Still trying to decide about power tubes for my Scott 222C. All 3 of the 6p14p-ev show grid leakage but appear to be fine. In todays market what are some of the nice values from a performance perspective for (EL84, 7189)? I know many of you do not like the JJ's but I have been lucky so far with JJ EL84's. Thanks

JJ seems to have a good reputation in their EL84 and small signal twin triodes (12A*/ECC* family). They've got a bad rap on some of their octal power tubes (KT77) but others give good reports (KT88).
If you've had good experience with the JJ EL84, I'd say go with them. I've had luck with the Russian equivalents, and my stockpile probably has enough in it to hold me over until I'm deaf or dead. My only regret is that the price of the 6p14p is three times what is was ten years ago. Oh well.

I've had good luck with JJ EL84 tubes.
But I also have had good luck with TAD and NOS 70's/80's Russian Reflextor tubes....cheap too!

I've had good luck with the 'Mullard reissues' and there are numerous threads on these tubes and their variants here, but if your amp calls for 7189's you moy want to check the voltages as the latter are rated for 33% higher plate voltage which may make your investment in 6BQ5's short lived.

Thanks for the replies. I see that I can't just swap the 7189's with EL84's on the Scott 222c. The 6P140-EV's sound ok. I was just concerned that all 4 failed the leakage test on my sencore tester.
I was able to pick up a Mullard Rectifier for my ST70. This has been educational. I guess it is important to stock up on certain NOS tubes especially the 7868 and 7199. I have done well getting nice 12AX7's for a good price.
So as it stands for power tubes I am using JJ in the SC ASR-433 and 444. EHKT90 and EHEL34 Big bottles in the Rogue, RCA in the Sherwood, Sven EL34's in the ST70 and 6p14P in the Scott.

You really need to try some US/Western European outputs in your Stromberg's....
I recently determined that GE 7189A's can be swapped into the 433, and that they sound better than an extremely rare and valuable quad of late 50's Bugle Boys in that amp. Beg, borrow, buy or steal yourself a set and see for yourself....:thmbsp:

I have 3 sets of matched quads for my similar Scott 299A- JJ EL84, Ei EL84 and a quad of 6P14P-ev. The JJ's have been in use pretty much since 2002 and still going strong...nice tubes. The JJ 12AX7's are driving the front end of the amp and doing fine too.

I'll second the vote on the GE 7189As, they sound great in my Fisher 600 too. :thmbsp:
