View Full Version : Capacitors for Capacitance!!!

Years ago I added ceramic disc capacitors in my PAT-5 to adjust the load capacitance for my V15-III. I am in the process of going through the PAT-5 and recapping where needed and probably where not!! Part of the project is to change the caps that were installed for the V15.

Question is: Rat Shack carries a very limited range of ceramics. None that are even close to what was or is needed (approx 300 mfd). Can other types of caps be used?? IE: mylar, electrolytic, or ??? They do have a better selection of these other types. In my area, there is no other electronic suppliers, and will end up ordering on-line for whatever I buy any. But for trial & error, was hoping to try using other types if avail at Rat Shack.

Thanks!

I'd be using some silver mica or similar for that sort of work. This is a bit of overkill but Antique Electonic Suppy (http://www.tubesandmore.com/) seems to have them on sale right now.

One thing to think about is that you need to consider the capacitance in the interconnect cables then add only the amount needed to bring that value up to what's been spec'd by your cartridge model.

In other words, don't dink with it until after you've got the preamp up and running again.

Cheers,
