I am hoping some of you out there can help. I am always on the search for some new music but lately have hit a wall. I like all kinds of music but lately have had a craving for jazzy, downbeat, electronic type music or some cool jazz piano or cool chill. Let me give you a few artists similar to what I am looking for and hopefully some of you would give me some suggestions for different but similar artists so I can get turned onto something new. Any help would be much appreciated.

Brian Culbertson
Zero 7
Hooverphonic
Kid Loco
Keiko Matsui
Blue Nile
Morcheeba
Massive Attack
Beth Orten
Nightmares on Wax
St Germaine

Portishead? Dummy is the classic, Third is pretty far out there but their best in my opinion.

Dead Can Dance.

I think you might like Talk Talk- Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock in particular.

Seefeel.

Maybe the Notwist.

I guess you have In a Silent Way? Not electronica, but it pretty much sets the standard for jazzy and down tempo.

Have you heard Feist - "Let it Die"? I like it better than her more recent one...

How about Olive "Extra Virgin"? It's getting a bit old, but ... kind of fits in with the Morcheeba / Nightmares on Wax and some of the other stuff you describe. Really adore that album.

If you're into electronica I was fairly pleased with Afterdark - New York City

Not that it's needed, but another thumbs up on In A Silent Way -- just discovered this at the library and it's now at the top of my wanted list.

Speaking of which ... you never know, the Library may have some interesting stuff. That's what I've been doing lately to expand my horizons a little...

Seefeel- most people seem to like Quique the best. I prefer their less user-friendly sound like their LP Succour, but that is not the best starting point.

Notwist- I think Neon Golden is the one, for sure.

Hey, let us know what you think of all these.

I ended up buying 26 cd's in the last 24 hours. Would have bought more but some were too expensive at this time but will keep looking. Some I bought have not been mentioned here such as Tricky, F.C. Kahuna, Everything but the girl, Hiroshima, William Orbit and his Strange Cargo's, But keep the suggestions coming am always looking to get turned on to something new. These should keep me busy for a while. Will let you know my thoughts on some of these you guys have suggested that I did purchase.

I agree or at least an ongoing thread for this type of music though it does encompass several types of music...Electronica, downbeat, chill, triphop, underground dance/techno , urban rythem etc. etc. There is so much out there to introduce people to, like I said I just bought 40 cd's of music I have never heard before and I am sure it just scratches the surface.

Has anybody mentioned the ECM Label? Lot of jazz/electronic. Terje Rypdal's Vossabrygg falls right into that category. ECM is about to re-release a shit load of their back catalog. I think they already started but I would have to double check to verify if it was last week, or sometime next month. Much of this has been out of print, or never out on CD. I must admit I have almost heard of none of this music mentioned in this thread with the exception of ST. Germain.

Wow, so many good ones mentioned here. Lemme' think, what can I add?

Fila Brazillia (fun, a little upbeat at times, but still chill)
Les Hommes (have a bossa-nova cheese flair)
Federico Abuele (dark and dubby)
Gotan Project (dt with a dash of tango)
Thievery Corporation (dubby and spacey)
Lemon Jelly (happy sugary loops but very chill)
DJ Krush (darker dt with some hip hop once in a while)
DJ Shadow (closer to underground hip hop at times, but still dt)

I was really into down tempo for a while. SomaFM.com has a lot of good stations, with Groove Salad being their canonical down tempo station. I found myself tuning into Secret Agent and Beat Blender from time to time as well. Sometimes Beat Blender gets on a jazzy deep house kick that I enjoy.

Thanks for sharing....I have been looking at some of these as well..... If you wouldn't mind or if you can ....can you suggest an album of each artist so I can check them out. I have heard of three of your suggestions before but have yet to buy any. Also please suggest some of the Jazzy deep house stuff too from beat blender. Thannks Augy:music:

Any of the Shulman albums are awesome...give those a look. Bluetech is also another good one. My favorite record label is Twisted Records...they have quite a few good artists. www.twisted.co.uk

Is shulman and Bluetech an artist or record label if its a label can you make some specific suggestions as to artists and albums.... I think we all would appreciate it. Thanks Augy:music:

Yeah the Jakob double LP cost me $40+ since I bought it at an overseas store and it was in Euros + international shipping.

