I'm liking the look of these CS 88 speakers and that SX 838 receiver. the amp is broken, the ad says. what do you think for $80? I think the 838 alone is worth that.

Yes it looks good. I look at a pioneer sx 838 and the wanted about 200.00 for it.and it was in bad shape I did not get it. So 80.00 for the sx 838 and CS 88 sounds good to me:banana:

If they all work and are in as good of condition as they look then yes, $80 is a very good deal.

Amp is broken?

Ask them how it is broken, it could be as easy as pre out jumpers or some deoxit cleaning.

They do look good together but if it were me I would pass on the speakers and the amp is broken so make an offer for the broken amp.

The receiver looks like it's lit up so something must be working properly.

Looks like a fair offer to me.....

the owner says "I might have it hooked up wrong." it worked before his move last week, so I think this is a case of someone who thinks this gear is a "stero" :D I just can't see anything blowing up during a move.

I'd pass on all of it.

the receiver might need a main-in, pre-out jumper. It's lit up, so that is a good sign. Often, people who don't know anything about vintage equipment forgot that they need a jumper or patch cord for the main-in, pre-out.

Speakers look kind of cool. I think it might be a good price.

The speakers are the weak spot of that deal.

I'd go look at it and offer $50.

Wow, tough crowd!
I agree to check and see if it has pre/main jacks open.
Not everything can be a "Score", and sometimes you might have to pay fair market value.

Did not think there was a fair market value when item is sold as broken and "as is". The buyer will usually take what they can get.

You make valid points, but considering that an SX-636 (2 steps down), recently sold for $70.00, and a pair of CS-77A's (at least 1 step down IMHO),
went for $125.00. Also, I'm guessing that it is local to the OP to check out, and the absence of the pre/main jacks would only still be a long shot for negotiating the price down. No shipping either.
I've never been any good at that sort of thing, I usually pays my money, and takes my chances.

if they're the 88A you'll probably need to refoam the tweeters which will set you back around $30 definately not worth it for a mediocre sounding speaker had a pair was glad when they were sold

That's true. My 88A's are suffering from that, but the 88's are fine. If the grille covers come off with velcro, be sure and check them. If they're screwed in, they should be fine.
Of course, by the time you get to see them, you can verify if they are straight 88's, or "A" models.

I'd pass. Something else will come along soon. :)
