I have a second sub on it's way soon and I'm not sure where I'm going to put it yet. My HT and 2 channel rigs are in the same room. Has anyone ever stacked subs on top of each other? One is for the 5.1 HT and the other is for the 2 channel system. They'd never be on at the same time and both are front firing. I'm just wondering what the one on top would sound like at about 18 inches off of the floor. What do you guys think?

I recently added a Proton AP-1000 modified preamp to my system and it has L and R sub outs. I tried my Polk PSW450 thru the preamp and was pleasantly surprised by the extra low end, even though it was only turned up to about 10:00 and the Xover set to 75 Hz. It sounded a little boomy set at 150 Hz. It has tightend up the bass a bit and it sounds punchier. I bought a refinished JBL G Sub10 with a 100 watt amp for $80 and will probably try that thru the Proton first. The Polk is a 150 watt powered 12" but I'd rather keep that with the HT system because that entire system is Polk's, front, rear and center.

Happens all the time in sound reinforcement applications. Just make sure everything's in-phase.

If they wont be on at the same time they wont effect each other in terms of phase. Only affect is one will be 18" off the floor, so it will have less bass reinforcement from floor reflections - which may make it less boomy and tighten up the sound.

Oh.
I actually don't like the idea of having one or more off and not driving. Not only because I like it cranked, but because it's a little resonator. It's best if the cone is not being sympathetic to what's happening acoustically.

Thanks for the input on the subs guys. I've attached photos of the preamp, including nudes. :D When the sub arrives, I'll have to play around with placement, although I'm not sure it'll make much difference.

By the way, does anybody know where I can get a manual for the Proton AP-1000?

Stacked subs are the order of the day at live concerts. Should be no problem. Make sure the top one can not vibrate off the bottom one. I would use some type of anti-slide mats.

Using both the speaker inputs and the RCA inputs?

Hmmm...:scratch2:...never have seen a recommendation to use both at the same time...if that's what you mean.

Thanks. I never thought about it vibrating off. I'm not even sure that the sub I bought has any feet on it though. It might just be a flat bottom by looking at the photos.

That looks like it would match well visually with my JBL CF-150's. Not that I need a sub with 15" woofers in each speaker through.

i meant at different times. one day they were wired in stereo. then for an experiment, using just te rca jacks. i think it can be used using both inputs.IIRC klipsch spec sheets say its permissible. tho i never tried it. so hows your day?:D

I wouldn't stack them. I've seen subs stacked and the top one did indeed vibrate off of the bottom one, not a good idea.

If you are not going to separate them sell the one you have and buy one that will do the job properly. If you don't like the sound of your Polk with music it may not be setup properly or it doesn't play flat enough to integrate with your main speakers. There are most likely many subs in same price range as your Polk that will perform it with both music and HT. HSU and SVS are two.

I like the sound of the Polk for music. I just want a separate sub for each system. I didn't think it'd be a good idea to hook the sub up to both the HT receiver thru the LFE input, and the 2 channel preamp thru the L R inputs at the same time, even though only one signal would be passing. What do you think? Would that be an issue? I don't think it would be, but I don't want to try it and blow something up. Up 'till now I've been I've been unplugging one and plugging in the other cables when I switch from HT to music. With separate subs, I won't have to do that.

What do you think? Would that be an issue? Sorry, I didn't catch that from your first post. So you have both systems sitting side by side? It's not a good idea to have them both hooked up to the sub at the same time although I doubt there would be any issues. You can use a Y RCA cable and have both outputs from the pre outs into one sub, maybe that's what you did already, but don't have them both on at the same time. But if you are trying to run two separate systems in the same physical space a single sub won't be optimized for either system so you are better off having two subs like you are planning on doing. I'd try and find space for the second sub that's on the floor.

I actually have 2 separate cables, a single RCA sub cable from the A/V receiver that I plug into the single LFE input on the sub and a double L+R RCA cable from the stereo preamp sub outs to the L+R inputs on the sub. I agree with you that even though they won't be on at the same time, I don't even want to try and keep them both plugged in simultaneously.
The Polk sub is sitting next to the left speakers and if I don't stack the JBL on top, I might have room behind the right speakers for it.

My new sub arrived last week.
I have it stacked on top of my HT sub. Sounds great. I put a small rubber mat between them and I don't think I'll have any issues with it vibrating off. Pics attached. Thanks to all who posted. :thmbsp:
