With a Pioneer SX-1010. A friend of mine has one, and he says it puts out 110WPC at either 8 or 4 ohms. I disagree. Who's right?

The manual says, 110 watts for both 8 and 4 ohms both driven at 1Khz. At 20hz its 100/105.

Ok, I'm going to take this one an' run with it. Correct me if I am wrong guys.

The design (logical, well thought-out), execution (over engineered, like a "brick shithouse" to quote THOR) and power output of the 1010 set the stage for Pioneer's future x50 and x80 series. Kamakiri sent his 1010 to Echo to get it overhauled/modded, and both parties were impressed with what this thing could do. (Tuner section has been praised as being quite good.)

More people on the board started sitting up and taking notice of the 1010 and its smaller siblings in the 9xx and 8xx series (I own a 838 and find myself agreeing with assertions about the smoothness of the sound ... but that's also because Echo was kind enough to run through mine as well).

Not that Kamakiri was the first to discover the amp; but it seems to me people started talking more and more about them after this ... with good reason. You will frequently hear about three 1010 qualities:

(1) build quality [obviously]
(2) flat tone, the adjective 'tubey' sometimes used
(3) power belying the specs

Now, I'm starting to believe there is a definite correlation between Audio Karma and eBay. Considering the amount of traffic at AudioKarma, praise here seems to correlate to higher prices on eBay - which is not necessarily a bad thing - there are still deals to be had for everyone. :)

I just picked one up and have to do some work on it.
Has a bad/leaked cap in the power supply and blew the main fuse.
Anyone have any info they'd like to throw my way?
It's one of the 18000uf 63v caps. What can I replace it with?
Anybody have a schematic?

Thanks for any info and I just noticed all the threads on this so I will read!

Well, I've got one on the shelf, and have not even plugged it in,but my bet is that it will have some issues that will need attention. Was just wondering if anyone out there has some opinions on this piece and if it would be worth throwing some money at it? I looked on the Epay, and there are none for sale.....curious. I have the Pioneer separates of the era, TOTL Tu9100 and Au9100, and they are sweet, although they really don't seem to have the 60 watts they claim. I'm a Marantz guy, so the Pionus is not a big deal for me. BAck in the day, when everyone sold it, I had two stereo stores and we had the opportunity to play with all the stuff. It seemed like good, reliable gear, but we could not compete with the department stores on price. Oh, just remembered, I do have a pair of HPM 100's and they are not bad at all.

Interestingly the SX-950 has larger main caps, 22,000 uf / 63 volt I think it is the true sleeper in the Pioneer line.

Uhhhh, you didn't try searching for completed auctions, I just found four... and the amounts, as well as the fact that THREE of the four went BUY IT NOW and the fourth had FOURTEEN bids should say something.....

So I'll say it, YES it's worth some work, and the work that's the biggest bang for the buck is DIY stuff; electronic (deoxit switches, deoxit and faderlube the pots, vacuum out the dust bunnies etc) cleanup and appearance cleanup.

Then see how it sounds...

Of course I'm prejudiced.....:naughty:

(after a few years of sitting, contact paths that MIGHT have had a chance at self cleaning due to friction of actuation get oxidized and sound crappy, lube in the pots might harden up a bit making them sound "rough", all other sorts of small hangar rash)
