Wow, you guys have way more speakers than I would ever care to own!

I've got four sets and I think that's too much, I feel three is the perfect number.

I've got:
Tonsil Unitra ZG201C30's that need a refoam but work great
Celestion Ditton 44's that need some crossover work
IMF TLS 50 II's that need the midranges changed (have them, just gotta do it)
IMF TLS 80 II's that need crossover work

Unfortunately all my speakers need some sort of work done to them, but the TLS 50's sound fantastic even as they are. The TLS 80's though.. I cannot wait to get those up and running!!

Just sold my Snell Type M s and my Cerwin Vega D9 s and my Polk RT8 s...

OMG..... Yeah, that's a few speakers.

Me? I have five pairs :D (I'm not really a collector. Just a listener).... Well, it's six pairs actually, but the last pair is not even worth mentioning... Cheap, late '70's Marantz RM100's (Try looking THOSE up online... The only thing you'll find is my own thread asking about them... They were free and I just haven't had the heart to throw them out yet).

Anyway, here's the five...

1. Wharfedale W90's (ported 3-way with 6 isolated alnico drivers per cab... Incredible speakers)

2. Wharfedale W60's (ported 2-ways with alnico drivers)

3. Wharfedale W60E's (acoustic-suspension 3-ways

4. dB Plus 1010's (Made by API in Canada)

5. Soundtech 3-way PA speakers (From around 1988-1989... I can't remember the model... I think I paid $475 new for the pair... I have to pull the grills off of these and get a good look at the surrounds because these were packed away for quite a while, and I just pulled them out this week... They both worked when I left them, but that doesn't mean much)

That's pretty awesome though. I'd love to do a quadrophonic set-up with 4 of those, that would be DREAMY.

This reminds me of something I've read on Levinson's personal setup(the exception being run in stereo) at some point. I would love to hear that setup.

Here is my list:
JBL 250Ti LE
JBL 18Ti - two pairs
JBL L250 - 250Ti conversion to run fully active
JBL L212A - XPL/Ti conversion in progress.
JBL PS-1400 - pair
JBL B460
BIC Venturi Formula 6:confused:

JBL project in mostly loose parts to run fully active:
[4] 2245H 18" subwoofer drivers
[2] 2220H 15" midbass drivers
[2] 2123H 10" midrange drivers
[2] 2445 4" compression drivers

I bought my first real set of speakers in 1993 when I worked at a store selling a/v stuff... it was a pair of Infinity RS 525 towers and an Infinity Kappa Video center channel (powered by a denon receiver and CD changer). I still own them and the original boxes.

Over the years, I've collected a few trashed speakers and parted them for different projects... some Altecs that used to hang in a movie theater, a pair of 70's era Infinity speakers with emit tweeters, some Normans...

Last year, I started looking at more vintage speakers, and I found a pair made by some generations-old Dallas-based company that now just does pro sound (I forget the brand name, but their logo is a D in a circle). They were $10 at an estate sale. Then, I found some Pioneer CS-33's and some CS-E450's at GW for $15 and $25 respectively, which play on my home office system. I also got some of those tiny metal Realistic speakers that look like shrunken versions of an a/d/s L300 bookshelf speakers. I use these in my boys' bedroom.

My newest additions to the house are my Stromberg-Carlson speakers, Infinity RS3B towers, and some M&K 750 satellites.

I don't have anything too fancy and currently only have two pairs hooked up. One in the office and one in the dining room.

JBL S38II (two pairs)
Paradigm Phantom v1 (office)
Edge Audio (Aperion Audio) 502
Yamaha 690II
Altec 889a (dining room, about to be replaced by the Yamaha's)
Cheapo Aiwa speakers that came from a bookshelf system (these will end up in the garage.)
Cerwin Vega D3 (I think, I can't really remember since they've been in my bother's basement for a few years. These things need new woofers and should be in my garage though.)

You can have many pairs of pretty good speakers with a few really good ones, or a just few really good ones. I think I'd rather have a few really good ones and less the clutter.

Then again, to each their own. :)

This reminds me of something I've read on Levinson's personal setup(the exception being run in stereo) at some point. I would love to hear that setup.

