Some time ago I read some comments that the Dual 1019 was an OK turntable for its time (40 years ago!) but that the tonearm was kind of a marginal tracker. That triggered a memory from long ago and I remembered some pictures of a Dual playing a record upside down!. Well, I couldn't figure out a way to kep the record from falling off but sure enough it tracks like a champ and sounds wonderful at really extreme angles - Audio technica AT 450 tracking at 1.5 grams automatic cycle and sounds wonderful (disclaimer don't try this at home etc etc)

I would not use a super-delicate super-high-compliance stylus on such a high-mass arm, but other than that the arm should be able to accommodate a wide range of cartridges.
The weak point in the design of the 1019 is the idler wheel. It must be ROUND AND SUPPLE to do its job. Many original idlers are hard as a rock, leading to speed instability, rumble and stalling during cycling due to weak torque.

That trick was actually in their owners manual...kind of a gimmick, but it does hold true that the 1019 can track almost anything!. I own 5 idlers (2 of which are of the idler lust catagory), and my 1019 is still among my favorite tables. It is the table I use when I test new equipment....it never lets me down.
