Clearly most members, and visitors are into vintage audio. Are you interested in other vintage stuff too? I know of someone who collects vintage audio, and he won't drive a car unless it's at least 20 years old!

Yeah, it would have to be cars for me...I have three vintage cars now:

1961 Nash Metroplolitan
1964 Mercury Comet Caliente
1970 Ford Bronco

I had five at one time, but the wife just didn't understand

lets see vintage audio would be the main thing.
i also have a 1968 ford galaxie so that'll cover the car part.
although im not into it that much anymore i also collect old tube type communication receivers(boatanchors for you hams out there)though the audio gear now outnumbers the shortwave receivers it was the tubed shortwave receivers that got me into the vintage audio aspect of collecting. its also hard sometimes to divide time between the 2 but its fun nonetheless and i wouldnt trade these hobbies for anything.

I don't have the time, room or money to spend on cars, although I love looking at and reading about them. However, I will always grab an interesting old camera, fountain pen, the occasional osc. fan or telephone if they are in pristine shape. Don't have alot of any one of these, but just enough to make my surroundings "interesting". ;)

Vintage cookbooks, being a professional Chef, what else!!!!
I have on from Scotland that requires that you save the cream from the first milking in the morning, and to keep in a cool corner near the fire place. Cool stuff. Another from the late 1800's from the midwest. Written by the daughter of a woman who traveled west in a covered wagon. A couple from France in the early 1900's

I have a large collection of watches. Most of them vintage. I also have a 1976 Moto Guzzi 1000 Convert motorcycle. It will stay parked this year because of other priorities but I always consider myself an motorcycle enthusiast.

Great scooter, the Moto Guzzi. I remember when the Calif Hwy Patrol bought Moto Guzzi's, different jug config than the Harleys, almost got a ticket from a CHPer on a Guzzi, told him it wasn't fair that they didn't tell the public to watch their rearviews for jugs sticking out the side on an angle. He laughed, said he prefered the Harley, and let me go.

My Guzzi is the civilian model of that CHP one. Quite ugly but a dream to ride. 2-speed gearbox and a torque converter, so you never shift it. With 1000cc and a slushbox it's an ideal commuter. The right brake pedal controls one rear disk and one front disk, so you can ride it with a leg in a cast more or less safely, although the general distraction of a biker ALREADY in plaster is likely to cause accidents. I've owned a number of bikes, fast and slow. I'd trade this for another 4 speed 750 Bonnie, but not much else.

Hey Bauhausler,
I've got a very nice '72 Eldorado that just loves profiling and embarrasing Harleys (sounds much better). Old, but a super ride. I don't know about the 4sp Triumph, I had a new one and could'nt keep it from shaking itself apart. However, when it decided to do some roadwork, nothing could touch it.

I love the occassional old Hudson or Indian, any steam locomotive or gas (turtleback) engine, the B-52 and P-51, even a classic Omega or Rolex. But they're all out of my price range, so I started collecting antique tube radios from the '30s-'50s.

Knives
Books
Furniture (I don't want most of the new umm "stuff")

Computers (yep, vintage computing iron!)

I have funny collecting habits though- I usually only want to own something for a while, then I feel I need to let someone else enjoy it. So I sell it, swap it, or give it to someone who either would like to own it, or I think would really enjoy it even if they aren't really looking for that item (books especially, though I've setup a lot of old stereos as well).

So I always have the pleasure of saying "yeah, I had such and such, it was really great" but I don't have a problem with actually storing them, except in my memory. There are a few things I do hold onto (just try to get my 66 Mustang!) but I try to keep them to a minimum.

Scads and scads of them at Slashdot...but I've never found a "community" like there is here. Not that I've looked too hard, they get off on platform and hardware wars! I just think some of the old stuff is neat, mostly 70's oddball stuff, course I'd like to get a 50's or 60's *vac machine for reasons I don't completely understand!

Greasy old bikes. Not shiny show bikes, but daily riders with an oil leak or two, that are 30 or more years old. I can only afford one right now. It's a '73 Ironhead Sportster that I chopped the piss out of in my garage. I cut it in half and welded on a hard tail, and raked the front end 37 degrees. Running a spring seat, boat trailer rear fender, homemade side mount license plate and taillight, 10" rise Z bars, homemade air cleaner, and drag pipes. It's bare bones, kick only, no blinkers, horn, gauges, or bags. I painted it flat black and wrote "f**k shiny" on the air cleaner. I have a blast on it, plus it intimidates the hell out of yups.

What do you want from life

What do you want from life

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell

How do you know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving
What do you want from life
Someone to love and somebody you can trust
What do you want from life

Now I wrestle with XML and JavaScript and Perl makes me weep with joy. I write certified XHTML code and let it slowly suck the soul right out of me, 'cause it ain't C.

