I thought I was a reasonably intelligent person. Then I got a reel to reel deck, a TEAC A4010SL. :stupid:

Figured out (with liberal use of the forum search) how to change the belts, lube the motor, free up the pinch roller linkage and re-attach the brake felt.

But I can't for the life of me figure out how to record. The record mode buttons are there, but no record button. :headscrat Please feel free to laugh hysterically before telling me that I'm a dumbass.

I had a RTR a long time ago and I think I had to hit the play lever and push the record button at the same time.

Sounds reasonable...but there's no record button.

You have to select the record mode buttons on the right lower hand side of the deck to enable record. I am not 100% sure if you have to hit play at the same time, but you have to engage the record mode first. You can select either L or R independantly. I hope I have the right deck!

I found an image of the beast in question (I don't have a R2R unit right now). From looking at the (beautiful) rig, it seems to me that you press and hold the R or L (or both) MODE buttons while hitting the PLAY button to engage the record amps.

Thanks vincei and able. Y'all were absolutely right.

I had tried it earlier to no avail. Then I pulled the amp section and cleaned the record mode switches but didn't try it again.

That's why I loves me some AK, I ponder for a couple hours...then get the answer in 20 minutes.