I also bought God is An Astronaut - Far From Refuge LP and speak to the leader of that band on myspace occasionally. His name is Niels and is a really nice guy.
He even got all the band to sign the cover of the LP before it shipped to me.
:music:

I can only imagine how much you've spent. My wallet is a little low right now so I haven't bought anything new lately.

Thats pretty cool and autographed copy.....never know someday it may be worth a whole lot more. As far as what I've spent , I am afraid to add it up right now....don't want to ruin the feeling, but easily a few hundred sooner or later the credit card bill will come. But I'll have lots of new music to keep me happy. Can't wait for it all to arrive. Thanks for all your help but keep it going. I'm sure there is still lots more out there its a big world !! Augy

Hard to find on cd. Very very rare and expensive if you do find it.
I only have 256k mp3's of a few of his albums that I bought off of emusic.com since I'm a subscriber. I wish I did have the higher quality cd's of them though.

Fila Brazillia (fun, a little upbeat at times, but still chill)
Les Hommes (have a bossa-nova cheese flair)
Federico Abuele (dark and dubby)
Gotan Project (dt with a dash of tango)
Thievery Corporation (dubby and spacey)
Lemon Jelly (happy sugary loops but very chill)
DJ Krush (darker dt with some hip hop once in a while)
DJ Shadow (closer to underground hip hop at times, but still dt)

To add to what Zeromancer posted:

Fila Brazillia - Jump Leads, Maim That Tune
Les Hommes - The Mood is Modal
Federico Abuele - Gran Hotel Buenos Aires
Gotan Project - La Revancha del Tango
Lemon Jelly - LemonJelly.ky
DJ Krush - Jaku

My favorite Thievery Corporation albums are:
The Richest Man In Babylon
The Mirror Conspiracy
DJ Kicks

If you really like Thievery, I highly recommend you listen to the Federico Abuele album I listed above.

It's hard for me to remember some of the more housey stuff from Beat Blender. St. Germain was definitely among them. Check out "The Verve Remixed" series for classic jazz tracks turned danceable. Also you might like Blue Six - Beautiful Tomorrow. De Phazz - Death By Chocolate is jazzy, kitsch, and fun.

Thanks for your input....I'm getting a little discouraged as I really only like a few of the purchases made so far....though I did not expect to like them all. I also purchased a few you suggested. Richest man in babylon just now. Fila Brazillia, Cafe del mar. Still looking for federico Abuelle, Lemon jelly and gotan project,

On another note I realize music is a personal thing what one loves another may hate...I just reviewed Mark Farina , Connected ... didn't like it at all, the same repetative electronic beat in almost every song.
Slopho, Hotel sleep ...liked it O.K. slow and easy with a great female voice.
So far Theivery Corp is the only one I really love so I will try to find federico. Thanks Augy:music:

Just remembered these guys:

Kruder & Dorfmeister - K & D Sessions
Gorillaz - Laika Come Home (Dub remixes of their self titled album. Not exactly dt, but in a similar vein. I happen to be big into dub.)

Reading/participating in this thread has turned me back onto dt/trip hop. I'm listening to a Pandora station that started with Nightmares on Wax. It has been really solid thus far.

About getting discouraged, and buying things you don't end up liking...well I highly recommend sampling things first. We can give you directions on where to look, but it is ultimately up to your tastes what you like. Try listening to the samples on Amazon.com. Type the artists we mention into Pandora, and see where the station takes you. Download (gasp!) a couple of MP3s (gasp!) to get a feel for what a particular artist/album is like. If you don't take interest in what you hear, go on to the next artist.

Thanks for the first suggestion K&D sessions..... Gorrilaz I already have one. I started listening to samples on amazon and other places but thats when my computer caught a virus that crashed it. It cost me a few hundred and a few days of time without it. I need my computer for work as I am a photographer and everything is done on computer now. I'd rather buy the cd and if I dont like it I can always sell it on e-bay. I know music is a personal thing and don't expect to like everyone someone suggests. I hope I didn't offend anyone that made a suggestion as well. I appreciate all of them!! Augy:music:

Laika Come Home is very different from any other Gorillaz album. Like I said, it is dub remixes of songs from their self titled album. The tracks are totally taken out of context, and reworked into a result nearly unrecognizable from the original. If you aren't familiar with dub, look into it a little. Read the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dub_music, listen to some. You might find you like it. :)

Hmm, I would say it's highly unlikely that you got a virus from Amazon. :scratch2: Artist MySpace pages are great for samples as well.
