View Full Version : Sansui G-9000/G-901/G-9000DB
Soundcraftsmn 10-21-2008, 09:08 AM With prices somewhat depressed right now, I'm considering stepping up to a big G, however I'm not sure what the differences are between the G-9000 and G-9000DB. I presume the G 901 is a home market version of the G-9000? Should I even consider the G-9700?
Which is top dog(not counting the G22/33) and why? Thanks.
MAXZ28 10-21-2008, 09:15 AM G-9000 / G-9000DB - bright silver finish faceplate; DB dolby circuitry
G-901 - grey or gunmetal finish faceplate
The G-9700 is the series that came after the G-9000 - has the digital tuner display and LED power indicators. Build quality not as robust as the G-9000 but it's still a very potent Sansui.
I'd say you couldn't really go wrong with any of them. If I had to pick, it would be a G-9000 or G-9000DB but I'm a bit biased. How can you not like this? :D

Soundcraftsmn 10-21-2008, 11:10 PM Max, nice pic to tease me with! I'm already in, just not sure for a 9000 or 900DB. Is the only difference onboard Dolby? Are the values comparable? Any drawbacks to one or the other?
EchoWars 10-22-2008, 12:47 AM The Dolby circuitry is pretty useless now.
Soundcraftsmn 10-22-2008, 10:33 AM Do the G-9000DB's have Dolby board issues like the 9090DB? If not, than I guess there is no real difference, I should go for the best condition/price.
Thanks for the info. Are there any other things to watch for on this series?
MAXZ28 10-22-2008, 10:49 AM Seems to me that the DB variants sell a little higher than the regular G9K's. There's a few listed right now that you should keep an eye on being you're in CA. Actually there's a few AKers out your way that might be able to help find you a Sansui BIG G. Check out the Sansui forum and CA AK members.
The BIG G's are notorious for dirty pots and switches which can cause intermittent channels - you can usually pick these problem receivers up considerably cheaper and remedy their woes with a thorough deoxit bath followed by some Faderlube. I picked up a few G-8000's listed as one channel bad pretty cheap and their issue was simply contact oxidization that needed attention. I'm not insinuating that you'll have the same luck, but there's a high probability that BIG G 'Sui's having intermittent channels just need a good cleaning.
Good luck hunting and have patience. You'll find one eventually. It took me a while, myself as I found mine last April but here's the good news - it's a buyer's market right now as it seems the prices are being affected by reluctant spenders.

The G-9000DB does not have the problems like the X0X0DB series. The Dolby circuit in the G-9KDB is only for FM, it cannot encode or decode dolby tapes and such. The G-9K has an FM de-emphasis circuit (kinda a poor mans dolby decoder). Neither are of any use anymore as no one broadcasts dolby FM anymore.
LBPete 10-24-2008, 12:24 AM Sounds like you need one of each.

xoaphexox 10-24-2008, 06:48 AM I have always preferred the gunmetal gray faceplate of the G-901 but you don't see them come up too often. When they do, they fetch as much as the DB variant because of rarity.
Just wait until you find any one of the 9000's in as good cosmetic condition as you can and go for it! If anything is wrong internally it will be easier to sort out than trying to fix a "cosmetically challenged unit".
I've had a G-9000DB for a few years now and can openly say that I've never had occasion to engage the DB circuit.
I wouldn't be afraid of it in terms of reliability, but it is pretty useless in terms of application.

Hey MaxZ28, or anyone !
I am curious what you think about the G-8700db in comparison to the
G-9000db as far as build quality , functions and sound.
Thanks, Don
kmill99 12-24-2008, 03:04 PM I have had a G-9000db for some time now, and it's one of my favorites.
