after digging my akai gx-630dss 10" reel to reel 4 track/4 channel out of storage (where it has been for the last 17 years) i also found a box of home recorded r2r tapes that had been stored for the same amount of time.

i played a couple of them that had unlabled classical music recorded on Radio Shack tape/reels.

WHAT A MISTAKE!:nono:

i just spent the last 15 minutes cleaning the stickey oxide off all the heads and everything in the tape path. what an 'effing' mess!
i then tossed the RS tapes in the trash! there were 4 others besides the 2 i tried playing.

i received my new degausser today, used it on all my tape decks.
plus i got some 91% (been using 70%) isopropyl alchy, cleaned all the heads, paths, etc.

i'm now playing the original r2r soundtrack from 'all that jazz' @ 3.75 ips.
i still have the slight w/f issue but the CLARITY since degaussing...
WOW!

i didnt think the highs were lacking until after i degaussed the heads.

Glenn Miller Limited Edition (White Leatherette Cover 5 album set) recorded from vinyls in 1962, Single tracks @ 3-3/4. My dad made these when he went on Polaris Missile boat patrols in 1962-64. Scotch G.P. Tape. 2 1800' tapes. He played them on an AMPEX on the boat thru the Internal communications system. Considering their age, they sound fairly good. He still has the album. Hmmmmm.......maybe I'll re-do @ 7-1/2 2 track using the original vinyl.

Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs and Englishmen. 7.5 ips prerecorded from A&M, 1969?
Cry Me a River, Girl from the North Country, Let's go get Stoned, When something is wrong with my baby, ect. Cocker's signature voice is so unique. It was before his burnout and vomiting on stage phase. I must admit though, after going through recovery he still sounds great. I'm glad he didn't destroy himself, for his sake and ours. We've lost too many good artists over the years to alcohol and dope.

here we are, 4 months later.

last wed, 2-11-09, my sick akai gx630dss was turned over to a local tech repair guy, for installation of a 'new' capstan motor. i finally determined that the original capstan (the shaft of the direct drive cap. motor), was bent about 1/16" or less, and causing the flutter. so i got a replacement motor from rolf at vintage texas.
should be hearing something soon from repair guy.

in meantime, i bought a 'new'er gx630dss about 6 weeks ago off the bay.
it works and sounds great!

re thread title; last nite, played-

paul maynard, organ and harpsichord, 'keyboard music of the french court'.

ferrodynamics factory reel tape, 7.5 ips.
