I'd posted earlier in the thread by M Jarve regarding his Yaquin amp and tubes but I didn't want to appear as though I was hijacking his thread so I thought I post a new thread here.
I'd been waiting this morning for the JJ's to arrive and they have....and I'm loving them. I'm using them in place of the EL34's for my Rogue Cronus.
I admit I haven't used too many others to compare these with but in my experience and for what I'm looking for in sound the JJ's are a hit.
I wish I could say I've heard Mullard's or the SED's or some of the other big hitters but all I've used so far are the JJ EL34's and GT EL34M and the GT34LS.
I liked the original JJ's overall but they did have a thin sound to them and the GT's were just a bit too warm with a "muddled" lower end for my tastes. But these KT77's, Hoochie Mama! They're everything I've read about. They more than fill in the the thin sound of the JJ EL's and absolutely stomp the GT's in clarity.
The best bottom end I've been able to pull from the Rogue, mids and voices are just sweet and spot on, especially voices, and I'm hearing string plucks and high end nuance like never before. Much more dynamic and punchy.
I'm using Yamaha NS1000M's and had always read that they like EL34's but since using them with the Rogue I have to admit I wasn't hearing what all of the fuss was about but with the KT77's they're just now showing me what they're capable of. They sound like different speakers.
I was leery of purchasing the JJ's because of all the horror stories about their reliability but hopefully I have a good pair. Burning them in for about 3 hrs. now with no problem and the bias is staying dead on.
If the JJ's didn't sound good to me I was ready to get some Mullard's, SED's Siemens or Genalex KT77's (I'd still like to hear those) but for now, and for a while to come I'm really happy with the JJ KT77's. Worth a listen if you like your sound full yet detailed. They're not exactly warm but that's my preference. Almost like using a SS amp with a tube pre but just a little bit better.
