New guy here...after missing out on a half dozen receivers on ebay, I finally landed a KR-3090 that looks to be in very good shape. Any opinions on this unit?

Now I'll be looking for $25 speakers to match. I was thinking maybe a pair of low end Polk bookshelf speakers. This is for my small hunting camp, thanks!

Hi & welcome to AK Coldmark,

I don't know much about the Kenwood, but if you like it then that is all that matters. You will find some nice people in this forum that can help you. In looking for vintage stuff, check all avenue's, like the SA's, GW's, Thrift Stores & the likes.

Some people here on AK could steer you in right direction if you listed your area.
I hope you find what you are looking for in the speaks.

$25 is a small price to pay for some good speaks unless you come across a nice deal. Be patient. I am having to be in finding a nice TT for under $100 without having it shipped.

Welcome to AK!

Don't jump on the first "low end Polks" you find. There are some good speakers out there that you can get cheap if you know what to look for. A couple that come to mind are the little Mission bookshelf speakers and the old MCS "time aligned" speakers. I have 2 pair of the Missions and have only about $60 into them, including shipping! MCS was sold by JC Penney way back when. I don't know who actually made them but they are decent...and cheap.

EDIT> Since you are new here I thought I would ad that it's not proper to use the forums to buy or sell equipment. There is a classified section where you can post a "wanted to buy" ad if you want.(it's free) Maybe someone will have something to suite your needs.

Thanks for all the good advice. I wasn't at all trying to buy speakers here, just getting advice, but point taken. I will look into those recommendations. I can certainly afford to spend more but it's for my camp and it's kind of fun to look for decent used stuff at a good price.

Estate sales are where its at!!!! The deals are incredible. Look around the High end district of your area because that is where the elders that are passing on (GOD rest there souls). But these old guys had the money to fork out for nice gear at the time and most of the families think that this is just old junk. "A jewel in the Nile" to us audiophiles.
Good luck hunting!

I second the estate sales, and if you browse through the speakers forum you will find lots of info and pics on speakers. Educate yourself on pics and specs and good hunting! PS: Welcome to AK!!

Welcome to the Kenwood club!

I have a KR-5150 that I'm listening to right now and a KR-2400 as well.

For speakers look for a pair of EPI 100 models. The surrounds might be bad but it's an easy fix. They match well with these old receivers.

Enjoy friend. :thmbsp:

Keep your eyes peeled for a very plain looking speaker with the words, "Made in Denmark" stamped on the connector panel on the back. They are Dynaco A25's and I found a pair that quite a few people passed by at the local Goodwill store. Mine still have the GW price stickers on them:D Down the road you can upgrade the tweeters in them with the Morel 20s. I did and they are even better than before...which was actually pretty darn good...especially considering what I paid for them!

Welcome :) How about a picture of that new Kenny. I don't think I've seen that model. As for speakers, great advise here. Do some research and be ready when you spot something. Theres nothing like seeing some speakers and wondering if they are decent and wishing you had a computer to look them up handy.

It was my first separate receiver. Got it at HI FI sale in D.C around 1980. I have the complete specs if your interested. It is 26 watts per ch. Nice looking basic receiver.

I will be looking for some of those speakers. I want something that looks and sounds vintage. I don't have my Kenwood KR-3090 yet. I will be sure to post a pic when I get it. Thanks!