And then I come home and crack a Yingling and turn up the Husker Du and wonder just what the heck I was thinking of when I thought it would be a good idea to settle down and start aquiring things and slowly sink into the ground.

And I wonder where all the colors went - shadows hold more interest now, and the sight of a Walmart doesn't hurt me as deeply inside as it once did. Ever notice that ever damned Walmart in the world has the greasiest parking lot you ever did see? Every oil-leaking POS that Detroit ever made is parked there. And the inside of every Walmart I've ever been in smells vaguely like a dirty kid's diaper. I wonder why that is?

Did I stop to listen to a train whistle the other day? Or did I turn up NPR and keep driving?

Bah! More beer and back to work tomorrow.

But on Saturday, I get on a plane for San Francisco - a week at the Palace Hotel downtown. I'm da man.

Oh! Violent Femmes just came on. Diggin' it.

My first vintage love was (and always will be) trains. When I was a kid a friend took me to see an old steam locomotive that was out on Milwaukee's lake shore. Old Smokey #265 was a huge 4-8-4 Northern (Superpower iirc) that the Milwaukee Road donated to Milwaukee. Having visited the North Freedom RR museum by Wisconsin Dells, I knew that there were people crazy enough to restore these beasts and run them for fun. Since then I've always wanted to be part of a locomotive restoration.

Next on the vintage list, vintage arcade games. Want to see me go all schoolgirl giggly with a idiotic grin on my face? Drop my butt in front of my Battlezone, Space Duel or Tutankham (Stern/Konami) and watch for drool. I spent weeks restoring the Space Duel machine that had been converted to another game (Major Havok) and left in a nasty barn for 15 years. Eventually I plan on building another cabinet to house the guts I have for another Atari Vector game - Quantum!

Vintage computers are another addiction from my youth. I lusted after my uncle's Pet-2001 with 8K or RAM. I finally bought one of the first Vic-20s to hit Madison. Learned 6502 machine code by cracking the protection on a C-64 game "Repton".

Here is a weird kitbuilt I just shipped off...

Besides some of the audio gear I own, I still think older cars make todays' look sick. Todays' look like jellybeans. With older cars you can still tell one make from another halfway down the block. Plus, todays' cars need an engineering degree to fix. Old cars are such that you could fix one blindfolded. And I still think Ralph Nader was wrong: if I ever find a decent '65 to '69 Chevy Corvair (ANY body style!) at a good price, I'm dumping my Taurus!

Antique golf clubs. Been building clubs for a few years, now, and getting more into it. Helps finance audio purchases, and, recently, new furnace.

My growing collection of vintage/antique clubs helps me understand how clubmaking has evolved, and how it has recycled old ideas. Just change the materials.

BTW, am I the only one here, or are there any other golfers still in the closet?

Vintage computers. Big time.

Computers have always been my main hobby, I've been collecting (read "accumulating") them for about 10 years now. I've got quite a lot of very interesting machines, including three minicomputers - a Prime 5340, a Data General 9500, and a DEC PDP-11/74. I really love old mainframe/minicomputers and old workstations. I've also got quite a lot of terminals, as well as lots and lots of micros. (TRS-80, Apple II, C64, etc.)

I got into tube stuff a few years ago starting with a small, bakelite General Electric tube clock radio. I've since accumulated a few other tube radios, and I've really gotten into tube television sets. It's amazing how one hobby starts to blend into another. I've always loved music, so vintage audio has kinda always been there, although I didn't really consider it one of my main hobbies until I noticed just how many old recievers and tape decks I had managed to drag home, and how many records I had amassed. It starts out so simple, with one radio, or one old microcomputer, and before long you've got piles of old machines, a stack of receivers, boxes full of tubes, stacks of records and 5 1/4" floppy disks, and enough monitors, terminals and television sets in one room to make you seriously wonder if collecting this much of a vacuum together is really such a good idea.

So, yes. I collect old electronics.

Motorcycles and pens here. I have over 100 vintage fountain pens, which, since I retired from teaching, I don't get to use as much as I'd like. I choose a different one each time I pay the bills, though.
I currently have 4 vintage motorcycles, if you count the '87 Honda Rebel 450. The others are a '66 Honda CL160 Scrambler which I've had since new, a beautiful red '75 Honda CB400F SuperSport, and a blue and chrome 1970 BSA Royal Star 500. Nice choices. I still have a '72 Triumph T100R Daytona, '72 BMW R75/5, '73 Honda CB350F and '81 Kawasaki KZ550. Sold off the other 15 vintage MCs over the past four years since we moved from our spacious digs in TX to our less spacious digs near the coast. I had a 3000sf barn and lots of warm weather in TX. Nothing like that up here. One that killed me the most to sell was the '79 Honda CBX. No, make that the hopped-up '97 Hawk. Or the.......like parting with children. Oh, well. Guess its got to be vintage stereo, which certainly ain't bad.

