I have a decent DVD concert collection, but would like to add to it. However, I am often dissappointed with production and sound quality.

So what concert DVDs have you been happy with?

I'll start with an obscure one...

Pink Floyd - Pulse

Godsmack Unplugged - Live at the Hardrock Cafe

What do you guys recommend? Speak up on all music genres, I love em all (except country)!

I've got a few..

John Mayall 70th Birthday Party
The Allman Brothers Live at The Beacon
are both pretty good, as is "The Last Waltz"

Rory Gallagher Irish Tour 1974 and Cream Farewell concert 1968 both show their age and aren't nearly as crisp as the modern recordings. The Cream one is pretty bad; buy it only if you are big time hard core Cream fan. The Rory Gallagher on is OK, basically as good as any older 70s movie.

I also have an Asleep at the Wheel concert in Germany and a Peter Green Splinter Group show that pretty weel done and I'd recommend those to fans also.

I'll second Cream at Royal Albert Hall. Excellent picture quality.

Here's another very good one Gov't Mule, the Deepest End, recorded at the Saenger Theater NOLA 5/3/2003. Gov't Mule with loads of well known guests on bass guitar. CD and DVD.

David Gilmour, Live at Royal Albert Hall, Remember That Night, from the On An Island tour of spring 2006. DVD.

I really enjoyed:

Metallica S&M - with the San Francisco Symphony (though Metallica's combined "attitude" was a little disappointing in that they didn't seem to appreciate that symphony much?)

Eagles - Hell Freezes Over

No Doubt - Rock Steady Live

Godsmack - Changes (the drum battle is worth the price alone imo)

Stevie Ray Vaughn fans- "Live at the El Macabo" 1983 footage. Must See

Rolling Stones "Shine A Light" - I just hope I can move half as good as Jagger at 65!-the sound and production is A+ I saw them live in 1989 and this was a better show on DVD.

Their 25 year reunion . . . saw it at the library reluctantly took it out, because I didn't want to overshadow my fond memories but was totally suprised. If you liked The ELP, Tarkus (my fave), Trilogy and Pictures at an Exhibition albums you will enjoy this. The sound isn't great but it works. Keith Emersons Finale is simply great!!!

Alison Krauss & Union Station Live

I don't know if they have it on DVD (I recorded it). Alison Krauss & Union Station with Vince Gill. Classic! (I know, you said no country)

Also, Bela Fleck - Live at the Quick. Talk about some musical talent. Many of the songs on this DVD are on youtube, if you want to sample before you buy. Half of the musicians are guests, and I guarantee you will hear something you have never heard before (whether it's woodwinds or strings on a wah-wah pedal, sopranino sax, or a guy singing 3 notes at the same time). Arguably, the best banjo & bass players on the planet. It's a keeper for me...........

Here's a sample. Scratch & Sniff has the instruments on wah-wah pedal. Enjoy!

Grateful Dead: Closing of Winterland. Bill Graham flys in at midnight on a huge spliff and then introduces them. Gotta love it.

The picture quality is lacking compared to the sound. I was kind of disappointed in that one.

Better picture, but lacking good sound is the RFK stadium DVD.

Since I work at Alpine, Downhill from Here is my favorite, but it's Brent Myland show and I don't care for his vocals. Guess I'm being too picky.

Not sure if you would be into it but,

Whitesnake's In the Still of the Night DVD has outstanding sound well recorded as well as an energetic performance. Not sure if there any overdubs but who cares it seperates well in surround mode and sounds killer in stereo too. Coverdale's voice comes through but so do the guitars and the drums are there just as they should be.
Make sure to get the collectors limited edition as the single regular one with only the DVD has all the cursing muted (G version?) so it is very annoying watching that version, not that cursing helps the show but its there and seeing lips moving but no sound is just funky.
Nice mix IMHO.:guitar::rockon::music:

Interesting tangent to that- Alison produced Nickel Creek (bluegrass group), who became friends with Fiona Apple, who toured with Nickel Creek singing bluegrass versions of her songs. Very interesting tour. Can't find a really good vid of it, though. Don't know if anything's going to be released from it.

