Saw Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, a.k.a The Standards Trio, last night at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia. They are touring to commemorate their 25th anniversary together. If they come near you, and you have any inclination toward piano trio jazz, I highly recommend this show. Jarrett is just from another planet, both in terms of skill and idiosyncracy (although he was on his best behavior last night; you never which Jarrett is going to show up), and I bet this is the closest we'll ever get to hearing what Bill Evans did during the height of his trio days. It remains weighted 60-40 in favor of three soloists playing together, rather than a smoothly integrated "group", but that is part of their appeal, IMO.
Venue acoustics play a big part in my enjoyment of live music, and I think Verizon Hall, which looks like it was carved out of one gigantic piece of African hardwoord, is just a wonderful hall (minds differ on that; there is much controversy in Philadelphia over a plan to "tinker" with the acoustics in the hall). It would be worth driving extra miles to get to a good venue if they one they are playing in near you is questionable.
