View Full Version : How many cartridges do you own?

Not junkers, but ones that are in good working condition! If you have several, please list them in your order of preference. I have a few, as I had a minor cartridge fascination a couple of years ago, so I will go first.

1) Denon 103R
2) Denon 110
3) Goldring 1042
4) AT 440MLa
5) Shure III with NOS VN35E stylus

I have never owned anything exotic as all of the above have had their time as the flavor of the day on audio sites and the hype intrigued me enough to give them a try. On my system, to my ears, this is the order in which they fall.

I only have one, the AT440MLa. I'd like to get another one, but I'm not sure what would make sense. I'd like something that will track just as well, but maybe offer a different "color." I also don't want to spend more than $100.

Mounted on Thorens 124 boards:
1)Sumiko BP#2 (mounted on SME3009-II)
2)Ortofon SPU-GTE (mounted on Ortofon RS-212)
3)Grado Gold (mounted on Grado Laboratory walnut arm)
4)Shure M3d (mounted on Rek-O-Kut 120S)

In boxes for revolving use:

1)Pickering V15-II
2)Pickering XV-15
3)Shure M7d (x2)
4)Shure M7/N21
5)Ortofon OM-10
6)Shure N72b
7)audio tech at70L
8)Stanton V500.3
9)Stanton V500
10)Shure V15-III
11)Empire 1000
12)Sumiko Pearl

Several I got with tables, some I got in junk boxes and found new styli. The ones mounted on arms are in regular use, but each has their own sound...it's like trying to pick a favorite child...even though you love them all, some you just get along with better.

Hmmmm, let's see...

2x ADC
6x Audio Technica
3x Bang & Olufsen
4x Nagaoka
4x Ortofon
~ 12x Philips
2 1/2x Shure
1x Stanton
1x Technics

That makes ca. 35 1/2 altogether. Plus a couple more needles for more combinations...

Greetings from Munich!

Manfred / lini

P.S.: Oops, overlooked the wish for "in order of preference". But I would have had to be more specific then, anyway - plus my order of preference also varies with the turntable. But to name some of my favs nevertheless: B&O MMC20EN, Philips GP351, Audio Technica AT120 body with ATN150E needle and AT432EP/OCC body with ATN152LP needle.

Just one: Shure V15 RS that's several years old, but never used until the parents gave me their PL-730. I wouldn't mind trying a Shibata stylus on it if available, but I think with how I'm on a beer budget, this is about as good as it'll get for me without putting myself out of the house I'm currently in.

In order of my personal preference thus far:

ATN95HE in AT3400
Pickering XV-15/625e
Shure M95HE (still breaking in so it may move up)
Shure M97xE
Grado Green
Pioneer PC3MC (considering upgrade to PN401MC from TurntableNeedles when budget supports it)
Shure RXP3 (need to hear more of this so it may move up as well)

Except for the PC3MC, which came as original equipment on my PL-9, and the M97xe which I picked up on line, the carts came with t/t's picked up through C/L or E***. Replacement styli for all came from either JICO (directly) or LPGear.

So beej, your saying the V15 RS cart I've got's definitely better than the PC-3MC my 730 probably originally came with?

I really don't know.
2 X Grace F-9
Ortofon X5-MC
Shure V-15 II, III and IV
Shure M97he
Audio Technica AT ML150OCC

There are others, but those above are the ones that come to mind.

So beej, your saying the V15 RS cart I've got's definitely better than the PC-3MC my 730 probably originally came with?

Since I don't own the V15 I really can't say. I will say this: the PC-3MC is a nice moving coil cart however the stylus is a .5 mil spherical. Compared to a moving magnet cart with an eliptical or hyper-eliptical stylus, the MM's I've listed sound better to me. The reason that I want to upgrade the stylus in the PC3MC is to experience the sound with an eliptical installed.

All of that being said, most in here will tell you: it's how it sounds to you that counts.

All working cartridges, some with spare oem stylus. In no particular order although the TOP 2 right now would be the Grado Gold and Denon DL-110, after that I have a problem picking.

Micro Acoustics 3002
Sumiko Blue point
Sumiko Oyster
Goldring 1012GX
Goldring Elektra
Ortofon OM20
Ortofon OM5e
ADC XLM mkII
ADC XLM mkIII Improved

Pickering XSV 3000 (now needs new stylus)
Audio Technica 130e

Edit
Have been listening a lot more to the ADC XLM MkII improved with Original NOS from LPgear. That and the Grado Gold get the most play time.