Besides vintage stereo equipment I like older rifles in wildcat calibers. Although most have become main stream calibers over the years. A lot of similarities between guns & equipment. You get what you pay for but you can find a buy every once in a while. The people who collect/shoot the guns are usually good folks and opinionated (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Most are willing and patient when listening to someone who's just getting started. There are gun snobs as there are Hi-Fi snobs but they are in the minority as they are in Hi-Fi. The big advantage to equipment is I can use it inside without too many problems :D

2.Tvs: but not collecting them to keep but to fix and sell(been doing this longer than collecting records)Don't ask about vintage sets. They are all promised to a certain member on here already and I'm keeping just one for myself.
3.old phographs and record players(tube type)which came about from record collecting.
4.jukeboxes:started with a modern box I found at auction a Rockola 490-1 over 10 years ago.Then a few years ago the 50's boxes:Wurlitzer 2150,Seeburg C and Seeburg R.

i've got a '78 ducati darmah, and a '72 de tomaso pantera, neither of which get much use these days, due to personal family issues. :worried: oh well... hopefully i will some day get my personal life sorted out. one or both of these toys may have to go away, but i am trying to figure out how to hold on to them.

meanwhile my daily driver is an '88 alfa milano verde sedan (w/another milano gold as back-up), soon to be replaced w/a gtv6 as soon as all the hi-po goodies are removed from my rusty '86 into my '85 w/the perfect rust-free body. when this happens, the remaining gtv6 & one of the milanos goes up f/s...

Classical music and some crossover artists - why else would we need high quality reproduction.

Miniatures (dollhouses) one done but we need to finish a room across the front of the basement so that we can finish the two kits we have that are waiting. This one took eight months to put together, but I was working then and only got to it on weekends.

"Miniaturists work as little as possible"

Forgot to mention refinishing antiques, the house is full of them. Dining room has six Pennsylvania baloon back chairs and a gateleg table. The wooden hinges had perished and someone put strap hinges across the gap. So far I have made one hinge in Ash and am working on the second one as time permits.

Someone mentionned computers - have built them and programmed them in Assembler, COBOL, Fortran, PL/1 and Basic. Now they are simply a tool that I use for other applications.

Finally, as the family historian I am quietly obsessed with genealogy and so far have found several cousins in Britain, Australia and North America. Every Blackshaw in Canada is either direct family or a cousin at some remove and I am willing to bet that here in the U.S., every one west of the Mississippi is also related.

Vintage hobby-est computers, from the mid-70s (of course). My center-pieces are my Imsai 8080 (S100 Bus, seen in the movie, "War Games") and my DEC PDP-1103 (Q-Bus), both with all the trimmings, and fully functional.

I hope not, I voted "Other. I counted them sometime last year and I had over 140, a few more may have slipped in. Oldest is from 1928, I really don't like the style before that. Mostly '40s and '50s table radios.

The problem is space, of course. And my wife talking about getting a smaller house. Aiyeeeeee!

I voted for cars, but there is also a lot that would go into the other category.
As for cars I have a 72 Impala 4dr with a 400 small block V8, a 65 Chevy truck with a 327 (300 hp) that came out of a 68 Impala, and a 69 Corvette convertible (454, 4spd) - none of which are currently operational.
I mainly frequent this site because of my interest in vintage televisions (of which I have about 30). But I do have a collection of old tube radios.
I also keep old lamps, light switches, 78 rpm records, 3spd bicycles, an ice box, a few clocks, fans, some furniture, books, I would collect old stoves if I had the room, adding machines, mechanical typewriters, 8-track players, I've been considering getting into early VCRs and Beta machines, I keep rotary telephones, I even have a 40s toaster....
Old TV related items such as old "rabbit ears" and uhf converters, test equipment, tubes, crt's.
Old car parts and tools.
And now for something really, really vintage: I study Sumerian texts.
Basically most old junk, especially if its electrical or mechanical.

I like nice quality men's wrist watches (Omega, LeCoultre, asymetric Hamilton, chronographs, chronometers and moon faces) and fountain pens (Parker, Wahl, Conklin, Chilton, LeBoeuf, Waterman's, ets.). I currently have several thousand vintage fountain pens. As far as automobiles, and muscle cars in particular, I have in the past owned some nice Pontiac GTO's.

Oh, my! Where do I start?

