tours. Most of the members are tied up in other projects, especially Warren and Derek, and 40 years on the road has got to be tough. But then again, what else would a musician do?
Andyman 08-19-2008, 06:17 PM Got my ticket confirmation today. Left center row X, which seems to be front half and probably a pretty good seat.
If you're thinking of going, it looks like good seats can still be had; I'm pretty pleased with what it looks like I got.
Should be quite a good time :D
Andyman 08-28-2008, 12:40 AM Wow, this was the most fun I've had at a show in a long time. I paid for a pavilion seat , but spent most of the night on my feet :D
Ratdog was pretty good; they're as close as you're going to get to the Grateful Dead these days. Bob's playing more of the Jerry stuff and even starting to look like him (no ponytail and shaggy gray hair). Played some Dylan, an acoustic "Dark Hollow" and a very nice "Goin' Down the Road" followed with "Ripple" as an encore. If the show ended right then and there I would have been happy.
So out out comes the ABB and they fire off with "Hot "Lanta" and then hit it back with "Statesboro Blues". Man, the guys were cooking, and when guys this good get cooking, look out. I've seen the Allmans at least half a dozen times, and this version at least twice before, and this time they were digging back in the bag playing practically all stuff from "Eat a Peach" or before, plus covers of "I Ain't Superstitious", and Dylans "It takes a Lot to Laugh, It takes a Train to Cry"
Good stuff and money well spent. If this type of powerful, virtuoso blues rock jam band music floats your boat; go see these guys; you won't be sorry. It wasn't "Fillmore East" but it was as close as I've ever been..
ScramMan2 08-28-2008, 08:46 AM Sounds like it was a good show. MHO, Phil & Friends jam much more than Ratdog.
Andyman 08-28-2008, 10:07 AM Yep, but Ratdog seems to be trying hard to be the Dead; the guitar player sure sounds like he's trying to be Jerry.
That "Going Down the Road" really made my day though, as I haven't heard a Dead Style version since the 1980s, maybe that 7/11/81 Alpine Valley show :D
Jack Lord 08-28-2008, 11:06 AM Glad you liked it. I usually see the ABB once or twice a year and they never fail to please. I have also seen Ratdog a few times and they do a pretty good job with the GD songbook.
I am seeing the ABB next month but Phil Lesh is opening.
Andyman 08-28-2008, 12:02 PM Have fun!
I bought the live 2CD set of the show for $25 after they came out smokin' on "Hot "Lanta", Statesboro Blues" and "Ain't Wastin' Time no More", but found out that they have FLAC downloads of all the shows available for $14.95, plus a slight FLAC fee online at ABBLive.com.
A quick listen last night was pretty solid on the computer; I'm going to play the 1st CD out on the Altecs in a sec. After 3 cuts, the CD sounds great; no problem recommending this as the mix is certainly clearer than what I heard, especially Derek's guitar, which sometimes was a bit quiet in the PA mix.
BTW, LOTS of slide guitar; Derek likes a glass, and Warren uses metal :D
If you like the show, it's sure beats a T-shirt :D
Jack Lord 08-28-2008, 01:23 PM I probably do not need to tell you this, but check out Gov't Mule.

You know, I've only heard one of their CDs and found it a but dark. I really need to dig deeper there.
Last night though Warren sang a blues song accompanied by Derek on solo slide guitar that probably was "Muleish". Derek's playing was awesome!
Drybasement 08-28-2008, 01:50 PM Glad you enjoyed that show Andy and by all means, check out more Mule. Say, Derek Trucks Band will be at the Detroit Jazz Festival Monday, September 1st. I do believe David and I will be in attendance but I need to call him tonight or tomorrow to confirm our plans.
Cheers

Saw that on the schedule. Warren will come out with Phil and do Patchwork Quilt.
Wait until you hear Jackie Greene and Larry Campell with their dueling guitars.

Yep, David mentioned that Saturday. I'm off so maybe I'll head down too.
Who else is scheduled Monday and when??
Never Mind...

That's Mark Karan (sp?) on guitar. Bobbie keeps him on a short leash. Good guitar player though.

Nah man, no way! They are today's answer to Cream. Classic power blues-rock appropriate for those who like long hair and muscle cars.
