Hello AK'ers,

I was perusing Amazon's Vinyl Upcoming Releases section and was blown away with what is coming out in the next couple of months...and all of it will be in 180g format.:banana:

Pixies - Bossanova
Pixies - Trompe le Monde

Pretty much all of Slayer's back catalog

Townes Van Zandt!

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Almost all of the Queen albums from the 70s

Almost all of the Kinks from the 70s

Prince - Purple Rain

Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction

And this just scratches the surface. Okay, bad metaphor! LOL

I think I am going to be broke.:banana:

Thanks to the kids getting into vinyl. I think that is really helping us older generations get stuff that was hard to find or way too expensive.

Awesome ain't it!
I've shown the misses and she is 'pissed'. It'll be slow & sneaky for me.
One thing though, I hope the quality is there. I've had to return 3 copies of U2's - Boy remastered 180g with innersleeve booklet as they have all been badly warped. I gave up and just bought it as a new standard re-press. It's still excellent and sounds great but I did want the premium pack.

It is a good thing. I am just glad I have enough turntables to get through the rest of my life. I would hate to have to buy a decent used table in the next couple of years.

Let's give credit to the companies that have not recently jumped on the vinyl bandwagon AND have been long time AK supporters, with music giveaways to members. Not to mention selection & price.

I just hope the sound quailty is there like back in the day:music: The pressing makes all the differance in the world. I was listening to Iron Butterfly
In da Gadda da Vida on CD and it was not good at all:no: The stereo seperation was missing and the openess of the solo's sound as if the were being played in a tin can!!! Going out to find the LP asap:yes: Found a mint copy of Stanley Clarke "Rock, pebbles & sand" On vinyl and haven't stopped listening to it yet!!

Ah well, what else was I going to do with my hobby money anyway...

Also concerned with quality -- I suspect those issues will get rarer soon... these companies don't make as much money with loads of returns. And as the 'kids' get educated about good vs bad vinyl/pressings they'll demand better. It is almost like these companies are having to relearn how to press records all over again...

Yeah, if I had money to buy new albums I'd be broke too!

I can remember when CD's were first hitting the market. I was stationed in Germany. Seems like the music/electronics industry always tested new issues out on the military!!

I initally refused to buy a CD Player. I do admit, I did get one of the first Laser disc player by Pioneer but only because Rainbow released the Straight Between The Eyes Concert on Laser disc. It took me many years before I got a CD. I said back then that CD wouldn't last!! Guess I was wrong but I kept and still used all my LP's. Now, here they are coming back. In the last month, I have purchased 35 Lp's. My wife hasn't found out yet.

Oh, I still have a Super Beta Hi Fi?

It is a good thing. I am just glad I have enough turntables to get through the rest of my life. I would hate to have to buy a decent used table in the next couple of years.

I've been thinking the same thing. Of course, most of the "kids" getting newly into vinyl will be buying new TTs from Pro-ject or Rega or a "DJ" table from Technics or Vestax... but still, if vinyl continues to grow and people start learning more about it, the better vintage TTs should climb in price, too. Limited (and even gradually shrinking) supply with increasing demand should see to that.

That thinking isn't stopping me from selling off some of the mid-fi tables I have around, but it is causing me to plan on getting all the "great" TTs I plan to buy a bit sooner rather than later. I figure the coming year or two --while the world economy is still bad-- will be a good time to pick up a few still-affordable or bargain deals on high-end tables from Japan.

Then in a few years, if vinyl continues to grow in popularity and the economic situation finally improves, the prices on such turntables could go way up, putting them beyond my budget. At which point I will be glad I got them while I could. If that doesn't happen, well, that's okay, too... at least I had a plausible excuse for buying them, and I will enjoy the turntables! :music: :D

Michael

Again, I've had the same thought. Only a relative handful of people producing vinyl today have experience that dates back to the "golden days" of records, and there is always a "learning curve" when it comes to maintaining production quality with items like these. Even for people and companies with long experience and some expertise, greatly increased volumes will stretch their ability to maintain quality levels, at least for a while.

Still, it's a very good thing to see so many old titles being re-released. It will help re-inject more life into the medium, as well as help preserve the music itself.

Two interesting things within the past few days: First, the announcement by RIAA and MPAA about their affordable online offerings and major changes in the distribution and anti-piracy programs, regional restrictions, etc... and now a clear indication of increasing titles being released on vinyl.

