View Full Version : RT 707: The anticipation is killing me!
MichaelJ 10-02-2008, 09:07 AM Rabbi Rich is putting together a 707 for me. Looks like a month or two before I see it. I’ve picked up ten reels of new tape, a new demagnetizer, head and tape cleaner, wooden q-tips, a splicing block, leader tape, sensing foil, splicing tape and new interconnects. I’m ready to rock! Tom Petty was right; The Waiting is the Hardest Part! I can barely stand it.

beans 10-02-2008, 09:35 AM I love mine and you'll love yours!! It makes great-sounding tapes and built like a tank, as one of the technicians on AK said. It's the heaviest piece of non-speaker equipment I own including a Revox B77, but that's not saying a whole lot.

I know I will and due to the sourse, I know it will be perfect.
spartanmanor 10-02-2008, 10:12 AM Congratulations! I live the looks of those along with the 909's
cableguy2 10-02-2008, 10:12 AM I just picked one up and will clean it up in a few weeks. It's a 701, not a 707 though. I probably will flip it as I have 4 ten inch reel to reels. Of course, maybe after I clean it up I will want to keep it too. LOL.

I may have seen the deck your getting from Rich on my recent trip to drop off my CT-F1000. It should be an awesome performer. Congrats!
meggy 10-02-2008, 01:03 PM They're great. I've got one, it's a little tank. Congrats, you'll love it.
MichaelJ 10-02-2008, 01:22 PM I'm pumped! For those of you who have one, a question. How does it sound @ 3 3/4 ips? I'm sure it's not as nice as 7.5, but is it acceptable? Yeah, one persons acceptable is anothers junk, but what do you think? It's just that you burn through tape at 7.5 so quickly... My X1000R with DBX sounds great at 3 3/4 but it's a different animal.

The noise floor will be a bit higher (more hiss), but the frequency response will be quite good. I calibrate my decks to Emtec LPR35 tape, available from US Recording, unless otherwise specified. That tape is superb, and you will have no problem enjoying 3-3/4 speed recordings.
While the hiss level will not be objectionable, it can be nearly eliminated, if desired, by a fully restored Phase Linear 1000, "Auto-Correlator". This unit does a number on hiss, without requiring any pre-encoding during the recording phase.
By the way, the deck that Señor Vato saw on my bench, is headed for Palmdale, CA. Yours is next...
Enjoy,
Rich P

I suspected as much! Thanks Rich!
KentTeffeteller 10-02-2008, 08:42 PM Gentlemen,
The RT-701 and 707 are excellent machines. Except for a trifle more tape hiss response at 3 3/4 IPS is excellent. These decks are tanks in weight and reliability. They are better transports than RT-901 and 909 machines. They play old thin acetate tape with ripple better than most anything else. I own a RT-707 and love mine. :tresbon:
basicblues 10-02-2008, 10:41 PM Pioneer RT-707 was my intro into R2R. I still have it and it's really a cool little player that will spoil you. I picked up an Akai GX-4000D several months back from the original owner which is a nice compact unit. I've been playing it lately - but - too late, I'm spoiled to auto-reverse. My 707 has worked perfectly but the last time I used it the tape would not switch directions, it switches then quickly switches back.
Next on my R2R horizon is my Pioneer RT-909. I had the belt already and ordered the pinch rollers yesterday from Pioneer. I've been studying Rich P's restoration thread having read it in it's entirety several times (required) and probably will hit it a few more times.
Here's a word to the wise... If ANY piece of the old gooey belt or pinch roller falls on your floor - PICK IT UP IMMEDIATELY! A small piece fell unnoticed on my shop floor and I stepped on it and briefly (that's all it took) stepped inside the house on the carpet. Now black gooey stuff is "on the carpet" which did NOT set well with wife at all. That happened today...it still there and I am wondering what it's going to take to make it "better" without bleaching an obvious chemical spot, probably sissors.

I use Brake clean on everything incuding carpet and it works great, just get a clean rag and go to it.
I would try the Brake Clean on the Garage floor first just to make sure that it is capable of breaking down the goo mess.
You should be able to get the good Chlorinated Brake in Arkansas,I have to go to Nevada or Arizona to get the good stuff anymore.

scotsilv 10-09-2008, 02:06 PM You've encouraged me to bring my 707 up from the basement where it's been in storage a number of years (dehumidified basement). Bought it about 15 years ago.
It even has the walnut veneer cabinet, which I understand is rare for the 701/707.
