View Full Version : Need new tapes for my TEAC A6300
paulram 10-06-2008, 10:17 PM It seems my collection of recordings (Ampex 456)that I did over 15+ years ago are shedding their backing on the guides as they play/rewind. My machine bogs down at times also, especially during rewind/fast forward.. Where can I get new tapes and I dont mean New Old Stock (NOS). Are they still being made ?
vincei 10-06-2008, 10:28 PM Tape is still available and I'm sure others will direct you to where you can get it. I once had to cut the tape off a reel because it was so stuck together. I had baked it a year ago and it seemed to make the stickyness worst a year later. I did get one good transfer out of it though at the time. Good luck!

I've never bought anything from them, but have heard/seen them mentioned as a source for new tape.
paulram 10-06-2008, 10:35 PM Thanks guys!!!!
yesterday, i found a bunch of radio shack brand r2r tapes i had copied lps to 30+ years ago. after playing 2 of them last nite, i also had a wicked gooey oxide mess to clean off from the heads and guides.
they and the rest of the RS brand tapes are now in the trash altho i think i'll try to salvage the 7" reels they came on as they are expensive to buy nowadays.
luckily, my new degausser came today and i also bought some 91% isop. alchy to replace the 70% alchy i had been using. i then degaussed and cleaned all my recorders heads and tape paths.
my akai gx630dss R2R has so much more clarity after the degaussing. it had also been in storage for 17 years and needed it.
WOW!!
as far as tapes, i'm now into buying prerecorded tapes off of ebay for playback only. no more recording for me.
and i'll keep the degausser and alchy near at hand for those old tapes!:music:
paulram 10-06-2008, 10:48 PM hello Jayk...I made some recordings 15+ years ago and tried playing one last night ..in fact I tried FF/RW fist and my machine bogged down at times due to the drag created from the crud build up on the guides.. I wouldnt mind a new tape just so I could record something and enjoy my machine a while yet !

yep. i got the drag also. i kept thinking the motors were wearing out. this was before i realized that all the crud was on everything and slowing everything down.
i guess us recording is one of the few places to get new blank tape anymore.
also check out malelo and company. thats all i got, they're in chicago.
paulram 10-06-2008, 11:04 PM Yeah..I went there (USRECORDING) It seems so..Ive been out of touch ..cant believe how expensive these tapes are and the thing is I have some NOS ampex 456s and I am hesitant to use them for the same crud reason...I too thought that something was wrong with my motors till I tried one of these NOS tapes with a bit better rewind speed !!!
wordman001 10-07-2008, 06:44 AM The problem is not present in used Maxell. I don't care how old it is.
mfhale 10-07-2008, 08:28 AM IIRC, acetate tapes are more prone to shedding than polyester, but I could be mistaken. I just got my first R2R deck and it came with a bunch of used Scotch tapes. Haven't had any real shedding issues with them. I've read that 'baking' old tapes is useful for one good play if you are trying to archive previously recorded material. As I understand it, baking is not a permanent solution.

i, for one, am glad to hear that cuz i gotta bunch of old, some unused, maxell
ud?35 reels, most 7", a few 10".:thmbsp:
paulram 10-07-2008, 12:01 PM Wordman001...you are so correct..I just pulled one of my maxell ud 35-180 1.0 ml polyester base 3600 ft..and the thing plays WELL. I picked these up used a while back ..in fact there is a date on the box dated Sept 3 1980 by the supposedly original owner!!!! Thats at least 28 years ago !!!!! Man o man!!!..this is encouraging!!!..thanks all
paulram 10-07-2008, 12:05 PM Today I removed the pincher roller and cleaned the shaft. ..now the roller itself is a Sleeved brass looking bearing and the shaft looks stainless steelish. Am I suppose to lube the shaft? With what?...I tend to think not..any ideas?
paulram 10-07-2008, 12:14 PM oops I wanted this to be a new post

There is a seller on eBay (http://stores.ebay.com/BroadcastElecs-Store) selling the EMTEC tape also. However the shipping rates seem a bit higher. I checked same product at USRecording and the eBay seller. Same product price, different shipping price. USRecording has their checkout setup to charge by destination from Kresgeville, PA, the eBay seller is setup to charge by destination from Baldwin, New York.