Spin off from Nickel Creek. Chris Thile, the mandolin player, and the projects he puts together for an album and a tour. I know he makes some weird faces, but he can really play.

Rush-X30 (A Show of Hands is the real gem)

I agree about R30, but ASOH has always sounded anemic and weak to me. Exit and Grace are better imo (and The Camera Eye which never made it to DVD).

Also, add Rush's Snakes and Arrows Live to R30, even better sound and camera angles. :thmbsp: These two are a must have for any Rush/rock/classic rock fan imo. Rush is simply one of the best live acts ever and these prove it!

Hey,Concerts are my Passion! I generally look for the best quality sound and a good picture.I return them if the sound is not up to my standards.I will however tolerate a less than perfect picture but not shaky or piss poor camera work.
I have a Panasonic Tau tube HD(1080i)tv,so not sure how these may fair visually on yours or on the newer tv's.I run a two channel tube amp and Altec Model 19's speakers and a tricked up dvd player to enjoy them.I generally buy dvd concerts used or get them as gifts at Christmas/Birthdays.
Here is my list of the BEST sounding concerts in my opinion through my Altecs 19s with tubes and modified dvd player.I like guitar, any kind,so lots of guitar work, instrumentals & vocals, its my list of concerts I enjoy and will keep.
Some I have not watched yet but they have excellent reviews on Amazon so I buy them.
Many of the Bands I really enjoy have Musicians that have passed on but their Music is very much Alive and well done!
The List:
Diana Krall Live in Paris & Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival.(sultry)
Sade Lovers Live(sexy)
Sarah McLaughlin Mirrorball.unwatched
Dido(excellent back up Musicians)
Fleet wood Mac Live in Boston,Mick Fleetwood & the percussionist's solo is infectious.I was a drummer so like excellent drummers, even if they are getting older.Music somehow brings older Musicians Alive and they do incredible things!
Eagles Hell Freezes over. Some of the Best sound on a dvd I have ever heard
Eagles Farewell I Tour Live from Melbourne.Enjoyable.
Eric Clapton 2007 Crossroads Festival,a classic,Check out John Mayer,Susan Tedeschi,Derek Trucks wife,Jeff Beck,check out his bassist,Wow!..many,many other excellent artists,great sound,good camera work,an excellent dvd.
Steve Miller Band Live in Chicago.Just bought it and am amazed how good a guitarist this guy is!,so by far one of my all time favorite's.In my opinion, how a dvd should sound and be filmed.I get high every time I watch this!
Van Halen Live without a Net.Excellent guitar,a piece of Rock History
Great Big Sea (accapella,)Canadian eh.Great Big Newfie Kitchen Party eh! You can not sit down when watching this one!
The Rankin Family,Live from the Orpheum in Vancouver,an old haunt of mine as was the Commodore Ballroom.Canadian Band, stopped touring when John Morris died in a tragic car accident taking his kids to Hockey.
Eagles Farewell Tour.I saw the Eagles when I was younger,so nostalgia for me as many other bands are.
Norah Jones Live in New Orleans.Ravi Shankar's daughter. She can sing but is very laid back.Unwatched.
John Mayer, and Given Thursday. His early work.I'm 55 and really liked it!
Cat Stevens Majicat..His last concert before he stopped playing in 1979.Saw him live.Spiritual.
Yusif's Cafe, Cat Stevens new name Wow,Porchester Hall in London has amazing acoustics. This was 28 years after he stopped playing.Excellent, very personal songbook. You will either embrace this or reject is depending on where you are in your own life.
Van Morrison Live at Montreux. 2 Concerts A young Van & later 1980/1974.His band is great and have a good time playing.Van's Music will always be a part of my Life, even after he is gone.A favorite.
