View Full Version : Anyone heard 'The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle' Reissue? Ingo 09-23-2008, 08:06 PM I really wanna have this LP but I can't find an original. Is the reissue any good? MichaelJ 09-23-2008, 08:39 PM I have it on cd, has it been reissued on LP? If so, I want it. The CD's fine but I need to have it on Vinyl. I'll ask Seth at Sound Stage about it. MichaelJ 09-24-2008, 08:59 AM Looks like you can get it on Music Stack. http://www.musicstack.com/album/zombies/odessey+_apz_+oracle I'm going to wait to hear back from Soundstage but I've had good luck with Music Stack in the past too. I got a Left Banke LP from them a few months back that I had been looking for, for years. shrinkboy 09-24-2008, 10:54 AM http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=38538 a little steep, but its a great record KeninDC 09-24-2008, 11:49 AM I have not heard the Japanese pressing. It could be excellent. Look for the UK Big Beat label version if you can find it. It used the original analog masters. ponderbear 09-24-2008, 12:01 PM Have you heard the Big Beat one, though? I think that's the one I bought a year or so ago and flipped it immediately for being overly sibilant. I'm pretty sure it was the Big Beat one, it was definitely a UK import. MichaelJ 09-24-2008, 12:19 PM Seth just got back to me. Sound Stage will be getting it in soon. A week or so. Not sure of any of the details, 180 gram? label? I'm going to wait to see what they have before I drop $50 or so, although the Japanese pressing is very tempting. Pretty exciting either way. It's a great record. KeninDC 09-24-2008, 12:25 PM I have the Big Beat LP version. It is a UK label. No sibilance issues on my pressing. It was a 30th anniversary deal (there is also a Big Beat CD with the original stereo mix and a reconstructed mono mix). As for used options, the original mono LP (original mono masters still lost?) sells for about $500. I've never found an original stereo UK or US pressing that was not in dodgy shape. If you run across "Time of the Zombies" in your used LP shop, that set contains the entire O&O and is supposed to sound swell. I have not heard it. With few exceptions, I enjoy Japanese pressings even though many use dubs rather than the master tapes (not all, by any means). You usually get whisper quiet vinyl and meticulous mastering. They are rarely mastered "hot," so a good system will bring out the dynamic range. I saw the Zombies play O&O live. Arthur Lee and Love opened for them. Ken Celt 09-24-2008, 12:30 PM I used to have "Time of The Zombies" (orange Epic label) and it indeed had all of O&O and sounded quite good. Plus, you got all of their hits to boot! onepixel 09-24-2008, 12:34 PM Took me awhile to find it but I have Time of the Zombies. Excellent. JohnVF 09-24-2008, 02:03 PM I have the Big Beat O&O reissue and Time of the Zombies (O & O is my favorite album of all time, excepting maybe DSOTM). Time of the Zombies sounds better, IMO. I experienced the sibilance to a degree, but it went away with a new cartridge (AT-150mlx) that tracked better. I didn't have this problem with Time of the Zombies. I've actually never come across an original pressing, but have seem Time of the Zombies a few times besides the time I bought it. ekmanning5 09-24-2008, 03:07 PM I have Time of the Zombies as well. In fact I owned it for about two years before I realized the second record was the complete O & O. :stupid: I agree that Odessey and Oracle may be one of the greatest albums of all time. :thmbsp: JohnVF 09-24-2008, 03:22 PM Anyone out there who loves the Zombies...there is a fantastic CD box set available that has pretty much everything you could want. It's called Zombie Heaven, and it really is heaven for a Zombies fan. ponderbear 09-24-2008, 03:27 PM I experienced the sibilance to a degree, but it went away with a new cartridge (AT-150mlx) that tracked better. Could have been my prob too. it was before I had a dedicated space for record playing, just a table on the bench at that point. JohnVF 09-24-2008, 03:48 PM Could have been my prob too. it was before I had a dedicated space for record playing, just a table on the bench at that point. I tried a Shure (m-97he) and an old Signet MM and it (sibilance) was pretty prominent, but I thought perhaps I had just set the cartridge up poorly. But yeah, it's not there with the AT cartridge. Celt 09-24-2008, 05:02 PM Thought I'd share these label scans. The flipside of "Time Of The Season" is the excellent "Friends Of Mine". onepixel 09-24-2008, 05:09 PM Thought I'd share these label scans. The flipside of "Time Of The Season" is the excellent "Friends Of Mine". Cool! Since I don't really play 45s I'd totally forgotton about the Green Parrot. Thanks for the blast from the past! KeninDC 09-24-2008, 05:22 PM Steve Hoffman mastered a DCC Zombies Greatest CD which I have. He also did an Audio Fidelity SACD of Zombies greats. Both of these are "audiophile" quality. My DCC disc popped up at my used LP shop. I got it for $5. Celt 09-24-2008, 06:12 PM I have the DCC greatest hits and the Rhino version of O&O. As much as I tried when it came out, I never could secure a copy of O&O (Date/CBS) or Small Face's 'Odgden Nut Flake' (Immediate/CBS) when they came out. But finding "Itchycoo Park", "Tin Soldier" and "Time Of The Season" on 45's was easy. (Same for Spirit's "I Got A Line On You" (Ode/CBS).) Ingo 09-25-2008, 04:37 AM Thanks for the replys folks. I will probably just look for 'Time of The Zombies' instead of buying the 'O&O' reissue. onepixel 09-25-2008, 12:41 PM I listened to Time of The Zombies last night. Good stuff for sure. And I read the inner gatefold articles for the first time. Wonderful condensed history of the band, things I never new. |
