View Full Version : marantz 15 thrift shop find
larry3284 10-06-2008, 07:24 PM  I was at the local thrift shop, nothing new, I almost walked out of the store when I spotted a Marantz 15 in the pricing area, waiting for a price to be put on it. I was lucky enough to buy it {$20}. seems to be in pretty good shape. When I got home [I'm not a tech] it occured to me this amp is about 40 years old.
so the question is do I just go ahead and plug it in or get a tech to check it out first. after all it is 40 years old and I don' have a clue why someone would give it to the salvation army,
I have a few marantz receivers but this is my first Marantz amp
Modegard 10-06-2008, 07:42 PM Nice find. I wouldn't fire it up until it has been checked out. Here is a website that has some good information. I have the Marantz Model 16. Good luck.

Sir.Byrd 10-06-2008, 09:58 PM Wow!
Alex6969 10-07-2008, 12:48 AM Are those "Left" and "Right" stickers factory? They look like cheap add-ins. Awesome score none the less.
larry3284 10-07-2008, 02:59 AM They may be added on by previous owner. their is a small red and blue sticker on the back that looks like factory, but then again this is the first 15 I've ever seen.
HAL9000 10-07-2008, 03:51 AM sorry try again

larry3284 10-07-2008, 06:17 AM you are correct, no fuse holders,I hope they wont be to hard to find. can I use fuse holders from other gear?
Grainger49 10-07-2008, 09:45 AM Where do you guys live that your thrift stores have this stuff?????
My head is going to explode. I couldn't even find a table to put my RCM on at the local GW.

Really great score man. That 15 looks amazing.
larry3284 10-07-2008, 02:54 PM I took no chances with it and never plugged it in the wall, it is now in the repair shop, they will have a look at it and get back to me. I know these guy and they do really good work, should have it back soon. I'll let you know how it works out.
Marantz7t15 10-08-2008, 09:07 PM I have a model 15 too and I think they were among the best, before marantz began going cheap! Hey, Does anyone know where to get the green lamps at? One of mine is burnt out.
Marantz7t15 10-08-2008, 09:16 PM you are correct, no fuse holders,I hope they wont be to hard to find. can I use fuse holders from other gear?
If no, let me know. I have an extensive model 15 bone yard! You are gonna love yours. I was being modest. Truth is, I think the 15 is the best! Not much power but what the hell.
Marantz7t15 10-08-2008, 09:21 PM The large screw a few inches above the power cords can be removed to access your DC offset control. In my owners and service manuals, it states to insert a screw driver and adjust one way or the other until just one red light begins to lite up, then turn the other way until the other lite begins to shimmer. correct DC offset is in between these 2 points. You off course need a dummy load. Let me know if you need any info from my manuals.
larry3284 10-08-2008, 11:08 PM Thanks for the advice, I'm glad to hear how much you enjoy your 15. mine is now in the shop and I should hear something from them in the next few weeks. I hope it only needs a cleaning and adjustments. I'll let you know.
I like the wood on yours, very nice
Arkay 10-09-2008, 01:43 AM Very nice catch! :thmbsp: :music:
I know someone who has HALF of one of those for sale: just one channel, minus the faceplate. [For anyone who doesn't know, these things are actually two independent mono-block units simply bolted together behind a single faceplate.] It's been sitting there for at least a year or so (I posted about it when I first saw it). I've thought repeatedly about getting it, but I don't know if I could ever find the missing half, or a faceplate for it.
:scratch2: Maybe I could make a custom half-sized faceplate and make it into a mono system? Amp for just the center channel in an HT system? sigh...
Virmagicus 10-09-2008, 12:49 PM Very nice steal ! You will love it. The last one I had was split & I sold it on the bay about a year or so ago, no faceplate..
Marantz7t15 10-09-2008, 08:53 PM I don't know why it looks scratched, but the 7t and 15 in the cabinet are literally mint. Of course I paid more than $20! I had a marantz 2325 and a 170 dc. I also still have a marantz 2275. All are/ were excellent, but the 15 somehow sounds warmer, and the build quality is more refined and stout. Look at how much heat sink there is for only 60 watts! Also, check out the massive zener diodes! Can't beat them older USA marantz'
spaceman 10-10-2008, 06:25 PM Nice score, congrats! :thmbsp: I have a 15 too, but it cost about 10x what yours did, lol. It might not be tubed, but it's definitely still good.
