I just got an Alpha 230 given to me but don't much about power amps.
Two Questions.
1. Is it a piece of crap ?
2. How do I hook it up? I need a preamp right?
I don't have a preamp so can I hook it up to one of my intergrated receivers ?

It is not a piece of crap
Yes you need a preamp.
If you integrated has a pre out, yes you can use that.

Nikko made a few pieces of crap, but NONE of them had "ALPHA" printed on the face plate.

Yeah it looks really well built under the hood just confused by the lack of controls ... will this this make my speakers catch fire seems like it might pack a punch .... Is it worth anything? I got it for free

Its a power amplifier.
Power Amplifiers do not offer lots of controls (If any) other than the gain knobs. If your speakers can handle 150 watts each (It's rated 120 watts per channel but, it is very conservative) you shouldn't have any problems.
Actually, your speakers could handle on 2 watts and, they won't get damaged providing you don't drive the amplifier hard.

I've been enjoying an Alpha 220 since more than ten years. I belive the 230 is a successor of the 220, and it should be a nice sounding amp, with lots of clean bass. Congratulations!

The Alpha 220 and 230 are electrically identical. The only difference is the updated front panel cosmetics of the 230.

I have two (2) Alpha 230's and they are very well built and I have no complaints about the way they sound. Enjoy. :thmbsp:

Congrats!
1. Is it a piece of crap ?
No, it's a fine amp! I used to use one in my main rig before the quest for ever more power knocked it down a notch.
2. How do I hook it up? I need a preamp right?
I don't have a preamp so can I hook it up to one of my intergrated receivers ?
Yes, you need something to use as a pre- amp. If you have a reveiver with pre-amp outputs, you can use it to drive the Nikko.
Enjoy!