Here is my list:
JBL 250Ti LE
JBL 18Ti - two pairs
JBL L250 - 250Ti conversion to run fully active
JBL L212A - XPL/Ti conversion in progress.
JBL PS-1400 - pair
JBL B460
BIC Venturi Formula 6:confused:

JBL project in mostly loose parts to run fully active:
[4] 2245H 18" subwoofer drivers
[2] 2220H 15" midbass drivers
[2] 2123H 10" midrange drivers
[2] 2445 4" compression drivers
[2] 2397 Smith horns
[2] 2405 Diffraction tweeters

Yeah, Levinson's set up used stacked ESL-57s with a Decca ribbon tweeter between them. I did run stacked 57s years ago, but I never had the Deccas... I'm sure with the ribbon (and subs he also ran), it must have been amazing! Ultimately, I prefer the 63s, even though they don't lend themselves to stacking. Some people do it, but when I tried it, they didn't image as well... they work as point sources, and two pints - well, they're pointless! :D A pair are as a dynamic as a quad of 57s anyway, and the imaging, & reliability are better too.

@ Rajoo - I love the 'kitty in a bag'.... That's cute... ("Don't forget, dude... When they say 'Paper or plastic', tell 'em you want both..... Otherwise I'll poop in your Grados again...").

I only have like 5 pairs at this point, but it might as well be one pair when you consider how happy I am with my main speakers. There are no "perfect" speakers out there that sound great with everything from old mono Louis Armstrong recordings to modern metal/nu-metal, but my current mains are pretty-damn-close (in my room at least). For my setup/budget, I don't think I could have done any better if I tried. There may not be any perfect speakers, but I'm perfectly-content with mine.

Here's the current list. All are pairs except as noted.

Vandersteen 2Ce - main system
ADS L710 - bedroom
ADS L620 - second system
KLH Five - guest bedroom
PSB Alpha Mini - office
Original Large Advent - HT front
(3) Soliloquy SAT5 - HT surrounds and center
(1) Velodyne CT-80 - HT sub
KLH Seventeen - recapping/restoring
Soliloquy 5.0 - babysitting them for a friend, may go in office
Vandersteen 1B - in rotation
NHT SuperZero - just arrived
(1) NHT 1.1c - just arrived
Wharfedale W20 - will test them out for a friend

Many other speakers have come and gone, mostly to friends or family who needed audio upgrades. It's a lot of fun to share the love, no?

I wonder how nice those XR-250's sound... I've read some good things about them. I'd REALLY-like to hear a pair of those F100's.

Anyway, like I said before, I only own like 5 pairs of real speakers, but the only ones I care about are the Wharfedale W90's, W60's, and W60's plus the dB Plus 1010's (The W90's are BY FAR my favorite, followed by the W60's).

I got way too much...
KEF 104.2 (great imaging but sound not as good as current speakers)
Magnepan 1.6QR (too forward soundstage, weak bass)
Magnepan 2.7QR (need to relaminate the voice coils)
Polk RTi55 (2 pairs) in the bedroom
Polk LSi15 (smooth top and mid-range, a bit weak on bass)(updated crossover with $300 caps)
Polk LSi9 (smooth top and mid-range, weak on bass)
Polk RTA12c (disappointing bass)(heavily updated crossover with $500 of new caps and resistors. Waste of money)
Polk Monitor 10 (ditto)(modded with new crossover components and silk-domed driver)
Polk Monitor 5 jr (ditto)
Sony SS-M9 (great bass extension, treble a little rough)
Yamaha NS1000M (boomy bass, bright mid-range and hot high end)

Over the weekend, I decided to see which was the best setup in my 18'x25' room... I first tried every speaker with the same amp... In the end, the Polk LSI15 won out... It was the most detailed and smoothest speaker in the bunch... The bass was a bit weak (8" woofers). The LSi9s came in second, but no bass (bookshelf)

After deciding on the speakers, I threw in all the different amps I got... Sony TA-8650, Sony TA-F808ES, Acurus DIA-100, Onkyo TX-NR905, Nakamichi CA2/PA5, Marantz PM-7200, Sony STR-DA5ES. The winner was the Marantz PM-7200. The Acurus was second... solid bass, good imaging but a little harsh on the high end.

Speaker cables was next... I did not have much to choose from. I had vintage Polk Cobra cables, generic cables, medium gauge Monster XPHP cables and Monster 1.2S speaker cables... The Polk were the worst, super harsh. The best was the Monster 1.2S. I know Monster are crap but it was what I had, it won.

After spending a whole day (back breaking for sure) shifting gear all around, the Marantz PM-7200 integrated amp, Marantz SA-8260 CD player, Polk LSi15 speakers, Monster 1.2S speaker cables and the AudioQuest Diamondback (the sound from these cables were superior to the generic Sony Litz audio cables) interconnect cables had the best sound... I am planning to buy Audioquest Cobras or Columbia interconnects next... Let's see where that will take me.

