This thing appeared on CL a couple weeks ago, says it's working and in great shape. Had it up for $75, so I shot him an email and offered $25 and my VR VCX-500 in trade for it with a polite no thanks as a response.

Yesterday he emailed me out of the blue and asked if I was still interested, I figured something was up so I said i would but for $20 cash. He had claimed when I first contacted him that it had been recently serviced by the owner he was selling it for, no he said it had been se4rviced in '01, new belys etc, but when a guy came to buy it it just made a nasty noise.

Having had three decks now that pegged meters when turned on and made all sorts of noise, I had an idea it was the record switch, so I figured for $20, it was good for parts if it turned out to be something major, he accepted immediately and I drove down to pick it up.

Met the guy and got the whole story, says it was a friend of his who was into stereos and such but he'd had a stroke in '03, the deck had in fact gotten an overhaul in 03, and had basically been sitting in the guys house for 5 years untouched. I even got the reciept, lost it already, but I know the shop and it was legitimate work.

As you can tell, it's in very nice shape, the case is almost spotless, a good scrubbing and we'll have her shiny new looking. Got it home, went straight to the shop and blew out 5 years of house dust (had to have been a non-smoker), hit all the controls with deox and got the record switch as best I could without major disassembly and she's working flawlessly, as in pefecto, made a couple recordings, been listening to Chris Rea, for $20 bucks and gas, I finally have my TOTL vintage tape deck I've been searching for, and I think I got a hell of a deal, saw one went for over $200 on da 'bay, and this is definitely going to clean up to be near mint.

And notice how nicely it goes with my new Sony receiver I got yesterday.

Heck I even hit an SA on the way home and scored # very minty Jean-Luc Ponty LPs, can it get any better?

As I suspected, the only problem

Very nice!

I had one of those but for some reason I sold it, wish I hadn't!

Good for you, that's a heck of a good deal. The 9191 is a very nice deck. That record switch is notorious for causing all kinds of problems.
Mark (thefixer), has written up a nice step by step to get to it properly.
I would advise really getting at that one. Let me know if you ca'nt find it.
I'm starting dinner now, or I would find the link.

That's the one. Good luck with it. :thmbsp:
You may as well go in while you have easy access to everything. I plan swapping mine into the old entertainment center pretty soon to handle my cassette needs for the winter. It will give my JVC KD-3030 a break.
I used to like taking the gear all apart, now it's more of a chore.

I just got a CT-F9191 on epray for $20...yeah...sounds sketchy, I know, but there was a one-line description and a tiny picture that indicated it was in good cosmetic shape and worked...so I guess most people were afraid to bid...

I'll either get lucky with a winner...or have a decent parts deck for another time...

I'll be back with pictures and a report in a few days...

P.S. props to whoever can guess what my new avatar is from.

Congrats on the find. I had my deck 'sweetened' by a multi-talented silver miner about 3 years ago and it still operates & sounds great. Old cassettes I bought in the early 80s have never sounded better!

Post pics once you get it totally cleaned up!

I picked up a 9191 off an ad from CL. I took a cassette with me and sure enough the belt problem that caused the play to shut off after about 5 seconds of play surfaced. I said, gee sorry, I've never replaced the belt on a deck before, so I don't know if I want to try (true, as it was just after I started looking at vintage). The owner said I want it out of the garage, will you give me $5? I said how about $3 and he said it's yours. Well, I replaced the belts and now have a 9191 that runs perfectly and has a perfect case. Unfortunately, something was spilled on the face that may have been mildly acidic as it seems to have etched the aluminum in spots. Oh well, can't complain.
