View Full Version : Lunchtime Purchases - (1)John Hiatt & (2) Delaney & Bonnie
JDaniel 05-11-2004, 04:19 PM I'm a weak person. I went to Coconuts Music at lunch in search of two albums, and didn't find them. So what's a fella to do but buy two other albums?
I bought a couple of 2003 releases. First up is John Hiatt - The Best Of, 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection. I've got a few other 20th century discs - some the quality is good, some not so good. This one is very good. Great lineup of tunes too:
1. Memphis in the Meantime
2. Riding With The King
3. Thing Called Love
4. Tennessee Plates
5. Slow Turning
6. Have a Little Faith In Me
7. Real Fine Love
8. Perfectly Good Guitar
9. Thank You Girl
10. Feels Like Rain
11. Buffalo River Home
12. Angel
Next up is Delaney & Bonnie & Friends - D&B Together - Remaster. It includes six bonus tracks. Don't know if you all remember this duo, but they had a Who's Who of music join them on their album. This album includes performances by Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Tina Turner, Steve Cropper, and Dave Mason.
Can't wait to cue it up tonight. Tracklist includes:
1. Only You Know And I Know
2. Wade In The River Of Jordan
3. Sound Of The City
4. Well, Well
5. I Know How It Feels To Be Lonely
6. Coming Home
7. Move 'Em Out
8. Big Change Comin'
9. Good Thing (I'm On Fire), A
10. Groupie (Superstar)
11. I Know Something Good About You
12. Country Life
13. Over And Over
14. I'm Not Your Lover, Just Your Lovee
15. Good Vibrations
16. Are You A Beatle Or A Rolling Stone
17. How Glad I Am, (You Don't Know)
18. California Rain

I was thinking about picking that up myself.

Hey Back Alley - well said.
And welcome aboard the AK train. It's a great place to hang out. Post some of what you are listening to. We have a daily thread going where we all post what we are listening to on that day.

tentoze 05-11-2004, 11:20 PM I'm trying to remember the name of the c. 1970 movie that starred Barry something-or-other as the outsider running from the law in a hemi cuda or challenger out here in the wild west- he's hauling a$$ around the desert and comes up on Delaney & Bonnie & Friends playing out in the middle of NOWHERE...........I have the vhs tape back in FL, but obviously am suffering from Anheuser's tonight..........
helluva movie
Just remembered it- Vanishing Point....whew.

jguzman21 05-14-2004, 04:01 PM Just picked up John Hiatt & the Goners "Beneath This Gruff Exterior" .... So far so good. What is everyone else's opinion on this one?
Dave918, I am pretty excited about the Hiatt show, but first I have to make it through tonight...Concrete Blonde at the Gothic Theater in Denver. This is gonna be cool!!
john
Wornears 05-14-2004, 04:08 PM Hiatt's "Beneath..." is one of his best in years. ANY work with Sonny Landreth on it is amazing. Noticed the Robert Randolph avatar -- ever heard the Blind Boys of Alabama CD with he and Ben Haper?
jguzman21 05-14-2004, 04:15 PM Wornears, Why yes I have and it is amazing!! Since you have that, I assume that you have heard "The Word" with Randolph, Medeski, & North Mississippi Allstars. If you haven't I highly recommend it. Some amazing musicians, but Robert Randolph steals the show. I had a chance to see him at an outdoor venue this last fall...he brought the house down!!
Welcome to AK!!

It got a lot of high praise, but even being a huge Hiatt fan, I have to admit I don't play it very much. The Goners sound as tight and professional as ever, and at ease with the tunes, but the song-writing just doesn't strike me as very strong compared to so many other of Hiatt's records. Also, to my ears, the production seems to go further down the road first taken with "Tiki Bar", which to my ears takes it in a rather noisy and shrill direction. Of the 2 though, I much prefer Tiki Bar. Just my two pfennigs.
:)
JD you once again FORCED me to look over my sholder.. Get out of my chair and rumage through one of the crates of my OLD LP's.... And what did I find but... TAAAAA DAAAAAA
1. Delaney & Bonnie - D&B Together
2. Delaney & Bonnie - Home
and...
3. Delany & Bonnie and Friends - Motel Shot
Looked at the vinyl and it is in good shape.
I have some "snake oil" comming from:Down Under" (The Vinyl Solution - TVS) to clean and remove static from records before I attempt to transfer to CD's. When I get going and do D&B will be happy to pass ya' a copy...
omi
JDaniel 05-21-2004, 08:23 AM Hey thanks OMI. And I'd be interested in hearing a review of your "Snake Oil". I'm no vinyl expert, but have gotten back into vinyl after a too long hiatus. I just clean mine with cleaning solution and a velvet LP brush. I've downloaded the plans to make a DIY record vacuum, using a small shop vac. The total cost runs about $40 (vs $500 for a record vac). If I ever get a rainy weekend, I'm going to give it a try.
Let me know when you get the D&B transferred.
JD
JD,
Great minds think alike... I too am getting ready to do a DIY record cleaning system. Just as you did... DLed some info... I am CARPENTRY CHALLANGED... I have an old 10" radial arm saw that got verrrrrrry LITTLE use. Have some one where at work who is quite good so I am trying to work a deal... I give him the saw and stuff and he lets me help HIM build a few projects for me.. One will be the DIY record cleaner and another will be a display shelf thingy so I can get all the stuff off of the floor... The TT, tuners, amp, etc.... He is comming over this weekend... I think it is a done deal....