ACDC Stiff Upper Lip.Crank it up,grab a drink & and hang on, AC/DC working a stage with over 80'000 hardcore fans in Germany.High Energy with one of the coolest stages.I believe every single person there was a Fan!
Dave Mathews Live in Central Park.Excellent show.Warren Haynes who is a guest aratist was rated 4 best guitarist in the world by Rolling Stone. His Soulful guitar tone is what I so enjoy through my tubes.I rented this and will find it again one day.Dave did another concert on an Island that was excellent.
Yes "Symphonic Live".In my opinion the Zenith of many bands career's happens when they play with a Full Symphony Orchestra.I saw Yes Live, one of the best concerts of my youth.Jon is still with them on this one
Dream Theater Live in Budacon & Score, unwatched,I'm saving them both for watching over my Christmas Holidays!..These guys to me are what Yes was to me learning to play drums.A Musicians Band in my opinion.
G-3 Live in Concert,FAST mesmerizing guitar work. just a taste of what these Musicians are capable of.Rent it
Joe Satriani, any of his concerts, daughter likes him.I like him.He taught so many great guitarists how to play properly.I want to find more of Eric Johnson's work too.
Joe Bonamasa Live at the RockPalasat Germany.I had never heard of him but will never forget him.
Stevie Ray Vaughn, any of them you can find.I have them all and all are keepers.
Los Lonely Boys, some young Bros having a very good time.Rent it.
Elton John Dream Ticket,4 distinct concerts, but Madison Square Gardens is my Favorite. He has so many excellent guests he does duets with. You can say what you want about old EJ but with Bernie the guy was one hell of a song writer and always gave you his moneys worth at his concerts.I used to warm up my chops playing along to Nigel Olsen's drumming.Nigel is such a true gentleman and one of Elton's right hand musicians.A keeper.
Elton John Live at Watford 2005.Think this may have only been available through his Fan club?
Rod Stewart.I grudgingly went with a girlfriend to see him in the seventy's.One of the best concerts I ever attended in Vancouver. On this dvd he does old standards and some newer stuff.I have only listened to the newer stuff. Some great Motown influences on these tracks.A gift to me from my Family and a keeper.
Standing in the Shadows of Motown. An excellent Historical dvd, finally giving so many talented Musicians their due. These guys have such big hearts.I Love to watch this dvd every once in awhile.I was so influenced in my own personal Life by these great Musicians and never even knew they were playing on so many of the songs I liked and grew up with. These great artists got a wallflower up and Dancing with their Soulful Music! Rent it.
Phil Collins Live & Loose in Paris rent it.
Sheryl Crow C'mon America 2003.I like Sheryl,a true Spirit.I really dig her drummers style on this tour.
Tina Turner 2dvd Collectors edition.Where the hell does this women get her infectious energy from. Two great concerts.Again great back up Musicians add so much to a concert.
Joe Cocker Live Across From Midnight Tour,Waldburne Berlin. The equivalent of Tina Turner in a guy.He gives 110% and I still like his songs after all his years since Mad Dogs & Englishmen. He is currently touring with the Steve Miller Band.Go see them both.Young and old will enjoy the two bands,I guarantee. These two bands consist of all True Musicians in my opinion. They Love what they do and its always contagious. Just Excellent back up musicians with both bands.
Pulse,Pink Floyd.Saw them Live, what can I say you haven't lived if you have not saw a Pink Floyd concert. The light show is stunning too.I have a few other Pink Floyd concerts off the net, will be watching a vintage Pink Floyd In St Tropez this weekend.

