View Full Version : Technics SL-D5 Mem-O-Gram issue

Hi all - I have a friend with an SL-D5 just like mine, only there is an issue with the mem-o-gram slider control. On mine, the slider slides down one number to zero as it plays each stacked record - I'm pretty sure this is how it is supposed to work, as it then shuts off after the last record plays.

My friends SL-D5 slider does not slide down one number as each record drops and is played, and then plays the last record repeatedly until it is shut off manually. This happens whether it is set at any number (1-6). It is not set to "R"(continuous repeat).

Could this be a mechanical issue, or a contact issue with the slider - and if so, would fader lube possibly solve it?

Any comments/help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Rob

I have no idea, but what is that silver thing in your avatar? A record weight? Where did you get it?

That is a spindle for single play. Technics multi-play Turntables that could stack records would come with 2 or 3 spindles. A single play and large multi play spindle and in some turntables a 45 multi play spindle.

Yes - it's my single play 'cup' for my changers. Normally, the multi-play spindles are the ones that are hard to come by, but I am looking for a couple more of these - go figure.

It's also the little silver hub of which my hi-fi universe revolves around - I'm a vinyl nut.

Most likely it's a mechanical issue. The slider is not making electrical contact, but rather moving something mechanical--or being moved by mechanics depending on the situation.

Thanks Howard - after thinking more about it - what you say makes perfect sense. It may be time to open up the base and see what's (not) happening.

I just posted a question about this same issue in the "DIY" Forum area.

It makes sense what Howard said about it being a mechanical issue, but does anyone have any idea what the Memo-gram slider hooks up to that causes it to slide down from 6-5-4-3-2-1-0?

My slider seems a little stiff but moves manually, but not automatically after dropping the record. In order to stop it from continually repeating the last record, I too have to move the slider to "0".

Any ideas? Thank you!

I wonder if it is somehow connected mechanically to the cuing mechanism. On my SL-1950, the mem-o-gram is a round knob located right next to the cueing lever.

On my SL-D5, SL-D500, and MCS 6701, it is that slider control on the outside of the dust cover. Maybe over time, some 'gunk' has found it's way in the slider control - there is a nice rectangular opening for dust and such to get in there. Maybe it could use a cleaning - maybe some WD-40??

Also, on all my changers, the moment it slides down one number isn't when the next record drops, it's at the same time the cueing mechanism starts to lower the stylus. That's why I think it may be connected somehow to the cueing mechanism.

That may be stretch, but if my friend decides to open up the base, I hope to look around in there and see just how it works.

Thank you, Rob. I believe you are on to something. Fred Longworth just replied to me in the "DIY" section with similar advice.
