JDaniel 05-19-2004, 02:42 PM Seems like this is becoming a weekly thread. I've got to put a stop to this. Who's responsible for this free-spending??? Oh, yeah, it's me!
Perusing the used bins, I picked up the following:
Bruce Springsteen - Greatest Hits (why? because it was cheap. I have all the source albums on this one, so I probably should have passed, but such is life).
Johnny Winter - Nothin' But The Blues
Ani Defranco & Utah Phillips - Fellow Workers (know nothing about this one, but took a chance)
Beat The Retreat - Songs by Richard Thompson. All RT tunes performed by the likes of R.E.M., Bonnie Raitt, Syd Straw, Los Lobos, Graham Parker, David Byrne, Shawn Colvin, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Anybody familiar with these last two? I'll post some comments when I get a chance to listen.

Actually, I've heard a couple of cuts from the diFranco/Phillips cd and liked them, even not really being familiar with her. Utah Phillips is an old-school union organizer in the same vein as Pete Seeger (in his early days) and hobo in the original sense of the word. Grizzled ole fart forever rattling the capitalist establishment- never gained much of a wide-spread audience over the million years he's been around, mainly due to his politics. Last I read a year or so ago, he was still kicking, but in failing health.
Wornears 05-19-2004, 04:20 PM Very familiar with it. Bought it new in LA about '97. Getting a bit harder to find now. This is collection of songs of Richard Thompson interpreted by the bands. The Blind Boys of Alabama's version of Dimming of The Day is amazing.
Other standouts are Los Lobos, REM, and Syd Straw. Excellent musicanship all around -- not your typical "let's all sing Band X's songs" -- you understand just how magnificient Thompson's songwriting can be by these versions.

Yes *Weak* is spelled right. All the new releases, with their marked down stickers and their spines staring at me,just waiting to be bent.Fresh cellophane to be opened like a virgin, full of promise yet tentativeat the first touch of the laser.

My mailbox had two new thangs waiting for me this afternoon, so I be WAY happy- Elliot Murphy & Iain Matthews, La Terre Commune, and Vetiver, S/T, both of which I am really looking forward to spinning 2night.

I'm terrible at categorizing, but I think psych-folk. Rather than being creative, here's my brief blurb from another site earlier this week:
"Devendra Banhart, Rejoicing In The Hands- Yes, it is that good and more. My favorite 2004 release to date. Strange, innocent folky songs that don't necessarily sound like they're from another time so much as from another dimension. Banhart's highly mannered vocal style may be an acquired taste for some. Somewhere down the road of a hybrid Nick Drake/trippy-era Donovan with an occasional dash of Tiny Tim. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
The Pitchfork review here: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/b/banhart_devendra/rejoicing-in-the-hands.shtml
is much more eloquent in its assessment than I am, though. I'm very impressed with this record.