Broc, you definitely need more carts. :D

I been thinking that too

But, first I want a receiver with a better phono section AND switchable capacitive loading. I could get external phono amp, but I still want the ability to vary the cap loading. Either of these comes along before any more serious carts :scratch2:

And now I do as of late 2009. I have the phono running through the completely gone through and recapped phono section of a Pioneer SA-8800 integrated amplifier with both cap and resistive loading. It's a keeper. I'm sure I could better the phono stage here for maybe a $1K. But that kind of money needs to go to helping the folks. It'll have to wait which ain't bad as it gives me time to figure out which one :)

okay, so I'm curious . . . how many turntables do you guys have out and playable at a given time? I can see swinging two in my office, and one in the guest room, but I would have a difficult, if not impossible time, convincing my wife we needed one out in the living room. And if I did, it would probably have to seem like it's not really there . . . . . . .

The ones that have good stylii:

Pickering XL-28U (with DTL-2 stylus)
Pickering TLE
Stanton L720
Grado Silver
Shure MP94E (x2, one with a N104E stylus)
Shure MP92E
Ortofon X1-MCP
Ortofon TM14 (with a 10 stylus)
Digitrac 200NE (x3)
Audio-technica SLT88E with ATN102EP stylus (x2)
Audio-technica LS580/LT with ATN122LP stylus
Audio-technica TR485U with ATN152LP stylus
Audio-technica AT211EP
Audio-technica DR400E

Without stylii, there's another Ortofon TM and a AT92E (purchased because it was the cheapest way to get a new stylus for the DR400E).

Oddly enough, I've been looking at Technics and Sumiko p-mounts on eBay.

I have only two

AT 120 E/T
Stanton 500

Since I only have one TT, the AT is presently in use.

Only ONE TT ?? You need another for that other cart.:D:thmbsp:

okay, so I'm curious . . . how many turntables do you guys have out and playable at a given time? I can see swinging two in my office, and one in the guest room, but I would have a difficult, if not impossible time, convincing my wife we needed one out in the living room. And if I did, it would probably have to seem like it's not really there . . . . . . .

I have two in use at present, PL-L1000 and DP-EC-20. The 3rd and 4th are in reserve, and will be rotated soon.
It's easier to have the carts setup for the TT then constantly readjusting when i wasnt to listen to a different cart.

The TT's are all full-auto, and in use, they satisfy my fascination for fine mechanics

Technics SP-15 with Stanton 500 & 6 different stylii (78rpm playback)
JVC QL-A7 with Grado ME+ (mono LP/45)

Of the four listed, three are set up & working, in systems that I use regularly.

The 4th is a new acquisition and will either be sold on after I get done checking it out, or will replace one of the other two at some point (the PS-LX520 is part of my Sony ES DST system, and these other Sony TT's don't integrate well with the DST preamp or fit the rack so it isn't going anywhere even though it's the cheapest model of the bunch). If that happens the leftover TT will be sold. I don't like to have turntables stacked up and not in use at all.

2 Sumiko P-76's (one for main and one for backup)
1 Audio Technica CN5625AL (wired for Mono use)

The only area I see changing is getting a better cart for mono (looking like a DL-102 sometime soon) and possibly a better Grado down the road a ways.

Something tells me most people that have alot use arms with detachable head shells. Then again they don't take up much closet space. In retrospect I should have kept all I ever owned. Currently have 3, Rega exact, Grado Silver1, and Ortofon 2M Red.

Same # as TT's. They are the 3 listed in my sig line. Will definitely consider at least 3 more carts for the 3 aftermarket headshells i recently bought for quick swaps on my JVC in the near future as funds become avail. I need to finish the payments on THE FISHER 800C i'm buying locally first.

Not junkers, but ones that are in good working condition!

Well, my one cartridge in good working order might also be considered a junker. I currently have an Audio Technica CN5625AL cartridge on my LP12/Ittok setup. One of the things I've long enjoyed about the LP12 and Ittok (or even the Basik Plus arm I started with) is that it makes almost any cartridge sound good, including this $39 model.

I don't normally have multiple cartridges in good working order lying around for two main reasons:

1. Changing cartridges on the Ittok is a pain. To increase rigidity and avoid information loss, there is no removeable headshell or arm wand, and the arm has to be completely removed from the turntable before tightening the cartridge mounting bolts; this is to avoid damage to the arm bearings. The arm may go on and off the 'table multiple times as one is dialing-in overhang and offset angle. As a consequence, I tend to set up a cartridge and leave it there for 10 to 12 months, then have the stylus examined for wear.

2. The rubber suspension bits harden over time even when not used. Since I don't usually change cartridges more than once a year, it makes no sense to have good cartridges sitting around deteriorating when they're not in use. When I need a replacement stylus or cartridge, I buy a nice, new, factory-fresh sample that will work as designed with no age-related factors to reduce its performance.

lini

(...) a junker. (...)

I'd rather call it a cheapie - as "junker" would rather imply bad quality, but even AT's low budget carts usually are pretty good (unless one happens to get a badly made exemplar that slipped through quality control - but that can happen with more expensive carts, too...).

Greetings from Munich!