I don't collect nor do I get rid of stuff I like just to try something else. This stuff is a means to an end and not, in and of itself, a hobby for me. It's all about trying to listen to the music on a system that pleases my ears in the room it's in.

My main system uses a pair of Celestion DL-8 Series II speakers I bought new. Always liked their sound.

My living room system uses a pair of NHT SuperOnes. I've always liked what NHT has tried to do in the world of speakers.

My bedroom system uses a pair of Minimus 7's. Had these for 25 years and still am amazed at how good they are in a smaller room.

That's it!

Thirteen pair currently in service in a relatively small house.

Infinity RS 2.5 Living room
Infinity Infinitesimal 0.1 Living room
Infinity Infinitesimal 0.2 Living Room
Infinity Infinitesimal 0.3 Garage
Infinity Monitor IIa Music Room
Infinity 2000II Music Room
Infinity Monitor Jr Music Room
Infinity WTLC Music Room
Infinity RSM (latest addition) Dining Room
Ohm Walsh 2 Bedroom
JBL 4310 Office
Sony SS-M7 Living room
Sony APM-22 Office

The casual observer might notice that I am partial to Infinity's. This affinity began when I bought my first pair of Monitors around 1974. They are gone but the Monitor IIa's I purchased in 1976 are fully restored and alive and kicking.

Not counted are the Sunfire CRM-2BIP surrounds, Martin Logan fresco i center, and HSU STF-2 Subwoofer that are the more contemporary components of my Home Theater system of which certain of the above listed vintage speakers are also a part.

Also not counted but working are a spare pair of Sony SS-M7's and a single JBL 4310 along with a couple of small Infinity's, Qe's and RS 3000's, that are currently in storage in the garage.

Not specifically mentioned are various and sundry empty or partially empty Infinity cabinets also in the garage.

When does enough really mean enough?

In house:

Two pairs New Large Advent---Utility Cabinets
One pair Infinity SM 112
One pair Boston Acoustics HD-9---Just re-foamed both woofers, both passive radiators. Surprising amount of decent quality sound from relatively small (to my eyes) speakers. These speakers originally retailed for around $345---$350 per pair but you can get them, recently re-foamed, on CL or the ePlace for around $50 a pair. The re-foam kits for the woofers and the radiators totaled about $52.00; my only advantage was that my son got the HD-9s for free from a bar he was helping demolish. Dunno what the shipping would add to the $50.00 ePlace price.

In process:

I have the woofers from a pair of New Large Advents, ca. 1978. I just re-foamed them. Soon I will buy some 3/4" MDF, a couple crossovers, and the rest of the stuff (horns, tweeters, etc.) needed to generate a pair of Econowaves. (Props to Zilch...)

I have close to 100 sets of speakers and too many to list now. I love them all. I look at them, play with them, hear them, talk to them, kiss them, cuddle with the image of them in my heart, envision a world where only perfect music and sound exists and we see a penultimate human decency grow and grow. Where there is no more sexism, racism, discrimination, hate, mistreatment, cruelty, no poverty, no war. Just by all and for all of us :P

Marantz 600 my favorite. Frequency range 25-28. Super rare. If you have never seen them look under my name or search.
Marantz 200 little brother, nice for office.
2 sets Marantz 880 Frequency range 30-22. Voted best speaker in 700/800? Price range by consumer reports in 1978.
Bose 901 Series 6. You either love or hate them.

One comment I will make is Marantz speakers do not get the credit they deserve. Especially the designs by Ed May.

The recent consumer reports articles from the 70-80's are showing how good marantz was during this era.

They have Vifa tweeters and the typical non-descript 7.5 ohm made in Taiwan midranges with rubber surrounds. The tops are held in place by a guide rod that goes through the body and is held secure by a nut that is tightened on the bottom cap of the speaker. Since you appear to be a really serious audiophile, I only have one suggestion- try getting another pair of Thrusters. Stacked Thrusters are probably the best sound I've heard from a 2-channel setup.

I have a few pair, but only three pairs in stereo use-

Awaiting repair-

Phase Technology PC-80 (needs new woofers)
JBL LX-22 (just needs surrounds, will go to parents when done)
Infinity RS4s need original woofers too, but they are still in use.

I also have some etc. speakers-

Chinese iHome speakers, little 4-ohm bookshelf things
JVC full-range bookshelfs from a micro system, in use with a home theater setup

Just a few pair:
McIntosh XR-250 (first ones off the line!) (main system in the family room)
McIntosh Stereotech 3 (new woofer surrounds, Vifa dome tweeters, retired)
Realistic Minimus 7 (bedroom)
Altec ACS-41 computer speakers (PC in the office)
Lahti U2 (stereo in the office)
McIntosh F100 (rarest of the rare, display only 'til I can collect more mono gear)

Time to update the list - just picked up a nice pair of shiny white NHT Super Zeros . I'm figuring on using them as computer speakers in the office; I can hand-me-down the Altecs to one of the kids, or use 'em in the garage with a portable mp3 player, since the wife quite rightly pointed out I need *some* kind of music in the garage.

Just added a pair of the Insignia NS-B2111s, the co-axial design that was the rage about a year ago. Pretty decent-sounding speakers. I got them basically for the cabinets and binding posts for a full range project but I kinda like them as is. I'd prefer a bit more detail out of the tweeter or actually, I'd prefer the tweeter be about 2dB louder so I'll probably tweak the crossover and the cabinets could stand some reinforcement.. Other than that, with a sub, I think they'll be an enjoyable set.

I've got too many..

IMF TLS 80 II
IMF RSPM Mk IV (main speakers)
Celestion Ditton 44
Polk Audio Monitor 10a
Wharfedale W60
Yamaha NS-430

The TLS 80's, Polk Monitor 10a's and the Wharfedale W60's are on the chopping block though so I will be down to 3 pairs soon.

Time to update my list as well.

I sold the IMF TLS 80 II's, the Celestions, the Wharfedales and the Polks. I acquired some other speakers in the interim, but here is where I'm at now:

IMF Super Compact Mk I
IMF RSPM Mk IV
Kef 104/2
Yamaha NS-430
Sanyo AD-3060 (not your typical Sanyo speaker either!)

That's it.. thankfully. When the Sanyo's are functioning properly, those will be sold, along with the Yamaha's and then I am just down to 3 pairs. That is where I'd like to be at. I'll probably add more though knowing me.

I've gone all-DIY a while ago. :) A pair of backup Minimus 7 was the last commercial speaker to tread these now unsoiled grounds... ;)

a) 5ft^3 reflex enclosure for AE TD15M and BMS 4550 on QSC waveguide. Music/hobby room speakers.

b) Slim tower for Celestion TF1020 and Selenium D220Ti on Dayton 10" round waveguide. Living room and TV/movie speakers.

c) Karlson SK8 with Fostex FF225WK. Take them out for a spin once in a while.

d) Mini-reflex enclosure for Fostex FF125K. Laptop speakers.

e) Compact backload horn for Fostex FF85WK. Also Take them out for a spin once in a while.

f) Small reflex for Vifa C13 5" midbass and Vifa H26TG 1" dome, with small waveguide. Bedroom computer speakers.

g) Upcoming project to replace the b) speakers: Peerless HDS 830869 8" woofers and BMS 4540ND on 6"x6" JBL PT waveguide, enclosure details still being worked out.

I've got a couple pairs:

DCM Timeframe 400
DCM Timeframe 500
DCM CX27
Polk Audio Monitor5jr
JBL 030 system in DIY cabinets
Kenwood KL-555DX

The 500s are my main pairs. The 400s are sitting where a system used to be. The 27s are stacked up with the Polks waiting assignment. The JBLs were "stolen" by my mother. The Kenwoods are just an old pair of speakers a friend who's no longer around gave me. They've served as rear-surrounds and; twice; the speakers I used for DJ'ing wedding receptions.

The Kenwoods have to be my "oddest" pair. They have all the flair of 70s styling. They're also power hungry; with 185 watt rating listed on the back. Prior to my JBLs; they had the largest woofers of any speakers I owned coming in at 12" (the JBLs have 15").

Out of all my pairs; the TimeFrames are my favorites.

Damn, you guys have a lot of speakers! :)

Used to have a bunch more, but got sick of having too much stuff. 2/6 in my list are not in a permanent setup and neither take too much storage space. What is not listed though, are the raw drivers sitting in boxes... :para:

Boston Acoustics A 400 that you have is one on my list that I've always wanted to hear.

Not being able to sell my beautiful B/A T 1000s, I decided to pull them out of retirement and am running them with my tube gear in the vintage system.

I had forgotten what a nice sounding speaker there are. I'll bet the A 400 sounds even better.

I have heard that said as well regarding the T1000/T1030.

Who'd have thought that flip flopping the tweets with the mids could do all that - but heck - what do I know? :scratch2::D

On another forum, a man who designed B/A crossovers said he felt the T1000 a bit better for classical music; the 1030 better for pop/rock - which is just as well for me anyway. I've owned the A 100, A 150, T830 & T1000 and feel the 1000 is the best of that group.