Dio-Holy Diver Tour, with the original band, not the release in 2004 or so. I have that but it's not with Viv Campbell and Jimmy Bain
Ian Gillan-Live at the Rainbow 1977
Genesis-When In Rome
Yes-35th Anniversary
Queensrych-Mindcrime at the Moore
Paul McCartney and Wings-Rockshow
Journey-Live in Houston 1981
Iron Maiden-Powerslave tour
Deep Purple-CalJam 1974

Some of my favorites. I also have Little River Band from Houston, Stevie Nicks at Red Rocks, Europe-Live in Sweden from some time in the 80's. I heard they did a new LP in 06 or something? I had Ozzy the Ultimate Sin tour on Beta a long time ago and I would really like to find that. If anyone has information let me know. Jake E was playing Guitar and Denny Carmasi drumming. I think Bob Daisley on Bass? Great show. Ozzy came down on the thrown in that show. I saw him live that tour here in Binghamton NY back mid 80's. I searched Ebay but no luck.

I have alot more but I think I covered the best. Some the sound quality isn't the best, others the video isn't the best. Of course that had more to do with the era of filming. The AC/DC Donnington I have is also fabulous but that was already listed...Sorry.

I forgot to mention regarding the S.R.V.dvd's I own(Stevie Ray Vaughn)were purchased very early on when I didn't have a clue just how much Music was actually available out there on dvd,so when I found some locally I naturally snatched up several burnt discs:thmbsp:.
Shortly after I stumbled upon a local store that sold commercially produced dvd concerts new & used and realized just how many were actually available and shortly after that I was hooked!:music:
I was just happy to find any footage of S.R.V.:yes:He was in my opinion a great guitarist whose Music I just happened to grow up with.I am sure many more recent Musicians will be enjoyed by you.
I got to see Stevie in Montreal not too long before he died in the tragic Helicopter crash along with Eric Clapton's sound man.
His brother Jimmy Vaughn was going to get on the chopper but Stevie had a gig,I think it was the next night in New York so he got on instead of his brother.Fate Intervened. Imagine how Jimmy felt when he got the news.:tears:This is discussed on one of the burnt SRV dvd's I own in the bonus interviews with with his drummer & bassist.
I am not even sure if S.R.V was even available on dvd, except maybe Austin City Limits, possibly Montreux. He was booed at Montreux, think it was his first time he was there so he said he tried to play harder/better to please the Audience!
I think some of his earlier stuff were reissues of VHS & the odd televised shows of that era, then transferred on to dvd,so usually picture quality suffers somewhat, in this case its to be expected, especially if its not going to be marketed commercially, which is highly unlikely once someone passes away.Sometimes a Movie is made and some unreleased music is released on a cd special issue, then thats usually it.
Unfortunately when dealing with passed Musicians,at least on dvd we have to take what we can get in my opinion,in my case, its just part of the "Fun" finding some of my favorite Musicians early career footage, concerts, even watching them on a 'Bootlegged' video.Hey,there is even the slim chance I might have been there that night!:scratch2:
S.RV.,was obviously on drugs(I think on the El Ma combo session in Toronto Canada,I haven't watched those dvd's in over a year)but he managed to get himself cleaned up and played some great Music when he was straight again, like the Austin City Limits shows. He looked, healthy, happy & in my opinion was really enjoying playing to his hometown fans again.:thmbsp:Too me,these earlier dvd clips & shows are like little time capsules and many times show the Raw Talent emerging from many Artists before they become shaped & polished commercially/financially by the Music Industry Engine.Check out Joe Bonamassa at RockPalasat and you will see what I mean:thmbsp:.
I really enjoyed watching the Bootlegged footage on the Pink Floyd Pulse dvd,and thought that was really cool they put that on as Bonus Footage. But to each his own.Its really all about the Music to me,not the picture quality, but being a Visual person I too love a great picture with great sound:yes:! I bet it looks good on a big projected image, just out of my budget.
For me its gone from a few dvd's and has become my own little Music History Collection of all kinds of music I have enjoyed over many years and because of the dvd's will be able to continue to do so whenever I want to.
I miss going to concerts, mainly, but mainly because of their high cost, plus one too many ignorant people who ruin a good concert I but dvd's,unless its at a small local venue.Harry Manx comes to mind.
Hey,dvd's are great,I can stop it anytime,go get a drink/washroom and I don't miss any songs either, who could ask for more! ...Oh yeah forgot Brian Adams at Slane Castle in Ireland, the Concert for Bangladesh was also a Big event for My Generation and George was always my favorite Beatle.
And who could leave out Neil Young's,Heart of Gold. What a personal heartfelt concert, another of my Favorite's.Get this,he did the concerts Fri & Sat at the awesome Rynum Auditorium in Nashville, then went in for a brain anurism surgery the following week! It could have very well been his last concert! Personal concerts like this are just one of the many reasons why I enjoy watching/collecting them....................Triode Altec Concert Kenny
