I found some tower speakers about 50" tall by 10" by 12" Multiple mids and a tweeter.....they say PERIOD on the panel where the wires attach....they are white with black cloth front which when removed is wider on one edge than the other. I had limited access to inspect them and no camera with me at the time. If anyone recognizes the description please tell me. I have searched and found nothing but someone else asking about PERIOD speakers. I will get a chance to look at them again the 29 th and will take pictures (or buy) depending on the response here.
Thanks Much!!!

sorry didn't have access to lift them, but when I removed the speaker grill they did not try to tip.

I should say the speaker grill cloth parts were held on with plugs and if I remember correctly there were 4 8" speakers with a tweeter below the first? I will be in the town where the are again the 29th I perhaps should have waited to try to figure this out, but I might make a special trip if worthwhile.
Thanks

Ok,
I was typing when you were...........
All 8" drivers the same?
Stereojunky

all seemed the same......again I didn't have good access to them, stuff piled around and in front.....All drivers appeared the same, but I supose some could be passive? They are designed to sit on the floor and are right and left specific because of the grill design. One tweeter (dome I think..but again only poor view) I believe four (4) drivers.
thanks..

4 ohm loads can be hard to drive. What are you thinking of using as an amplifier?
Stereojunky

I had not considered what I would drive them with. I was simply considering their quality and whether I wished to own them to play with at $50 or so.
I have a Sansui G-4700, but it is rated for 8 ohm speakers.
thanks

When I first read the post title "Period speakers", I thought you were speaking of the 50's period, or the 60's period. Didn't realize you meant the manufacturer Period.
Nope, never heard of them. Someone will chime in.

Orion Blue Book Sez:
Period 96013 Vented
2-8" woofers,2-4" Midrange,5/8" Tweeter,Opt finish
Years Made:1993
Price:$350
They had one model that had a price per pair, but this didnt,so they are probably $350 each.I cant imagine they would sound too bad at that price. They look pretty nice.

I should have made myself more clear in the original post. Even with the photos I posted later i have had no one "chime in" with any help, just more questions.
I'm beat. I don't know who to ask if there is no one here who knows what these are.
Perhaps I should start a new thread and title it differently?
thanks

Whoopee! help at last.
thanks It gives me more to work from!

My 1992 Audio Annual Equipment Directory has them listed, and an address for the company in Lamar MO. They made three models, this one being the top one, the others being a 6.5" AC two way and a 2x6.5 vented two way, both with the same 5/8" tweeter this one has. Most of the specs for this one are on the back, but crossover frequencies are 500 and 4000 Hz. That $350 is for each one, by the way.

If they're in the Orion book, at least you know they're not white van speakers.

I can understand your frustration, but what you might want to consider is that these are all very relevant questions that will help identify the value of speakers, especially offbrand items such as yours. You are receiving a first rate tutorial in used speaker shopping - for free!

This is great information, but ,,a taste makes me hungry for more...Is Period an actual manufacturer, a packager of someone elses product, or a component assembler.....building their own cabinets with someone else's drivers and tweeters?
Is there an actual street address? Or even somewhere I could look at the Directory referenced here?
I am convinced I should go buy them.....Then do some testing
thanks for all the help folks. When I get them I will disasemble (very carefully) them enough to really see what I have. Any more tidbits of information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Very often there is no information available about small companies since often they didn't last long, had limited distribution and didn't advertise much, so you can't even look up old ads. Usually smaller companies used off the shelf drivers, which may be a good thing since it makes it more likely that replacement parts can be found. I'll be curious what you think of them.

You mentioned they are only wanting $50 for them? Skip steak this weekend and pick them up instead, if only just to give them a try. More than $50 might warrant extensive investigation.

Soon as I buy them I will send in the testing data. I have to recommend Fuzzmeasure and the guys at Supermegaultragroovey for the testing software. I am trying it out and will buy.....when I can (married 2 kids......you know the story) http://www.supermegaultragroovy.com
I use TapeDeck they developed and had some problems and they were great to deal with!!!!
thanks for the help. I should be able to get out of town and pick up the speakers this week.

Got the Period speakers home tonight!!!! They weigh in at 65 lbs each!! Here is a screen shot of the testing data.
They are very smooth in the midrange. The highs are bright without being harsh. the lows are a little weak for my taste, but I sent along the specs on the homebuilt speakers I listen to every day. (I built the cases, the crossovers, wound my own choke coils to the specs I wanted and matched all of it together by studying Theils principals of speaker building.) The Periods would make good studio speakers for their very smooth response. Still don't know what I will do with them. My 11 year old says they can go in his room!
Thanks again for the help All of you that searched for data for me.
