Found these at a local thrift. All are black label, heavy vinyl, US release, Verve records. Does someone know more about Verve and the quality of these recordings ? These records sound excellent.

I'm listening right now to Blue Pyramid by Johnny Hodges and Wild Bill Davis. Man, this sounds sweet.

Yes, typical thrift store album pricing.

I actually found these a few week ago, and was unfamiliar with Verve, but I knew I liked the artists. I took them out yesterday and was amazed first by the heaviness of the vinyl and then the sound, you could tell right away these are great recordings. So I googled Verve and found they are highly regarded albums. I'm lucky I grabbed all 12 that were in the bin at the thrift.

Verve was a creation of Norman Grantz in 1956. Grantz was one of the industry leaders in bringing Jazz and black artists to the public, starting in the late 40s. He sold Verve to MGM in 1960 and went on to found Pablo records. I have many jazz recordings on both labels and they are excellent.
Grantz, was Ella Fitzgeralds manager from the mid 50s until she died.

You are right Ed, this Oscar Peterson is a magic man on the keyboard. OMG is he good.

And gotta love these live recordings where you hear him humming / grunting to the music and you hear the clink and clank of the cocktail glasses in the audience. Sweet.

Listening right now to "I Remember Clifford" from the Something Warm album. Amazing song.

Way to go Snade. Great score. Norman Granz had a knack for recording great jazz artists well. That man loved his jazz.

Cheers

Mark, Mrs. Manning has come around to the dark side. When she's out and about she stops in at the thrift and looks for me now. I've told her that any jazz record on Verve, Emarcy, Impulse, or Clef is a "buy now, ask questions later" piece of vinyl. :music:

What about Blue Note? :D And I forgot Prestige Yellow Labels.

Here's an Ed Thigpen record that is great especially for the title track, http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Out%20of%20the%20Storm:1921115407.

Remember Frank Zappa's first records are on Verve with the Mothers. Now if somebody finds Yusef Lateef "Before The Dawn" on Verve then you got somethin baby. I saw a Mono copy of "Freak Out" Tonight but it was pretty rough.
