View Full Version : You've got to see this TT.Words can't explain it.
theophile 10-27-2008, 05:58 PM I saw this on Audio Asylum. It's either genius,or it's the work of an obsessive compulsive type(I'm not knocking-it until I hear it).
I'd hate to lose a vital piece,though......
Snade 10-27-2008, 06:00 PM Looks like one of those lottery contraptions that select the lotto numbers.
Dustin 10-27-2008, 06:03 PM That is beyond belief. Must be fun fishing the vinyl out to flip it over.
meggy 10-27-2008, 06:04 PM Looks like one of those lottery contraptions that select the lotto numbers.
Or the kids game "MouseTrap". Looks like a lot can go wrong there. Who knows, maybe it sounds fantastic.
modge 10-27-2008, 06:05 PM Whats the hypodermic needle for, a quik fix :D
2DualsNotEnough 10-27-2008, 06:08 PM New for 2008-The Hasbro Astrolite Turntable!

theophile 10-27-2008, 06:16 PM Oops, dropped a screw...
Cool photo, but I prefer simplicity.
Wajobu,
I agree.
It makes my GT 2000 look like 'plug and play'(which it is,by the way).
I'll stick with what I've got.
onepixel 10-27-2008, 06:17 PM It looks like it could pop popcorn and refine plutonium at the same time.
Sir.Byrd 10-27-2008, 06:27 PM In my opinion the plastic looks terrible.
Now if that was wood...
Whats the hypodermic needle for, a quik fix :D
I believe that's to inject the perfect amount of foam for the capuccino.
scottrt 10-27-2008, 07:13 PM I bet it's real fun to keep the dust off. If I had to guess about how it sounded.... average.
Scott
RichPA 10-27-2008, 07:16 PM I always liked Rube Goldberg.
flat_spin 10-27-2008, 07:23 PM Yeah, I used to have one of those, but it won't work unless you can get 1.21 jiggawatts directly into the flux capacitor...
caddisgeek 10-27-2008, 07:30 PM dammit, I was just about ot say something about the flux capacitor
so whats the make and model?
Trance88 10-27-2008, 07:36 PM Where the hell does the record go on that contraption???:yikes::screwy:
slow_jazz 10-27-2008, 08:04 PM I can't imagine how that thing works...
Fast_Eddie 10-27-2008, 08:05 PM It's a Rube Goldburg turntable. It makes eggs for you in the morning too.
Fast_Eddie 10-27-2008, 08:05 PM I always liked Rube Goldberg.
Crap, you beat me to it.
circlesky73 10-27-2008, 08:20 PM I'll betcha it vibrates like Jenna Jameson.

