Ultra cool. Anyone know the name of that Miles Davis tune or which other albums it might appear on?

Aw man they stole my idea. I've always wanted to quit my advertising job and open a coffee shop. I'd just play my records all day and let cute hipster girls serve the coffee.

How much for a ticket to Japan? I think that is on of the coolest ideas for a quaint type establishment ever!!

Terrible place. I bet they even serve coffee (did I mention I was born and raised in Amsterdam?). :D

Isn't the TT in the bottom pic a Thorens 124? One just sold on ebay for $4,700
I don't think I'd have mine out like that.

Cool video. I'm not sure what I like better, watching people listen to recorded music, or seeing that there is at least one aging Japanese beatnik!

I would love to see a commercial establishment with gear like that.

I would be there everyday!

I wouldn't worry about the Japanese competition too much, considering your location!

Open it, and they will come...

Chicago actually has some, but really very few, interesting coffeeshops for a city of it's size. Plenty of Starbucks, though. A block from here you can sit in a Starbucks and look out the window at another.

We have got the cute hipster girls, though. But I can't say they're as attractive as the New York ones. That's why we're the second city.

Better be a coffee shop as opposed to a bar! Drunks crashing around with reckless abandon.

You've obviously never attended any of the after-hours sessions at AK-Fest - drunken audiophiles are often capable of careening about with deep (but occasionally comical) reverence!

Yes indeed, mistakes were made. But lessons were learned, and a "revelry containment program" was put into place at the last AK-Fest in the Venus Hi-Fi Room. I think it worked very well. :D

Aw man they stole my idea. I've always wanted to quit my advertising job and open a coffee shop. I'd just play my records all day and let cute hipster girls serve the coffee.

I've also long had idle daydreams of opening a coffee-shop place with a "theme" of vintage audio stuff.

There is a place in Hong Kong which made music and audio gear a central part of their decor, but it was modern dj-style stuff and a wall full of cds and a DJ station in the middle of the place, instead of vintage gear. Much too "trendy" for my tastes.

There was also coffee shop for a while which had a lot of old LPs on the walls; mostly Elvis and funky "retro" stuff, but they didn't have the vintage gear or the rest of the ambience to match. Almost more 50s diner done on a budget, and the place didn't last too long.

It wouldn't be hard to create a NICE place with GOOD stuff both functional and decorative, but I'm not sure it would be at all easy to make it pay well. Most people are unlikely to pay a premium for the music and gear ... and the few who would, don't all live close enough together to keep the cash registers ringing. AKers are too spread out geographically! :D

Taiwan is full of funky little coffee shops with individual "themes" and interesting decor like that, but I can't recall any that were specifically focused on vintage audio gear.

Isn't the TT in the bottom pic a Thorens 124? One just sold on ebay for $4,700
I don't think I'd have mine out like that.

Japan has extremely low rates of theft, and most people are generally respectful of other peoples' property, most of the time. In most countries, such a place would probably involve a lot more risk, and be unadvisable, but in Japan, it is thinkable.

Those places sure do look like pleasant places to visit and sip and listen... :music: :thmbsp: Too bad there aren't more places like that... :sigh:

Very cool coffee shop photos and video! The video is actually of the Concorde restaurant, home of the Japanese audio legend Sakuma san. Makes me wish I understood Japanese! Concorde is on my short list of lifetime "must visits". According to the Direct Heating Web site, http://www10.big.or.jp/~dh/ all the systems shown are hand-made mono. Sakuma himself is an original "out-of-the-box" thinker who is absolutely dedicated to his craft. His dedication and focus are humbling! Be sure to check out the Web site. It appears to be a little out of date, compared with the video, but it's still cool stuff nonetheless! :music:
