Need some vintage stereo

This site is more or less dedicated to vintage, we will get you set up very nicely for well under what you could spend on a new crap stereo from wal mart. Like the one in my avatar, I have about $200 worth of components in that. :thmbsp:

Although that is one spiffy looking remote.

Just the CF-150s alone are worth 6-7 times that. Nice setup. :thmbsp:

Yeah, those speakers were found on craigs list, and the rest were found at garage sales. Its amazing how cheep people will sell you their "old junk"

Ain't gonna happen. Not untill I get some Altec A7's, even then they might be used as rear channels and a way over the top surround system.

Hey, it's what sounds good to you, and that's not exactly plastic crap, that's some nice equipment, that Denon is. XLR inputs and outputs, that's pretty good stuff!

go vintage start here with four channels get your self a nice center channel amp like this one you will have to replace those speakers though

Indeed... my "vintage" equipment is really only marginal though - Cerwin vega AT-15 and VS-150 speakers. I guess 20 years is good enough to be vintage.

I've been thinking about a horn project, but I really don't know where to start. Looks like fun.

@ yamahammer - Are you referring to replacing my speakers?

The basic pile probably has potential in some of the bits and pieces. But before we can say much or add to your planning for upgrades, we need to know a bit more about your goals? Do you mind black, or are you drawn to classic silver/wood? How big is your room? What kinds of music do you listen to? Do you listen with headphones, or only on speakers? Can you comfortably furnish around speakers and other Hi-Fi gear? Do you have a look you are trying for?

So I have about 10 vintage receivers that get to rotate through some of my systems. BUT, I also have three AV receivers that either do duty as 2 channel rigs with extra inputs, or they switch from 5.1 to 2 channel as needed. So I'd say stay with the receiver you have now and let's see if we can't get your ears happier :music:

As is stated in the Speaker Forum title, SPEAKERS are the most important link in the audio chain (unless you spend all your time with headphones?). The mix of speakers I see there looks pretty mediocre. Does your AV receiver have a menu choice for big or large front speakers left and right? If so, I'll bet it'll do for now as we work you toward good sounds.

Do you mind working with your hands? Do you do craft or DIY projects around the house? If so, you can probably refurb a decent pair of older speakers without too much trouble and save yourself serious $$ :)

We can chime in here with many speaker recommendations. A/D/S, EPI, Genesis, Infinity, B&W, KEF, Boston Acoustics, the list goes on... The point is that there are many good ones to pick from to get you started. The first pair will not be the last. They will be about getting you to learn speaker basics and how to listen to the good so you can separate the wheat from the chaff when yard sailing and thrift store browsing, checking CraigsList (CL), etc.

If you want Sir Byrd to lead the charge, that's fine. We'll just drop in now and then with ideas and suggestions :D

You're going to spend about $15 a month on batteries for that remote. Between the landing-strip brightness of the blue display that goes on every time you fart and the x-ray quality IR beam it chews up batteries like Pamela Anderson's 'accessory' collection.

For vintage speakers I would recommend Advent speakers. Original or New sound prettymuch the same. Even though they are worth ~$50-100 I still have a pair in my main system and they are NOT going anywhere!

They also will give you great refoam experience because the woofers will for sure need new foam if the it is original, and they are VERY easy to do (I've done about 20 pairs)

Also, there were a TON of them sold, so they are pretty easy to find. You should try asking your neighbors if they have them.

That is all for now.
