DirecTV and 5.1 sound

Does anyone know how to ensure that when your DirecTV program sounds is 5.1, your receiver catches the 5.1 feed and puts it out throuhg your speakers in that format?

Interesting question...

I know when ever my 5.1 Harman/Kardon AVR is getting the proper digital bit stream because there is a display on the front showing all speaker locations and what signal is getting to them. It also has a read out saying what audio signal it is getting. What receiver do you have?

I have a Sony Strdb930.....when I get the 5.1 feed from my SONY DVD player, the blue lights go on on both the DVD player and the Receiver.

I've never gotten a blue light when using the DirecTv dish and having the audio feed go through the receiver.
