Wardsweb 05-10-2004, 09:27 AM Reminder - only five more days till the big bash at Josh's place. madpioneer 05-10-2004, 01:43 PM Possible I may be attending this year finally, but from what time to what time? THANX! Wardsweb 05-10-2004, 02:24 PM Jam starts at high noon (12:00) and goes until 6 or 7. Depending on when the beer runs out or Josh kicks us out. :D Wardsweb 05-15-2004, 11:05 PM Great time again. I'll have pictures up tomorrow. Until then a quick one of our host "The Wild Man" himself - Josh. Andyman 05-15-2004, 11:50 PM How'd the 3960 shootout go? Inquiring minds want to know! Wardsweb 05-16-2004, 12:05 AM More later but you could say we covered all the bases and then some. Andyman 05-16-2004, 12:08 AM Holey smokes! A 6 pack to go! Was there a stock version in the house? Let us know later. madpioneer 05-16-2004, 03:02 PM Got the rare opportunity to attend the latest ' Bottlehead Meet'. Experienced alot of what I read about here in the threads. Some great sounding gear along with some great people. The amount of knowledge and DIY skills some of these guys possess is unreal. Some have been building amps, speakers and the like for 20 or 30 years. But you won't find snobbish egoes and attitudes. Many are more than willing to share thier building abilities even with a lamen like myself. Many that you meet you almost feel like you've known them for awhile. The hospitality makes you feel right at home. Those of you who could not make it missed some great sounds, comradery, conversation, and Josh's bad to the bone jambalaya & red beans and rice! Even though I am not a tube guy per say I would not hesitate to attend another meet if at all possible. I urge any other soley solid state guys like myself to try to attend at least one of these type events. A real eye opener to the other side of audio along with a real education into 'Heck I'll Just Build It Myself' . Plus you get to meet some of the great people from AK really talk face to face and share your thoughts on things. It was one the best afternoons I have had in a long time! Thatch_Ear 05-18-2004, 11:34 PM Twas fun indeed! fredt300b 05-19-2004, 07:12 AM Originally posted by Andyman How'd the 3960 shootout go? Inquiring minds want to know! It's hard for me to say because I was the one operating the selector switch on the preamp and couldn't hear the speakers on axis, but I believe it was inconclusive. We never got around to comparing the Swenson and Vinnie mods (too much fermented beverage plus another system playing on the other side of the wall?). We did compare the Swenson-modded 3960's analog output to the digital output fed thru the Scott Nixon tube dac. Tough comparison because the outputs are about 6dB different (SN is louder), so I had to juggle the volume control simultaneously with the selector switch. I believe I recall John saying the Tosh's analog outputs' mid and highs sounded better but the SN had better bass, but they sounded more alike than different. Someone else said the Tosh sounded much better than the SN dac - more revealing - but that listener also preferred the Tosh dac in fast mode rather than slow mode and seemed to have a preference for a highly revealing system over a softer, more forgiving one. Will some of the guys who were listeneing from the couch chime in here? John, Madpioneer, are you out there? madpioneer 05-19-2004, 09:15 AM For me Swenson’s slow mode was more preferred. It had a softer edge to the music than fast mode. Unfortunately I had to leave before the others were brought in to play. It is really hard to explain unless you hear it for yourself. Switched between the two there was a difference however slight there was definitely a difference. I would have liked to hear them all so I could have a broader range of opinion here. Audio_Builder 05-19-2004, 10:13 AM Unfortunately, I was out of town last weekend. I heard the meet went well. So, Pictures! Pictures! I want to see pictures.:D |
