I know where there is a Magnavox mono console with a very large speaker (like 30" x 30" x 14" deep) independant of the console. Anybody know what it might be? It was at a garage sale yesterday that is continueing today. Cabinet was blonde and smallish, speaker was huge! I have a giant fish tank (weighs like 250lbs or more)in the back of my truck that I can't remove myself so I passed it up yesterday but may consider a wrestling match with the tank if it's something special. Got busy and never had time to remove the fishtank to go look at console again. Sorry I didn't have a picture of it, I thought it a bit unusual with the giant detached speaker and maybe someone might have and idea what it was. I've done a search and didn't spot anything that looke like it.

The mid-late 50s Magnavox consoles were sold as a mono tuner/phono with an optional remote cabinet. The turntable would have the pickup swapped for a stereo one, and you'd have stereo record playback and mono tuner playback. Normally a second set of controls was added to handle the mono switching. Probably has one of those 6v6 ppp/se bi-amps in it. If you're extremely lucky its a Concert Grand. Either way its a nice piece to own.

I might take a drive by there today and see if he still has it. I got a little suspicious when the seller told me it worked and there were a couple of tubes missing out of it. Someone may have plucked them out when he wasn't , who knows about that? I had spoken to him months ago about a console and he wanted $1200, another reason I didn't ask but who knows, sometimes reality sets in............

Was the speaker itself 30" or the entire cabinet? If the cabinet then I think those are fairly common remote units that were add on when making the move from mono to stereo. If that's what you are looking at then $1200 is nuts. More like $12-$20 for each piece.

Did they look like these? The "master" of this set had a pair of 6V6 mono amps in them, which have since been converted to 175 mono-blocks.

Not intending to hi-jack this thread; however I had a question….

Is there much of a market for these ol’ consoles? I have a neighbor who has offered to give me one of these….

Basically all I have to do is agree to pick it up. It belonged to her ex husband (divorced and he has since past away) and it has been in storage ever since. I believe it is currently in non working condition.

Is it worth the effort ????

Who knows what rare and expensive tubes may be in there, never mind the rest of the electronics (of course they are good too).

Something I ran across on the web lead me to belive that one is solid state. Not absolutely sure though. Might call to check. The old tube units seem to draw more interst than the 60's SS units. Might have some nice speakers in it though.
