I have a Squeezebox2 that is only Ethernet. I want to use it at a point in my house that does not have a Ethernet jack close-by for hookup. What do I need for this to work wirelessly?

Do you already have a wireless network at your house?

Yes, and its secure and functions correctly with my laptop and Roku Soundbridge.

I want to use the wired device in a location when wired is not possible.

You might consider using an Ethernet-over-house-wiring solution. Netgear's XE104 box (http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/XE104.aspx) just plugs into any wall socket.

Well, the Squeezebox 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Squeezebox2-Wireless-Slim-Devices-Supply/dp/B0008IVGEI) supports wireless streaming: Are you seeking advice as to how to configure your SB2 to connect to your wireless router?

Just trying to pinpoint the question.

As my original post says 'Ethernet only' Squeezebox, no antenna for wireless capability.

There are some adapters that you can use to give that thing wireless capability.

Could you just use another cheap router or something? I am computer defunct :(

The SB2 (I have a wireless version) has a piggy-back board in it to enable wireless connections. The hardwired versions don't have it. I suspect there is a wireless extender that might well work but I haven't had to research it.

Geespot, did you look around? I'm sure you're not the first one with this problem. I'd also ask over at the Slim Devices/Logitech forums for this reason.

Cheers,

David

As my original post says 'Ethernet only' Squeezebox, no antenna for wireless capability. Silly me. What confused me the most is that Squeezebox 2 is supposed to have WiFI built in: But there may have been two varieties of that model, I guess.

I guess you could put in a wireless extender box of sorts. Something like this (http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineWirelessAccessPoints/WGXB102.aspx) or this (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=NxY&q=linksys+wireless+extender&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=2744813708005066063&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&resnum=1&ct=result#ps-sellers), as per Walkandtalk's suggestion.

I looked at the forums but everybody has a wireless version and nobody addresses the Ethernet only version.

I have found the wireless game adapters for using a Xbox, etc wireless and wondered if these would work.

'Ethernet only' suggests connection by cable only - no wireless.

Surely the best solution is a Wireless version Squeezebox?

Surely the best solution is a Wireless version Squeezebox? Certainly the simplest and most elegant solution!

Got it for next to nothing so any help is appreciated but some seem to miss the point of the original post.

OK, so I got curious myself about Ethernet extenders. Googling it, it turns out that there's quite a few products out there.

http://www.nextag.com/ethernet-extender/search-html

One of the aggregators, Nextag, shows quite a few products. The bad news is that, outside of the house wiring arrangements from Linksys, etc, the cost of the extenders pretty much swamps out the cost of another Squeexzebox.

Best if you can find someone who is willing to do a swap. I doubt that Slim Devices will have the add-on boards since they abandoned that V-2.0 SB platform. You might want to try their support folks, though.

BTW, I didn't spend much time searching and didn't try eBay for a donor box, either.

Cheers,

David

What you're looking for is an wireless ethernet bridge. It allows most devices that are equipped with an ethernet port to connect to a wireless network. Here's a link to a decent model for home use. You may want to get a model that's made by the same manufacturer as your wireless ap/router.
