About two weeks ago I picked up a Thorens TD-280 turntable for 5 bucks. It looked like it had just come out of the box. It was however missing the dustcover hinges and cartridge. Took care of the cartridge problem by picking up a Grado Black. The hinges are another story though. Anybody here have an idea where I can find a couple? Or does anyone have one and perhaps have a recommendation on how I can fabricate a pair. I know its not the top of the line but it does sound quite nice and I'd like to add it to one of my secondary systems. Thanks in advance.

Although not TOTL, the TD-280 is still a pretty decent unit.

Being relatively recent, you may want to get in touch with Thorens for those hinges. As for a replacement dustcover, turntabledepot manufactures them by order, and they are AK sponsors.

Dustcover I have...hinges are missing. I Googled Thorens parts but was not successful in finding what I needed. Is Thorens still around or did they go bankrupt?

Evan: Not quite "still here", rather "here again" - and apart from the logo and style of nomenclature, the new Thorens company doesn't really have much to do with the good old Thorens company. Unfortunately...

Manfred, can't say I am shocked. Maybe they will still have suitable parts!

Hmmm, I'm not sure - the dustcover of the current 295IV looks different (the receptacles for the hinges are placed a bit more inwards than on the 280), but the hinges themselves might be identical... Hmmm, no, it doesn't seem so - I've just found a better pic in the manual: The hinges on the 295IV look more like those on my Philips AFx77 series models.

But as the new Thorens company practically has no spare parts to offer for the old Thorens models anyway, it might be smarter to contact Rolf Kelch instead.

I have the same one, and Thorens parts, a few years ago, were available from someone in Connecticut that bought the old stock. When I lived up in the woods, I bought belts from him through the mail. I'm not sure he is still in business, but it's worth a search. I use a local audio shop where I live now.
This year I had the wiring replaced with some Kimber Kable, and the ics plugs and wires replaced with an upgrade, too.
The Grado black is a good match, and I'm thinking of moving upscale to another level Grado, I think the table and arm can handle it.
Do put it on a scrap of granite or marble, or in a sandbox.
It could also probably use a better bottom plate to dampen it, a project down the road.
Good luck in your search.