This thread started me thinking, and although I'm not world-class like some of you (Chad are you the alpha-collector?), I'm apparently a pretty prodigious packrat. I've never inventoried my collection of "treasures and drek" before. Maybe this is a good time to start.

- I collect mostly early telvision (still under a hundred, but growing!)
- Also old radio (maybe 150, who knows?)

But also a little bit of apparently everything. I never met an "accumulatible" I didn't like. They seem to just follow me home to my home for wayward, orphan electronics.

- I've limited myself to ONE old jukebox (AMI Model C)
- And ONE old car (1961 Triumph TR3)

- one "monitor top" refrigerator (What was I thinking? I don't know, it followed me home...)
- Two pinball machines (down from a peak of 7)
- A growing collection of 60s-vintage 1/2" open reel video equipment
- Antique microphones (about a dozen, including a mint RCA 77 DX)
- Old audio (Ampex 350 studio deck, plus maybe a dozen other lesser machines), wire recorders, magnetic disc recorders, miniature tape recorders. Also a few laser disc and CED players thrown in for good measure.
- some 8-track and a few pieces of even weirder audio tape stuff.
- Vintage test equipment (to keep the vintage electronics running!)
- Phonographs (Edison cylinder, acoustic and electric 78 RPM, some 70s vintage stereo stuff)
- Records (around 10,000 -- again, who knows? Mostly 78s)
- Old computers (nothing fancy, just some early Osborne and Apple stuff)
- A small collection of vacuum tubes, collectibles as opposed to inventory to keep the equipment running
- A couple of old, and a couple of really old 16 and 35mm movie projectors, plus a small collection of 16mm films.
- Miscellaneous: old fans, old light bulbs, old telephones, view cameras, weird old toasters, a few ancient hand tools handed down through the family,
- Lots of ephemera: books, catalogs, magazines, postcards, etc. related to the above junque. Plus all the family photos dating back to the beginnings of photography.
- My old Gibson ES-225 guitar, from high school
- And, inadvertently, vintage video production equipment. Some of the stuff I bought new has become museum pieces when I wasn't paying attention (makes ME feel old too!): Ikegami HL-83 camera, NewTek Video Toaster and Flyer, 16-line base correctors, U-Matic and MII video decks, etc.

And last but not least:

- A family that tolerates but does not to any degree share my collecting pathology. So when you read my name in the obituaries, just drive past the house, 'cause it's all going to be on the curb!

Was collecting Yamaha B-2 amps for a while. But, they've proved so damned reliable I've sold a couple and am down to three. How about TOTL Sony and Yamaha tuners. Have three Sony and five Yamaha thus far. Probably get a Yamaha TX-1000 in the future. And a few bicycles. All are steel. Almost as light as the exotic stuff and considerably better riding. Music. Especially vinyl. Am jealous of the guys who met in NYC yesterday. Where's their report? And books. But, what a pain now that we are moving. And, my wife. Is the one thing that I will never let go of. I am a very, very lucky person.

Like B-2, aside from Yamahas, it's books--pretty specialized...British and US first editions by a couple of authors, but really many different authors. One author and book always leads to another...Henry Williamson...Richard Jefferies...F. Scott Fitzgerald...Hemingway...and on and on...so many books, so little time...currently reading W. H. Hudson's "Long Ago and Far Away".

I love most older things. Old books, furniture, of course audio gear, you name it. It is not that I do not like the newer items, it is that I like getting ahold of the things that I used to covet in the leaner times, and also I like the historical aspects of the items. It is like a ride in a time machine, especially with books. There is additionally something special about perserving and enjoying something that was made years ago that adds to the satisfaction.

I'm into vintage cookbooks as well. I'm the grillmaster, and I've found some pretty interesting recipes in books published in the fifties.

Besides electronics for excellent audio reproduction, I also collect radios that are good for long distance reception. Shortwave and AM mostly, but I do have one or two that I bought for their alleged FM performance.

All of my pix are taken on 35 mm cameras with actual film, so I have a small collection of vintage 35 mm gear. My camera "collection" mainly comprises fairly simple 620 or 120 film cameras- brownies, bakelite boxes of different kinds, a couple of portables with bellows (the agfa isolette is one of my favorites), I dabble in twin lens reflex camera too though don't own any right now. I used to have a Rolleiflex that took pictures of jaw-dropping beauty. Resale value was just too tempting.

I collect a few odds and ends in the vintage category, like viewmaster reels. I started collecting old product literature until i received the second item in a row that smelled bad- a mix of old paper and mildew. Then I stopped!

Both gone now, of course.

I used them to date and price my old radio collection but they have taken on somewhat of a life of their own as collectibles for me now.
