I think Onepixel is a friendly guy. Having a list of approved friends implies some kind of "elitist clique" where only these certain people are good enough to be called friends. And if someone who's on the bubble makes a friend request you have the pressure of deciding if you accept it and become associated with someone who may turn out to be a schmuck or decline and risk alienating someone who may be a great person. In the grand scheme of things we're all pretty much friends here at AK.

If I'm close at all then I can see where he's coming from and I agree.

Of course Onepixel might just be going axe-murderer and he's distancing himself getting ready to start picking victims.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe AK's site structure uses a template from the product vBulletin® Version 3.7.1. AK and lots of other forum sites have the same basic operational tools & features. The AK mods didn't make up the "social groups" in the CP, it's part of the vBulletin product. It probably serves some sites better than others.

Way back when, before the time of "social networking" in vBulletin, "Friends" was simply your contact list. With so many people here, I made pretty extensive use of the contacts list - adding folks who had been particularly helpful, or had specific knowledge they shared, or sent me parts (or needed parts I had) for a project... having to clean out the PM box now and again, it was helpful to have those names handy.

When we went "social", all those folks became "friends" instead of contacts, but for me the application is still the same.
