Nudies of my corner University cabinet:

She looks beautiful for an older sweetheart! 50 years old; kinda hard to believe. Turn the lights down low, put on some sexy numbers, and she'll sing sweet nothings in my ear all night.

I matched her up with her big brother and boy, do they rock the house!

When I looked over the crossover, it was inspected by Klipsch and Associates, and is called and Ortho Drive:

It has two large inductors, two different sized transformers, and a terminal strip, but no capacitors or resistors. What gives? I have never seen a crossover missing these components. The system sounds just fine.

Perhaps the caps are inside of those horn driver covers.

I'll bet those things rock! Probably better sounding and just as loud as some of the PA systems I ran in the late 70's.

It looks like there are some "bathtub" caps behind the coil in the second picture. They are square or rectangle tins with 2 or more terminals on one side. They might be stacked or even multi-section units.

These babies SHAKE better than a hootchie mamma! I was home alone for awhile and cranked Satriani, Surfing with the Alien. I wonder how far down the block my neighbors could hear "Satch Boogie"? The attack from the percussion tracks is powerful; I can hear/feel the snap of the drumheads when they are struck. The horns provide excellent detail, separating the voices and instruments very well.

Also, I now know what 25 hz sounds like. I was playing "Soul Sista" off of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. There is a 25 hz synthesizer note that runs underneath the powerful bassline on this track. I knew it was there because I could hear hints of it on my Bozak B-302a system, but the rolloff wouldn't let me really hear it. On the Universities, it was definitely there, very little rolloff, with my graphic EQ out of the circuit. Using the EQ, I was able to pump it way up, just for fun!

OK, so I recognize a transformer, above the Ortho Drive sticker, and the other is probably a bathtub cap, above the Klipsch inspection sticker. I am not familiar with these capacitors and I still thought that resistors would be in the circuit somewhere. In general, don't resistors increase the slope of the rolloff curve? Maybe that is too simplified to be accurate. I gotta brush up on my theory - I have several crossovers to deal with this winter. Thanks for the information!

Well, it was either that for a title, or

"Free Beer Inside"

to get you guys to look.

As it turns out, the nudie thing is pretty effective :butt1::naughty::wave::butt2:

Yep, those are the bathtub caps. I think they are a paper in oil type. That transformer is likely an inductor. I'm not an expert on crossover design by any means, but from what I understand, the electrical slope is determined primarily by the RC or LC topology. A simple series cap is a 1st order (6db/octave) highpass. Add an inductor of the right value to ground after the cap and you have 2nd order, 12 db/octave. The resistance and acoustic response of the driver figures into things....the measurement and theory then go beyond my grasp. Part science, part art. I'm sure some of the fine folks here at AK could be classified as Gurus in that arena.

Rock on with those babies!

I don't get nearly as much alone time these days! I have been wanting to crank up some resurrected JBL L112's, but with the kids home during summer break, even coming home for lunch isn't working out. They go back on Wednesday though!!

Tensleep, what you really have is a Klipsch licensed Shorthorn, made with the University C15W 15" woofer, the University midrange, the Electrovoice T35 tweeter, all tucked in a Brooklyn NY Cabinart cabinet. They rock pretty good!

Hi Ten,

Nice collection of "Oldies" you have there! I very much enjoy these vintage Speakers and have several myself. In fact, I too own a (circa 1955)
CABINART K-3 "The Rebel" Corner Horn Speaker which houses a single 15"
STROMBERG CARLSON SERIES 400 Coaxial. Now all you need to do is hook up a MONO Tube Amp and you'll really be cooking! Enjoy.

Under the large gold cover on the university speaker you may find additional xover components specific to the full-range (assume that is a coaxial?).

Thanks for all the information! I love to know about these old cabinets - that is probably my favorite part of this hobby (other than listening to music). Maybe you guys can help me identify this cabinet, too? It came with the Shorthorn as well. I have identified the drivers, but would like to know the name of this configuration and the cabinet builder, if possible. Here is the link:

Yeah, I was wondering about that, but after reading some old University literature at HiFiLit, the C15W is a true woofer, so the resistors are still a mystery.
