View Full Version : It's SECRET SANTA time!
luvvinvinyl 11-01-2008, 09:09 AM This is the official sign-up thread for the 2008 AK Secret Santa.
Secret Santa time is here again.
One of Audiokarma’s long-standing traditions is the annual Secret Santa. It is great fun, and a cool way to celebrate the holidays.
You sign up for this event, by posting to THIS THREAD ONLY. This thread will remain open until November 21st, at 9 pm, EST. Please send me an email, with the words SECRET SANTA as the subject, containing your actual name and mailing address and your AK username, to luvvinvinyl@audiokarma.org. After the thread closes, I will send everyone the name and address of their intended recipient.
The limit this year is $35, not including shipping. Please allow enough time for your gift to reach its destination by December 18th. Remember that your Secret Santa gift may have to travel to another country.
Gifts may be audio-related, but need not be so. Half the fun is reading the posts of your recipient, and picking out something special for them.
You can read about past Secret Santas in the threads in this forum. Join us in the AK holiday spirit.
Njord Noatun 11-01-2008, 09:13 AM I'm in - will email you soon with my details.

grumpy 11-01-2008, 09:26 AM All ready ? Time sure flew by this year !
Count me in.
Need to point some thing out to everyone before they add their names to this list.
We do not appreciate harassing people to get them to send out their SS gifts. We at Audiokarma love this annual tradition that Tim started years ago.
It loses a lot if you do not follow through on what you have committed to.
Please make sure you send out your gifts in a timely manor. If you have any doubt in your mind that you will not be able to meet this requirement please do not sign up
Thank you
Grumpy

Do all winter socks sold in Canada run on batteries, or just the top of the line ones?
luvvinvinyl 11-21-2008, 06:51 PM No, the TOTL ones are hand-knit, by industrious women, like my lovely wife.

The postmark was the only thing that gave you away last year. You might try mailing from somewhere else. ;)

beans 11-24-2008, 04:30 PM Here's how you'll know it's me: I'm giving away speakers! That's right... my old Bose model 31's!!! How can I be so generous, you ask? Because the woofers need a foam job, and I'll have to ask that the lucky recipient reimburse me for shipping... hey even I have limits to my generosity :D
Vintageman1 11-24-2008, 04:32 PM Well, seems like you are all having a great time, I still do not have my name and it is driving me nuts. Ernie....hurry, hurry, hurry!
Sluggo 11-24-2008, 04:34 PM "The postmark was the only thing that gave you away last year. You might try mailing from somewhere else"
Now your thinking Ray !
Gonna start my research tonight. This is gonna take a while since the member has well over 1000 posts. I don't think anyone knows my address (except for luvvinvinyl and a few others). :scratch2:
Vintageman1 11-24-2008, 05:30 PM I basically new here, however Ernie knows me. I sold him his first turntable (or at least had a part in it) , a Dual 1218 with a rare aluminum plinth. Told him that it could play upside down and guess what, that was the first thing he did when he got it home.
Hopefully, I do not get his name as I know he will try and do something weird with it.
luvvinvinyl 11-24-2008, 07:36 PM And it did. I hated watching that table land at the bottom of the stairs. It seemed to fall in slow motion. The auto mechanisms didn't mind the fall, but didn't care much care for the sudden stop at the bottom. That was several turntables ago, but, strangely, not that many years ago.
Everybody should have their target name. If you REALLY want to keep your identity secret, use a little creativity, and get the help of one of Santa's elves. You'd be surprised what you can do, if you try.
Ballylongford 11-26-2008, 01:33 AM So it turns out there was an episode on the TV series "HOUSE" where the titular character set up a Secret Santa swap where HE was the recipient of all the gifts......

Ok just read your reply and now understand why I need to ship to the frozen north...
Question does Ernie need a ton of turdilizer and will it hurt to freeze it? Or would it be easier if I drop shipped it fresh?

Probably easier to hire a herd of moose (meeses??) and have them camp out on his front lawn/porch.

