Just talking with my wife about something we were watching on the tele and had a flash. On the original Star Trek on numerous episodes a crew member plugs into the computer a memory device for recording or playback of files. Had not thought about it before but, in any episode was there any description of the memory device or is is possible long before the development of the flash drive or the various memory cards that we now have Gene Roddenberry forecasted the device. Possibly this is the first realization of a technology or device forecasted in the series.

The little square plastic cards - like a 3 1/2 floppy.

I'll volunteer for the first transporter trial..................

I do not remember seeing anything like a floppy in terms of spindle access such as a floppy has.

I'd rather volunteer for the 1st successful transporter trial, personally.

Ehh...not me.

I remember the transporter malfunction scenes in one of the Star Trek movies...

Anyone who transferred on board the Enterprise had a small plastic disc that had all of their personal data on it........

Maybe not spindle drive, but close.

How about the courtroom that had the hand scanner................

Also, could you program the transporter to dematerialize a warped record and then have it rematerialize flat. Wonder as the warping is a stress distortion of the molecules. If so, I wonder if LIRPA will ever make a home version of a transporter for records (and maybe undesirable inlaws)?

Shown at the top left in this pic, with the yellow one installed in the 'reader.'

There was certainly computer data storage on tape in the 60s, and of course the cards...but there were so many science fiction writers making up stuff, I don't know if Roddenberry actually conceived of this all by himself or not.

Those are the puppies. No hole in the middle as a floppy has and a beveled edge. Plug in sort of something between a usb and flash card.

Not a tape drive.I've searched but can not find references to it but seem to remember it referred to as a data disk. It was an interesting search, especially to read the Harry Potter/Enterprise connection. No, not smoking brown things.

ST was so full of firsts I gave up trying to keep track of them all.

You'd definitely enjoy watching this -
