I have a chance to buy a Shelter 5000 with very few hours on it for $750. Has anyone had any experience with this cartridge? It'll be used on a VPI Scout.

Shelter makes cartridges that I will consider alongside with Benz, Lyra, Koetsu and Audio Note when I am to change my Benz L2 one day. "dolph" iLUVanalog 10-28-2008, 03:23 PM i would partially agree with niklas that the shelters are comparatively good with some of the benz micro's, but i have to say nowhere near the performance of the upper range lyra's, any of the koetsu's, and can't touch the audio notes. niklasthedol 10-28-2008, 05:07 PM i would partially agree with niklas that the shelters are comparatively good with some of the benz micro's, but i have to say nowhere near the performance of the upper range lyra's, any of the koetsu's, and can't touch the audio notes. I do not agree. For sure not. How can you compare these product in a reasonable context unless you have upper class sounding gear? How is the Shelter 5000? I really don't care about upper range Lyra's or Koetsu's.:bat: niklasthedol 10-28-2008, 06:47 PM How is the Shelter 5000? "dolph" Something in the same price range. niklasthedol 10-28-2008, 07:16 PM Something in the same price range. Sorry. That is not an answer making it possible to help you. "dolph" Mr. Lin 10-28-2008, 07:34 PM The answer would probably be "almost certainly very good." nu2toobs 10-28-2008, 07:45 PM The answer would probably be "almost certainly very good." Thanks Mr. Lin:dunno: Mr. Lin 10-28-2008, 07:47 PM Thanks Mr. Lin:dunno: Well, I don't know what else to tell you. They're very reputable cartridges, I can't imagine it wouldn't sound great on a VPI. nu2toobs 10-28-2008, 09:58 PM Well, I don't know what else to tell you. Oh the hazards of communicating on online forums. :D iLUVanalog 10-29-2008, 03:59 PM well good grief f**k me for having an opinion!!! nu2toobs 10-29-2008, 06:28 PM Wow, where did that come from? If you read my original post, I asked if anyone had any experience with the Shelter 5000. It went OT immediately. You're entitled to your opinions. I was asking for opinions from owners. It seems like whatever you ask about there's always somebody over there who has some experience with it. Frankly I'm pretty curious about this myself. nu2toobs 10-29-2008, 10:36 PM I think he's referring to dolph's response to his post. Anyway:D, have you posted this question over at the asylum? I would like to help you but before telling you my oppinion, I would like to know what RIAA, what set of amps and what loudspeakers you are going to match it with. I Apologize for any confusion I might have brought to this thread. I have, though, also heard different Koetsu, Lyra, Benz, Audio Note and a lot other cartridges on a vast variety of very well matched systems, which is the reason I declared myself disagreing with "iLUVanalog"'s posting. "dolph" No need to aplogize, here are the specs of my gear. Klipsch Lascala Speakers VRD st45 amp -45 watt Kt88 amp built and sold by NOS Valves I think it's ok to use Shelter 5000 in your set-up. You have a bit to much gain and the impedans is ~ a third of what your step-up requires. But that will do. Maybe you can adjust the impedans yourself externaly. Compliance should go fine with your arm, which I take is the JMW-9 of some kind. Great set-up by the way. I take you have musicality and warmth in your personal sound. You might get use of this (http://www.vinylengine.com/vpi-tonearm-geometry.shtml) for the geometry when changing cartridge. You will not get the sound warmer with the Shelter, although you will experience some bass and dynamics revealing in your sound with the "Shelter change". You will be happy to change from any Denon related cartridge to this Shelter. For sure. Should I suggest any change to homogenize the sound; it would be the RIAA/step-up combo. External active MC RIAA (without step-up needed) could be a solution. Maybe even without tubes. You got the tube amp. Enough is enough. Hybrid matching can realy do magics. This way you could also match the gain and impedans more perfect. Just a tiny comment. Stay happy. "dolph" |