I actually just did this for the first time. Its quite easy. You go to the post office, tell them you need to ship to Canada, they give you a form to fill out. You put the addresses on normally, make sure you clearly mark that it is going to Canada though.
Harmonica 11-26-2008, 10:08 PM Oh drat, I missed the deadline by a few days. This looks like it would be a blasty blast!

luvvinvinyl 11-27-2008, 06:02 PM Fear not. Have a look at the mod staff, and see how many of us are Canadian. After all, it's a pretty poor existence if we can't poke fun at ourselves once in a while.
That said, there is still good reason for some trepidation, at Secret Santa time. You just never know what may come your way.
Dennydog, my wife calls her socks, like the ones you pictured, 'toe socks'.
BTW, is there some reason why, in spite of the fact that the whole of Minnesota is well north of David (Vintageman1) and me, Minnesotans insist on referring to their relative location as 'down here'?:scratch2:

Way to win a chicken dinner!
Njord Noatun 11-28-2008, 12:10 AM Minnesotans insist on referring to their relative location as 'down here'?A good fact for a bar bet would be that there are parts of Canada farther to the south than parts of California! Another good bar bet out these ways would be that Reno, Nevada is farther to the west than San Diego, California.
But a map would confirm both statements!

You know you are talking to a Minnesotan if you hear them say they are "going up north to go fishing". I guess there aren't any lakes south of where anyone in the state lives. I'm sure everyone that lives in this state knows what I mean when I say that.

luvvinvinyl 11-30-2008, 03:07 PM Open it when you wish. Upon arrival, Hannukah, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Little Christmas, your birthday...
Be sure to post in the "What'd ya get from your Secret Santa?" thread.
beans 11-30-2008, 03:19 PM I'm going to have to just order something for mine and have it shipped directly to their house. I'm having the surgery done on my neck this week and I still haven't figured out what to get. Plus, I still have others (family) to shop for. Sound cool?
luvvinvinyl 11-30-2008, 03:21 PM Many of us do that. Whatever works for you. This is supposed to be fun for both the giver and recipient, so try to avoid stress over this.

Vintageman1 12-11-2008, 04:34 PM Mine went out days ago, the post office said they delivered it but no posting from the recipient. I hope it was not stolen from his mail box.............I guess what I am saying is, even though you received your gifts, and decided to leave them under the tree for Christmas, we should at least post and say they have arrived safe and sound.
dokblues 12-11-2008, 05:31 PM Package #1 in route via priority mail. Now if the other piece will just get here!! :scratch2: Might be a little late for the18th but should make it for Christmas, I hope!!
mech986 12-11-2008, 08:01 PM Hi guys,
Took quite a while to decide on what my recipient was going to get and then it took considerable time to track something down.
However, the deed is done and will ship soon. Just waiting for confirmation. Hmmm, now to consider adding a little extra. :scratch2:
Regards,
Bart

mech986 12-14-2008, 06:29 PM Just to let my SS know, I received 2 packages from Amazon.com early last week. My wife couldn't figure out what we ordered until I noticed it had "mech986" as part of the name.
They're under the non-existant tree right now (will be doing some work upstairs this week so have to keep the Living room clear), will open on the 18th - love the anticipation!
Thanks SS, whomever you are.
Regards,
Bart
MikeCh 12-14-2008, 10:18 PM Hoping my SS gift will go out either Monday or Tuesday of this week....depends if what I ordered is sitting in my PO Box or not. Been out of town for the past three days, so I'll check on it tomorrow.
dnewma04 12-14-2008, 10:19 PM My gift to my recipient was sort of hand delivered by another AKer. :)

Last piece, eh? :D
I got my gift out today amidst the ice. Sure was nice to have a 4x4 today. Luckily my gift doesn't have too far to go so it may make it by the 18th. We'll see. The weather may be a deciding factor.
Ray
abpeep 12-16-2008, 04:33 PM Despite a bit of incompetence :stupid: on my part (don't ask), I got mine headed off to the intended vict...er, recipient and it should arrive in time.

mech986 12-16-2008, 04:50 PM That last pieces of the puzzle have now been found, solved and on their way.
Let's see if they can figure out this clue. They should allow my victim, er, recipient to dance in comfort all year round...:music:
Hopefully, the bad weather around the US won't keep Santa's Postal helpers from their appointed rounds.
We should all applaud the USPS, UPS, and FedEx along with some AK elves for helping all of us get our SS booty out in a timely manner. Without them, we just wouldn't be having all this fun!!
Regards,
Bart
jerrymrc 12-16-2008, 05:25 PM Now that sounds like it will be one unique SS gift:yes:

Bigerik 12-20-2008, 10:18 AM My SS was incredibly kind to me this year. Aside from a wonderful collection of cd's that I hope to have enough time to listen to over the holidays, I also got about the most beautiful record clamp I have ever seen. I mean, this thing is gorgeous. As much a piece of art as a usefull audio tool. I just could not be happier!
Thanks SS, whoever you are! :)
