Anybody have the part number for the 1/4" NAB hub adapters with aluminum flanges? I can't seem to locate it in the service manual. They should be standard among various machines, but Studer wants the actual part number. Thanks in advance. :music:

Hi,

I don't have the number but will have one of my technicians check the manuals and PM back with an answer.

The one :-P I have for my A-77 is plastic, with a (cracked and hardened) O-ring; no aluminum flange.

Hi,

The plastic ones were standard on A 77 machines, metal could be had at extra cost in the day. The metal ones were standard on A 700 machines, PR 99 machines and Studer machines.

I think that the actual NAB adapter is plastic only. It accepts the aluminum flanges which are a big help when cueing tape back and forth by hand. And as this was done by professional editors, decks with those on gained a distinctive pro look.

I have not been very happy with these NAB adapters. Really difficult to balance and even more difficult to attain balance with every reel. And without balance the whole deck and desk vibrates when tape goes FF/REW.

I have been more than happy with the plastic 10" Revox reels that don't need a NAB adapter. They are perfectly balanced, don't bend, allow for better tape packing and are also easy on the breaks (less mass - less inertia). Therefore more than 80% of my reels are plastic.

I have found the Teac NAB adapters from my X-1000R to be way better. They are of the screw/fasten type and appear to be better balanced than the Revox type. But again they cannot make a bad metal reel balance right.

I think the adapters used by Revox were designed and initially sold under the Basf label. I've seen some references for them as Basf nab adapters.

The metal ones and plastic ones are actually IDENTICAL, the metal bit is screwed on as an extra handle.
My catalogue shows the Art. No as 45010 for aluminium.
Plastic one is Art No. 45001
The price difference is ridiculous, just for a piece of aluminium pipe.

The cost of these adapters are quite high, but I am buying for looks only. IMO they are the best and most professional looking hubs ever made. I had a pair that I sold, and they did work quite well, but required some adjustment on my Tascam deck. The hubs are all I can afford, one day I will buy the whole Studer machine :)