circlesky73 10-27-2008, 09:14 PM "...and a wind shield to prevent airflow disturbing the platter rotation."
OMG- is this something I should be paranoid about??? :sigh:
ehoove 10-27-2008, 09:42 PM It would be interesting to hear, for the sound presentation is what a turntable is graded on, not the visual one!
Regards,
Jim
Clmrt 10-27-2008, 09:45 PM It'd be funny to tell the guy he's gotta move it because they're coming to clean the carpet.
caddisgeek 10-27-2008, 10:01 PM Whats the hypodermic needle for, a quik fix :D
The tonearm floats on water, the hypodermic is to adjust VTA, dot you know anything about rekkid players? :D
whell 10-27-2008, 10:36 PM The term "over-engineered" comes to mind...
KoolKarma 10-27-2008, 10:40 PM what theee wheres the speakers how wait what whoo
clydeselsor 10-27-2008, 10:43 PM "...and a wind shield to prevent airflow disturbing the platter rotation."
OMG- is this something I should be paranoid about??? :sigh:
:lmao:
Patriot1776 10-27-2008, 10:50 PM All it needs is a vacuum system, and now Space Shuttle astronauts can listen to vinyl during trips to the International Space Station. Or rather, they haul it up to the ISS, leave it, and now the Space Station astronauts can listen to vinyl all they want.
melofelo 10-27-2008, 10:52 PM i bet it runs 0.01% fast...:D
Arkay 10-27-2008, 11:30 PM That baasner turntable employs some interesting ideas, but I have a few doubts about it.
First off is the rampant use (over-use?) of plexiglass/acrylic material. Yes, it is somewhat sonically inert, but I think the main reason people are using it these days is NOT actually because of its sonic characteristics.
It is not so expensive, relatively soft and easy to work with, and okay sonically, so for manufacturers looking for an acceptable material that lowers costs, it is a good compromise. But if you are going to put in all that work and even include things like an air baffle to prevent "wind effects" and are trying to achieve REAL PRECISION, then a cast alloy would be much better. A good zinc alloy with a percentage of lead in it would be sonically inert enough for most of the construction, but much more stable and precise than a plastic. Of course, more difficult to work with. Can you imagine, say, a Studer/Revox taoe deck maintaining its precision if it were made with an acrylic frame instead of a cast alloy one? There are places for it to be used, but to use it as THE MAIN construction material for the frame, as has been done here, is NOT ideal. Even the higher-end exotic turntables that use it for platters or elsewhere, do not use it this way.
The drive on that TT uses a complex thread drive with multiple pulleys. While that may isolate the motor from the platter, it also introduces more possible sources of speed deviation through "slip", and perhaps noise. There is no need for that complexity: K.I.S.S., unless there is real justification for complexity (which I don't see in this instance).
I've thought about water as an arm support material before, but there are issues that make it problematic. Yes, it supports and dampens, but there are also problems with wave propagation in water that I'm not sure could be overcome. I'd like to see a lot more detail of how that arm was constructed, before I'd accept it as superior to air-bearing. Waves in air are not a practical concern as long as turbulence is controlled, which is why the current TOTL turntables use air-bearing arms.
Still, there appear to be some interesting things going on with that TT. I'd like to hear it, to experience what the results are like. Probably quite good, but I do think if you are going to put that kind of work into a TT, it could be done better (a la TOTL Rockports). I suspect the show chose to feature that particular DIY table as much because of its rather extreme appearance, as because of performance.

Impedance 10-27-2008, 11:43 PM Looks like something the little construction-worker muppets were building in Fraggle Rock.
I still don't like it.
Metalownz 10-28-2008, 12:13 AM It actually looks like it belongs in a chem lab. And its probably the ugliest turntable ive ever seen on Audiokarma. lol
beans 10-28-2008, 12:36 AM Whats the hypodermic needle for, a quik fix :D
Don't try working it if you're on the hard stuff.
Splatter Pak 10-28-2008, 07:17 AM I would not buy that thing, even if I could afford it, just because I don't like to dust.
Redboy 10-28-2008, 07:19 AM It's ridonculous.
nakmandan 10-28-2008, 08:36 AM Finally! That's exactly what I've been looking for to play all of my thrift store vinyl. The search is over!:D
similost 10-28-2008, 08:52 AM ....because they can...
merrylander 10-28-2008, 09:39 AM The designer' s name is Rube Goldberg.
www.records 10-28-2008, 10:16 AM I wonder if the designer liked to tinker?
Brett a 10-28-2008, 10:29 AM It looks like something a robot threw up after a vodka binge. :drunk:
:puke:
theophile 10-28-2008, 12:22 PM It actually looks like it belongs in a chem lab. And its probably the ugliest turntable ive ever seen on Audiokarma. lol
I agree.
It's probably a good picture to show a 'Significant Other',when they complain about how dork-y your turntable is.
"Hey! do you want to see a really dork-y 'table?I'M THINKING OF GETTING ONE!Or do you think I should stick with the one I've got?" :scratch2: :nono:
I enjoyed posting this thread, just to giggle at the comments.
It's such an UGLY turntable.I'd pray it sounded good, just so that the pain which must accompany having to use this thing justifies it's existence.
virak 10-28-2008, 12:56 PM Looks like something the little construction-worker muppets were building in Fraggle Rock.
I still don't like it.
That was the first thought that popped into my head. "It's built by dozers!"
shocley 10-28-2008, 01:23 PM Model Shop Mania!!!
Tiver 10-28-2008, 01:41 PM My ignorance prevents me from understanding what possible vinyl source could live up to the expectations one would have from such an investment.
Patriot1776 10-28-2008, 01:46 PM It actually looks like it belongs in a chem lab. And its probably the ugliest turntable ive ever seen on Audiokarma. lol
A chem lab full of the deadliest and most toxic chemicals known to man! One that requires you to be in full chemical suits even if you're outside of it! One where you can just feel the evil coming off the toxic chemicals within! :lmao:
Alex6969 10-28-2008, 01:56 PM Wow.:puke2:
beans 10-28-2008, 01:58 PM I always liked Rube Goldberg.
Ha! I just heard about him for the first time the other day... this is the 1st time I can remember a reference to him.
Holst 10-28-2008, 02:23 PM I want it!!!!!
iLUVanalog 10-28-2008, 03:19 PM I saw this on Audio Asylum. It's either genius,or it's the work of an obsessive compulsive type(I'm not knocking-it until I hear it).