Think the two might be related, strategically and not ONLY because of market demand? After all, an LP is very hard to "pirate" in an analog format, other than making a tape of it, and no one is talking about a revival of tape. Digitizing it makes it essentially another "download", but the economic incentive to pirate that is now being eliminated by cheap, legitimate copies. We may see a future world with cheaper "intangible" recordings all digital, and higher-quality "tangible" recordings all on vinyl!

There have been reports of *some* reissues sounding bad, so, like some have said, be careful.

But anyway, huge sellers like Prince: Purple Rain, you can usually find at used record stores for 50 cents or a buck. I can't see paying audiophile reissue prices for nostalgia titles when the original issues are available for almost nothing.

I'm about to see how a new audiophile cut of Permanent Waves sounds. Am hopeful for the quality. Meanwhile all this talk of popularity of vinyl and shrinking demand of TTs makes me think I need to snatch up a couple more decks while I can still afford it. :)

For now the lack of popularity is great for all of us. I was able to get into a turntable and craploads of (classical) records without much trouble. But LPs are popular enough that it's pretty darned hard to find rock/jazz LPs in the thrifts. :)

I have been checking out Ebay for TT's lately. They seem to have a good supply. I have an old Pioneer PL-200. It's in very near Mint condition but it's only semi auto. My hand is not as steady as it was when I bought it new back in 77 so I been looking for a fully automatic. I guess I have to wait until after the holidays but I think I'll look there.

I too have been looking at the thrift stores for vinyl but I would look them over very careful. I'm very particular what I put under my stylus. One Lp I purchased sounded horrible. I'd never purchase a used LP without a very bright light.

I have had great luck buying vinyl at soundstagedirect.com but only new.

I got that link from right here at Audio Karma. There are a few other online stores. I guess a few stores are starting to carry Vinyl again. Here in my area I haven't seen them yet but Central New York is slower then most areas. Maybe Syracuse I'm sure which is a little north from me. There is a couple sellers on Ebay I had good luck with. You have to be very careful there too. Before buying vinyl on Ebay make sure the seller has been selling for a good long time with a very HIGH feedback rating. I've been stung before and I'd hate for anyone here to get bit too.

One question and I'm outta here. With my shaky hands, does anyone have a suggestion on a way I can clean my stylus without causing damage? It's getting to become a problem lately. I do have a problem with the shakes!!!

Have a great day all

Have you ever just recorded music directly to your Beta?? I have many times. It works great. I have done it on the slow speed which is still twice the speed of cassette and the sound is really good.

I haven't done it in years as the Beta hasn't worked very good and I can't find anyone that repairs them anymore but I still have all my concerts on Beta format. That's primarily what I used it for. I'm a concert junkie. All hard rock/metal. I was a head banger before any one even knew what the term ment  I did have them all transfered to DVD a couple of years ago. I didn't think I'd ever be able to use the Beta so I thought I better get it done when I had the opportunity.

Have you ever just recorded music directly to your Beta??

Many times. I pick out records/tunes that I like to hear frequently and record them from the TT through my Yamaha receiver or Dynakit PAS 3 to the Sony Beta. They sound great. :music:

Interestingly, Beta Hi Fi specs are not shabby.

When the Sony breaks I'll be very unhappy.:tears:

Regards.

I use a small soft brush, lock the arm down and gently move the brush back to front on the stylus. You can clean/polish the stylus to some degree by dropping the arm/cartridge/stylus down onto one of those eraser pads several times. I'm sure others will have some suggestions.

Speaking of new vinyl and the terminology of 180 gms this or that, what does it mean as a record specification? ........... and, Who spec's groove spacing, flip side spacing, vinyl quality etc, etc? Do any new releases meet the old standards? Regards.

I think the biggest plus of the 180gr. is the weight. Towards the end of the vinyl in the 80's-have you noticed how thin the vinyl was getting. The heavy vinyl being 180gr. gives more stability/less warp? This of course just being my opinion.

For the price of them, I really don't think they are worth all that money. I didn't see the big difference in sound quality. I did however just purchase Deep Purple-Made In Japan on 180GR. to replace my original copy. I really needed that replaced and I am a HUGE Deep Purple fanatic. That LP is worse then worn out. It is worth the $35 I paid. I got that on Ebay though. At another online site, the name fails me now, the price was over $100. Noway could I do that now at Holiday time. Although I would have after the Holidays if I hadn't found it on Ebay.

I am very into Purple!!

That's a great idea. Most of the used LPs I've run across, even if they look clean at the store look dirty as crap at home... altho they almost always clean up fine for me... only ones that seem to concern me are the ones with pretty bad surface scratches.
