View Full Version : Cueing doesn't raise very much recharge?

I just picked up a Pioneer PL-707 and the cueing control only raises the stylus about 1/16 (maybe less) off of the surface of the record. I can manually pull the platform that raises the tonearm and get more travel out of it. Do I need to disassemble the cueing mechanism and refill it with silicon? Any advice?

I found the cueing mechanism on my Pioneer to have a fairly flimsy metal tab the bore upon the ram had bent. If the arm lock is on and you raise the cue lever it puts a lot stress on this part, as will a gooked up ram. I had to open it up and bend the tab back into place.

There should be a screw somewhere at the base of the arm for adjusting cuing height. Clock wise would most likely decrease it and counter clock wise should raise it higher

Thanks for the advice. I think mostly it needed the cueing mechanism to be exercised (manually) to free it up. There is a small set screw on the side that allows the cue "perch" position to be adjusted. Nice TT, just needs a little bit of cleaning as the push button switches on the front aren't as smooth as they should be.

On the base of the tonearm on the right I see a slight protrusion. Is that by any chance a set screw for adjusting VTA (tonearm base height)? (I don't mean the anti-skate dial. What I'm talking about is protruding from the tonearm base itself.)

Yes, I think that is a VTA adjustment. Great, another thing for me to (sexual intercourse)-up.
This is a pretty cool TT though not as nice as the Denon DP72L I foolishly sold a few years back.

That is in fact the VTA screw. Adjust with a "coin" - loosen and make the tone arm flat while resting on the record, tighten and you're good to go.

I just got one of the TTs yesterday. Mine has a Shure 5X needle in a R47XT (MM) cart. Some of these came with MC high end carts. Does anyone that owns one of these recommend a better cart and needle for this TT. I just took out a Denon TT out of rotation and replaced it with this TT and so far I'm very pleased with the sound. Very good so far. Me thinks I can improve the sound with a better cart/needle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bob

Wow, that's a can of worms- recommending a cartridge. I just took the Shure M97 off of this TT and put on my Denon DL-300. So far so good. I also built a record clamping weight out of a reel to reel flywheel. See:

That's a pretty little unit to be sure, I hope to get a better one soon.

I wasn't recommending a cart - I was asking FOR recommendations! Nice VERY nice TT and mine sounds better with each record. I bought mine locally of CL and it seems to have been sitting for a bit - the tone arm is a little slow on the return and the table seemed to turn a tad slow at first but after letting it play a bunch of LPs it's getting better and better. Still looking for ideas for a good cart/needle!
