View Full Version : World's largest record collection is for sale....
Darkspeed 11-20-2008, 06:39 PM Here is a link to a brief film about a man named Paul Mahwinney. He has the world's largest record collection which is basically an historic treasure to us all. I hope some investors step up and pick this up. I'm sure you'll agree. Check it out!!
This man's dedication to vinyl is amazing.

vinyldavid 11-20-2008, 07:12 PM Seems like he could use a TT upgrade or 3....for all that vinyl, a straight arm eats records...
That's a great story, tho.
onepixel 11-20-2008, 07:41 PM Very cool and poignant story. Thanks.
grillebilly 11-20-2008, 07:59 PM Thanks for sharing.
I think this is the same collection that has been on ebay a couple times. The first time a guy from Ireland won it but it fell through. Second time I don't know what happened.
This is the first time I have heard the story behind the collection.
wajobu 11-20-2008, 08:06 PM Syracuse University has an incredible collection of sound recordings...perhaps he might consider a donation.
Thanks for sharing, Darkspeed. There's a man who really loves music.

EchoWars 11-20-2008, 08:10 PM 2 million records (1 mil LP's and 1 mil singles), estimated worth (according to the video) of 50 million, averages $25 per LP or single. Seems a bit optimistic.
slow_jazz 11-20-2008, 08:14 PM Amazing ton of records....
wajobu 11-20-2008, 08:25 PM Just watched-it. I can't believe that the Smithsonian doesn't want it.
A collection like that is quite a responsibility.
avguytx 11-20-2008, 09:06 PM Nice attitude. :thumbsdn:

I thought he had 1.5 mil 45s. And a super rare never ever publicly released brand new Led Zep album ($6-10K). He was asking only 3 million, which is hell of killer deal.

Sorry, were you saying something? I'm having trouble getting past your avatar.
Mark W. 11-20-2008, 11:49 PM The Smithsonian rarely buys things like this they have things like this given to them. I have a buddy who is cataloging the camera collection in some cases they might have 20 examples of common 35mm cameras in a big box or the might have in another one of the rarest and most valuable cameras in the world (which they didn't even know they had until Eric told them what it was) He says the camera collection takes up as much room as a high school gym with the bleaches pulled back and about 12 feet high on tight spaced shelves and lockers.
I would assume the music collection is similar not to mention the Libarary of congress.

That's what I thought too. No way would it be that much, even if he has 50 copies of that Rolling Stones record he was showing.
I SHUDDERED when I saw the way he handled that record that he said is from 1881! No gloves, fingers all over the grooves? Not to mention, he's ill (sad to say), and was one-handing it. He could easily drop it and smash it to smithereens.
If that's how he's treated those records, I wouldn't give him $3 million :D
2DualsNotEnough 11-21-2008, 12:14 AM I had read somewhere that this is whats left of his old record store. These are the records that didnt sell.I wonder if he is overselling his collection a bit.

dr. eric 11-21-2008, 12:42 AM Why doesn't Audiokarma raise money to buy the collection? how many dollars would that per person???
epifanatic 11-21-2008, 12:49 AM 2 million records (1 mil LP's and 1 mil singles), estimated worth (according to the video) of 50 million, averages $25 per LP or single. Seems a bit optimistic. I agree.... if that were the case, my collection would be worth $100,000.
SpeakerLabFan 11-21-2008, 12:50 AM ...how many common records vs interesting records are there likely to be in that collection? I don't have anything against common records but I think in a purchase this big they should be discounted to pennies or free. I think it would suck to buy a million copies of records like The Eagles Greatest Hits (I think that title sold more copies than any other record), not to mention the Manilow, Steisand, Roger Whittaker stuff, at a cost of a million dollars.
I was struck by how Mr Mawhinney repeated at several points in the video that no-one appreciated records anymore. huh? It would be cool if he could see the interest and appreciation on websites like audiokarma.
