I switched my receiver yesterday over to the FM tuner, and caught the tail end of a song playing on the local oldies station. I scribbled some of the lyrics, "way down below the ocean, where I want to be, she may be". I recalled the melody from the movie "Goodfellas", and at the end of the song, the DJ fortunately informed it was a Donovan (Leach) tune. Anyone remember this tune? It's not on my Donovan's greatest hits CD. I was able to download, and am listening to it now--pretty neat tune. Reminds me of the Grand Funk tune, Closer to Home.

I've got several Donovan LP's but not this one.. another to look for.

I do have his 2LP box set, the very first box set ever in the rock and roll genre

You bet. It's on Sunshine Superman, for one. Lots of Donovan in this house. LPs & CDs. Season Of The Witch is great too, played by many including Bloomfield-Kooper-Stills, Vanilla Fudge, and others.

I liked it fine in '69. According to Wikipedia, McCartney played tambourine and sang backing vocals on it, which I did not know. It also bears no resemblance to any GFR song, IMO.

**edit- and according to allmusic it appeared on the Barabajagal album (1969), which is the way I remember it. **

Thanks guys. I remember hearing that Paul McCartney was in the background vocals on "Mellow Yellow", and that Donovan was one of the folks in the background on the Beatles "All You Need is Love", and the video?

Just wanted to clarify--the repeating nature of the end of the song, reminded me of the GFR song, not the tune or melody. Also, listening to "Season of the Witch", as I'm typing. Getting to be that time of the year. Also remember Season of the Witch playing at the end of the movie "To Die For" with Nicole Kidman.

I have it on a greatest hits CD. Excellent song. "Jennifer Juniper" and "Catch the Wind" are my other Donovan favorites.

"Atlantis" and it's b-side, "To Susan On The West Coast Waiting" (which also charted) have now been included on the reissued Greatest Hits CD. For a better overview of his music, check out the import from Raven Records, "Donovan - Love Is Hot, Truth Is Molten"...which BTW has the original versions of his early hits (The ones on the late 60's Epic hits album were re-recordings).

Great tune. I first heard it off a compilation called Best of 69 I found in a thrift back in the early 80s (I got started on this thrift thing long ago). Always liked it and was pleasantly surprised when it popped up in Goodfellas. I now have a good deal of Donovan's records. Good stuff. Kind of like a British version of mid 60s Dylan.

There's a two cd set out there titled "Troubadour". 44 tracks with all the hits and plenty more. Some of my faves are; Universal Soldier, Musuem, Hurdy Gurdy Man (with the members of Led Zeppelin sans Plant), Maria Magenta, and Cosmic Wheels. Good stuff.

Went to a Donovan concert in Toronto once, '69 or '70 (who could remember?).

Wound up speaking in a soft voice for days afterwards.

Wonderful, gentle singer; a tiny man as I recall. Very stoned audience. They just sat there, for an hour after he stopped.

Kidding about the last one.

Those times are gone now, aren't they? :sadwave:

"Atlantis" was a huge hit here in Europe in my early teens.

I just realized I donīt own anything by Donovan now.:sigh:

I don't have any Donovan CD's or LP's, but I have downloaded a few of his tunes, and his music still sounds great after all these years.

One of my favorites is Hurdy Gurdy Man.

Maybe I should look around for one of his best of CD's.

I love that tune "Israelites" (i don't want to end up like Bonnie & Clyde).

Re: "The Israelites" Desmond, born in Kingston, Jamaica, spelled his last name Dekker, and don't forget his group, The Aces, credited on the Uni single.

Yeah! Pick up that SACD hybrid if you don't have it. Mastered by Steve Hoffman of DCC Gold cd fame.

Yea, Jimmy Page plays lead on Hurdy Gurdy man. George Harrison contributes a verse which Donovan applauds during one of his live compilation CDs. So much good stuff there, even songs entertaining for children. I always got a kick out of that song, "I love my shirt, I love my shirt, it is so fancifully lovely," I think it goes. just light and lovely! Donovans wife, for whom Catch the Wind was penned, was Brian Jones' wife (I think) before he drowned....geeezz, I'm bummin' me out!

I just picked up an original US Epic, yellow label LP of "Babar..." with "Atlantis" on it because of this thread.

"Superlungs" is also quite the groove.

I remember when I was a kid my sister and I had this Mattel guizmo that looked like a small red TV with a 45 player on top. The slides were on strips that advanced along with the recorded story. All I can remember is the Gulliver's Travels story. I also remember having a handful of 45s, one of which was Atlantis that we played and sung along too. The other 45 I remember was the Theme From Hawaii 5-0. Good times.

I have the Epic Legacy series of Donovans Greatest Hits. Remastered with bonus tracks of Atlantis, To Susan On The West Coast Waiting, Barabajagal, and Riki Tiki Tavi.

I'm wondering if the musicians listing is really accurate. They don't mention a keyboard player on Season Of The Witch. It's obvious there are keyboards on this one but no listing of a musician.

Great sounding CD too! I'm going to have to give it another listen on the tube system this week.