not the prettiest turntable i've ever seen, but i'm sure it does what it's supposed to do EXTREMELY WELL!!
(...) but i'm sure it does what it's supposed to do EXTREMELY WELL!!
Yeah, but what is it actually supposed to do? Confuse a cat? Distract a bee? Amaze a vole? Puzzle a puma? ;)
Grinnings from Munich!
Manfred / lini
P.S.: "Words can't explain it." Hmmm - how about "humungous contraption"? Gargantuan gizmo?
Fast_Eddie 10-28-2008, 04:40 PM Huh. Curious.
I wonder why you guys don't think it would sound good.
I'm not one to say you have to hear it to know- for instance, if I build a cabinet for a 2" speaker from a transistor radio and rave that it's the best speaker system ever, none of you need to hear it to know I'm full of it. But that's based on putting various pieces of information to create a new piece of information. The basis for human thinking.
But what would you base this on? What about this TT makes you think it wouldn't sound good? I don't know that it would sound better than a more conventional TT, but I bet with a great cart and clean vinyl it sounds very good.
Take care,
Ed
OneMalt 10-28-2008, 05:19 PM I think it's the world's only existing picture of the infamous Lirpa Labs Steamtable.
chadnliz 10-28-2008, 06:17 PM Wow this is a goofy bunch here, you guys all line up in aww if somebody pulls a $10 hunk of crap from a dumpster and are pretty negative about truely interesting gear.
caddisgeek 10-28-2008, 06:30 PM Wow this is a goofy bunch here, you guys all line up in aww if somebody pulls a $10 hunk of crap from a dumpster and are pretty negative about truely interesting gear.
That's funny coz it true
back to the dumpster!
Metalownz 10-28-2008, 11:39 PM I agree.

Well then remind me to show that to my girlfriend ha ha. She just loves my addiction when it comes to audio equipment. I tell her though, there are people worse than me, trust me.
As for that turntable, too much was put into that thing, and if it breaks, how the heck do you figure out whats wrong with it?? lol
Metalownz 10-28-2008, 11:39 PM Wow this is a goofy bunch here, you guys all line up in aww if somebody pulls a $10 hunk of crap from a dumpster and are pretty negative about truely interesting gear.
So true, lol.

Now thats using your imagination! lol
We should write a story about a turntable that comes to life and eats people, and use that turntable as the monster. It would work. lol
Puma Cat 10-29-2008, 01:12 AM Man, that thing is uglier than a 2001 Suzuki Katana 600!
(and more complicated, too, I'll bet..)
Sticking to my Rega...
avionic 10-29-2008, 01:18 AM In my opinion the plastic looks terrible.
Now if that was wood...
Wood is easy to work with...Acrylic is a wee bit more challenging..
musicgioni 11-02-2008, 10:28 AM I gopt a head ache just looking at it! What the HECK... were they thinking? Anyway I find it ridiculously complicated. Imagine that they have to use panels to protect the "water floating" arm from AIR MOVEMENT!!! Even breathing near it could mess up the settings...
I do not even like the looks of it and I do like TTs like the Spotheim LaLuz (I hope I spelled this right) or similar Acryllic TTs even just to look at them. I am more of a WOOD TT guy!
Anyway I will stay with my Sota Cosmos and my super fun to use Sony PS-X600!
BrocLuno 11-02-2008, 10:39 AM I think it's a Monsanto sales gimmick and promo item ??
dread31 11-02-2008, 10:46 AM Someone has an acrylic fetish.
What's with the acrylic shields everywhere?
