I have been thinking about how changing drivers in my Maximus speakers would improve their performance. These are 60s vintage speakers and have paper tweeters and mids. If I upgrade them, I would like to use high effeciency drivers, as these are connected to my Fisher 500B (fairly low wattage.). I think ribon tweeters would be a good choice, but they are very expensive. What drivers would you use and why?

The Morel MDT 30 tweeter is an outstanding tweeter. Very crisp sounding, excellent with the vocal range, has pretty low fs point. Not necessarily affoardable though!

However Vifa and Dayton, HiVi offer some very good priced offerings- link through our sponsor "Parts Express" for a look-see.

I'll give a "thumbs up" for HI-VI as another company making good, inexpensive tweeters.

The MDT-30 seems to offer pretty poor performance for the dollar - for that sort of money, I'd buy Peerless, Vifa, Seas, Hi-Vi, or Bohlender-Graebner.

If you want an efficient mid, the Eminence Alpha 6A is hard to beat. Although a bit large for a mid at 6", it can be used below 200hz and produces 93db at one watt - all for $40. If you'd like to save a few bucks, the Dayton PA130 offers much of the same for $17, though I'd wager the Eminence sounds better.
