Hi. Our washing machine locked solid, drum was rigid like the bearing had seized. Still under guarantee but service people (based 50 miles away) said most likely cause would be a coin jammed between the drum and its housing; that this would not be classed as a 'machine defect' so their call-out plus work done would be chargeable. Long story short I dismantled the thing, removed and separated the drum housing and removed a battered coin.

Everything went back together OK but you guessed it; it won't work. It goes through it's water in and pump out, but the drum revolves very slowly on wash and doesn't go into high speed spin no matter what the control settings are. Drum bearings are good and belt tension is good. It's an Electrollux, sold in the U.K. as the INSIGHT EWF12108W. As I was dismantling it, some water spilled onto what I think is the motor control unit. It was three days after I did this that I tried it out, so I hoped it would have dried out. I've since dismantled the unit and dried it on a radiator. No water visible but maybe damage has been done.

My thoughts are either the motor was damaged when the machine locked up, the motor control unit was damaged, the CPU was damaged (maybe not likely; it's mounted safe in a top corner. The motor control unit is under the drum). Lastly and maybe hopefully, does anybody know if there's a re-start code I should put in, and if so, how to put it in via the control bar? We'd had a visit from the service people before to replace a faulty door; once the new door was fitted the guy made a quick series of button pushes to "test the machines settings"..........

OK, this is a very long shot on an audio site, but fingers crossed. I kind of burned my bridges with the service center anyway. Words were said (by me)and they say I'm blacklisted:sigh:

Go buy a used 20 year old whirlpool and throw $30 in parts into it and have it for the next 15 years. :D

Lol, on a more serious note, are you trying to watch it go with the lid up? they have sensors to slow it down or stop it if the lid is up.

You should have kept a civil tongue in your head. Then you could have called the service center back and had them come out and fix it under warranty.
Try this website, they have pretty good troubleshooting advice.

Oh so true. BUT, how would you react when you realise the any time during the day appointment could clash with your hospital appointment? You phone the service center back, find out that although they officially say they will call any time between 9 and 5 they intend calling on you in the morning, suggest that they change this to an afternoon appointment and point out that if their appointment book is full, it should be possible to change two of the appointments round. His reply? Quote "I've been doing this job for four years; I don't need telling how to do it by someone like you" This was the service center manager! I suggested that he did need telling how to do the job properly. His reply? Again a direct quote "This telephone call is terminated". Terminated? Who the hell uses a word like terminated? It was at this point I invited him to get fucked. Maybe I shouldn't have done, but I'd not come across this kind of jobs-worth mentality since the 1970's.

RESULT. I checked with my house insurance. Because the machine is still within it's original warrenty period, my house and contents cover will replace it. The didn't even need to look at the machine; apparently coins jammed in drums is a common problem and based on my description (I've been with the same company for some years) they wrote it off..........Can't be be bad :>)

You told them that coins jammed in drum was the cause?

If the tub turns during wash and won't spin at high speed then it would seem that the tub brake isn't adjusted or assembled correctly. The brake isn't releasing during spin, I think.

Glad you got it sorted out. (Or will have.) Yes, he was rude. Being nice to people who act like that sometimes works, if they're just having a bad day. Then they feel guilty and act much better. If they are just an ***hole, nothing helps.

Specifically, I told them the coin (just one) had been cleared, but that the drum would now only turn slowly; no wash or spin. This was on our houshold insurance that includes accidental damage for house contents. The machine was less than 11 months old so they replaced it with "one of similar specification". If had been mechanical or electrical breakdown it would have been covered by the manufacturers warrenty.

Interestingly, the front door gasket/water seal if properly fitted runs very close to the inner drum; it's not easy to see how a coin could find its way in there. The important words are "if properly fitted". We had had a new door fitted under guarantee some 4 months ago. If the seal had been at all out in its fitting, the clearance gap would have been a lot bigger. Wouldn't have affected the wash at all, but it would have been a lot easier for a coin to find its way down in there.