The A 400 is supposed to be B/A's finest moment though. It's a shame B/A lost touch with its roots.

This mornings little tremor was literally a wake up call to the problem of tippage or at worse, accidental mayhem.

I have used many vintage and A/V receivers ranging from 50 wpc to 120 wpc with A400's but my aha moment was when I used separates.
Even my Sansui G8000 with 120 wpc didn't bring them alive but when I used HK AP2500 pre with a Speakercraft Big Bang BB275 (75wpc), everything had punch and it sounded really nice and powerful.
Then I went with Adcom GFA-555II and now Rotel RB-990BX, both 200 wpc but since A400's are 4 ohms, they both are at 330 wpc.
So they need high current amps that are stable at low ohms. :thmbsp:

I have a few pairs yet to build which include enough drivers to build 5 pairs of satelites with accompaning subwoofers (2) and another 2 ACI Subwoofers with the remarkable SV-12 and plate amps.

Whats working, playing and gathering dust are:

Chartwell LS3/5a hooked up to a Satterberg MW1 woofer
ACI ; G2/R, M2, Super Titan, Sapphire II, (2) Sapphire III, (2) Titan Subs
Fried H/2 ; coffin dual channel sub w/ Sats
(3) LS3/5a homemade clones; one @ 15 ohms and 2 @ 8 ohms w/ different Xovers designs.

Looking for a good early summer propject but have yet to finish the research and locate the drivers but it'll be fun!!

It's been just over a year since I posted this so how about a little update..

IMF RSPM Mk IV
Kef LS50
Celestion Ditton 66 (needs mid domes but those are on the way :D)
Acoustic Research AR3a

I've also got a project pair of IMF ALS 40 IIs sitting in the closet as well as a project pair of IMF Super Compact Mk Is. I think the Super Compacts will be broken down into parts to use for the ALS 40 IIs, though.

It's nice to finally have pared down my collection to something much more manageable.. having tons of speakers is not my thing! I like to keep it simple and focus on a couple of really good pairs instead of a bunch of decent ones.

As my last marriage was cratering, me wife (now ex) tried to convince my family and friends that I was a crazy hoarder who was wasting time and money buying old, nearly worthless stuff on epay and Craigs.

It was somewhere after the sixth 40 lb+ amp, eighth pair of ADS speakers, and the Bose 901's from the real WKRP that needed new surrounds to get them working that I started to buy into it as well. I considered going to a psychiatrist.

Then I joined AK and as I discovered what many of you were hanging on to. I realized I was normal after all!!! Thank you all for helping me realize how screwed up all the rest of those people out there really are.

Does anyone want my ex wife's address and phone number?

Quick idea- If you wife looks frazzled and asks you why you have all this audio stuff, tell her it's because she has a larger clothes closet than you do.

I drive the 3A's with a 9090 DB rebuilt completely by CR in Boothwyn, PA (145 wpc) and there is no limit to what they will do. Favorites are the AR 5's because I bought them in 1971 at the Navy Exchange in Rota when I should have known better. I'm listening to them right now, so may have been a good investment after all. Oh, I almost forgot about the Large Advents, KLH's Fisher, Sonics, RS, and who knows what else!

I have a set of IMF Compact Monitor II's. They are my main speakers and I adore them. I bought them about two years ago on a whim, knowing nothing about them. I paid $80 for them, and the gentleman who sold them said he found them in a home he purchased from a elderly British couple. They sound great to me, and I've never opened them up, so I'm not sure if anything really needs to be repaired or upgraded. Could anyone recommend a good speaker wire that would suit these. Right now I'm using standard RCA 14 gauge wire I think.

I stumbled across a pair of KLH 355s (The Barons) at an outdoor antique festival last Sunday. After some chit chat about everything except the speakers (*snicker*) I casually asked "do they work and how much?" (while putting on my best "I really don't care or want them" face) and he said "they sound great...forty dollars". Now, I'm not the world's most knowledgeable guy when it comes to audio gear but, I do know KLH, vintage and luck when I see it. Done. And, they sound fine. One defective tweeter, both mids are tight and someone along the line dropped in a pair of 10" Sonodyne woofers that look fairly new. I'm in the process of refinishing the cabinets (not that bad to begin with but I get absorbed in these things), replacing the tired grill fabric and finally, rebuilding the wooden bases. Oh yeh, one more thing. They originally came with smoked glass tops in the recessed top of the cabinets which, of course were missing. Sitting on my bookshelf are two smoked glass squares that, ironically, are exact fits. I paid $2 for the glass at a Goodwill store months ago because they looked cool. Little did I know they had a future sitting on top of my Barons.
